Dowry Allegation
Rajpura, May 8 Balwinder Singh, father of the deceased, Gagandeep Kaur, and a resident of Phase VII, Mohali, said his daughter was married to Amandeep Singh, a computer teacher at a government institute, just one and half months ago. The boy was residing in the Alipur area of Rajpura, along with his parents. Amandeep’s father Ajaib Singh is a block development officer in Chandigarh. Gagandeep’s family members said the marriage was solemnised as per the wishes of Amandeep’s family. While Gagandeep was an MPhil and was deployed as a lecturer in private institute near Rajpura for the past some time, her elder sister Roopinder Kaur is a doctor at a renowned hospital in Mohali. Balwinder alleged that Amandeep’s family members had been demanding a Swift Dzire from him for the past few days and after repeated demands a car was booked in the name of Gagandeep. He alleged that the victim’s in-laws then demanded more dowry and harassed his daughter over one pretext or the other. Amandeep’s family members informed Balwinder about illness of his daughter and told him to reach Rajpura this morning where he was told that his girl had consumed some poisonous substance. The elder sister of the deceased, however, spotted marks over her sister’s neck and accused her in-laws of killing her. Police officials were informed and a case under Sections 304-B and 34 of the IPC has been registered against Ajaib Singh, Amandeep Singh and his mother Devinder Kaur. While the SHO (city) was on leave, investigating officer Amrik Singh said no arrests had been made in this regard and investigation was on. |

Poor facilities at Lalru grain market
Dera Bassi, May 8 Not only the provision for drinking water and proper place to sit is missing, the commission agents are forced to work in makeshift offices. Reason — the Punjab Mandi Board, after purchasing 16 acres at a rate of Rs 8 lakh, is now demanding Rs 75 lakh per acre for construction of shops. The rate is unacceptable to the commission agents. For the past four years, the commission agents have been doing their business from temporary tents. Mohan Lal, Nand Lal, Ashok Kumar and Ghan Shyam, all commission agents of the grain market, lament that the state was not keen on providing them with permanent structures where they could interact with farmers. “We are bound to run their business from the temporary tents and during the season of summers it is very difficult to sit in the tents. Farmers have been also facing harassment along with us as they could not find proper place for sitting and other facilities as of drinking water,” added commission agents. They demanded the place for the construction of shops on reasonable rates. Gurpal Singh, a farmer of Toganpur village, said farmers were also harassed due to absence of proper sitting place. Contrary to the argument of commission agents, district mandi officer Gurcharn Singh said 11 commission agents were offered the land for construction of shops on reserve rates, but they had not accepted the offer. |

Rice shellers fear losses due to delay in lifting
Fatehgarh Sahib, May 8 Press secretary of the association Nakesh Jindal, while addressing media after a meeting of the rice shellers in Sirhind, alleged that the delay in lifting of rice was due to the wrong policies of the central government. “We are worried about the deteriorating quality of rice stored in shellers. Even there is no space for storage in government godowns,” he said. The government has also delayed the process of extending deadline for milling paddy and it has added to more chaos in the process of milling and delivery of rice, Jindal said. He stated that rice shellers in Punjab were supposed to deliver 91 lakh metric tonne of rice after milling the paddy before March 31. Though the government extended the deadline, there is no movement of rice from godowns due space shortage and 36 lakh metric tonne rice is still not delivered. He demanded that lifting of rice from shellers should immediately be expedited to bring respite to shellers. |
