Main transformer catches fire
Panic spreads as thick fumes engulfed the area for more than two hours
Ludhiana, April 17
A transformer that caught fire in Ludhiana. Major fire broke out in one of the main transformers of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) near the Chand Cinema here this afternoon.

15,000 people affected
Ludhiana, April 17
Even as the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) were heaving a sign of relief after the two-day strike passed off peacefully with no snag in the power supply, a major fire at one of the four 20MV transformers at the 66 KV sub-station at Old G.T.

Blood components unit opened
Cell-separator machine installed at a charitable hospital in Ludhiana. Ludhiana, April 17
The blood bank at Guru Teg Bahadur Charitable Hospital got a new blood component separator on Friday. The machine that costs Rs 25 lakh has been contributed by Rotary Club, Ludhiana. Chairman Improvement Trust Ashok Juneja inaugurated the blood components preparation unit at the hospital.

Drug menace: Students take to roads
Ludhiana, April 17
Hundreds of students from eight Akal Academies today held an anti-drugs awareness rally.The aim was to spread awareness among residents regarding the ill-effects of drug addiction. The students carried placards depicting messages to shun drugs.

Boy drowns in village pond

A child reportedly got drowned in a pond at Jalaldiwal village near here yesterday evening. The pond was renovated and its depth increased by 9-foot under the NREGA scheme by the panchayat.

18-yr-old dies of burns
Khamano, April 17
A resident of Bhari village died when a stove she was cooking food on caught fire. Rupinder Kaur (18) sustained severe burn injuries. She was rushed to the Khanna civil hospital. From there, she was referred to Gian Sagar Hospital at Banur. But, she succumbed to her burn injuries on her way to the hospital.

Robbers steal truck loaded with 250 wheat bags
Warehouse watchman killed; 2 hurt
Phillaur, April 17
A few unidentified armed robbers entered into a Punjab State Warehousing Corporation’s godown at Bachhewal village in this subdivision and decamped with a truck (PB-08Q-9411) loaded with 250 bags of wheat. In the processes they attacked and killed watchman Kishan Chand (55) and wounded two other watchmen Gurmit Singh and Vidhya Ram.

Four booked for dowry
Raikot, April 17
The police has booked four persons for harassing a girl to get more dowry.Mandeep Kaur of Rattowal village in her complaint to the Ludhiana SSP Harinder Singh Chahal, on March 15, stated that her husband Jagdeep Singh, his father Darshan Singh, mother Paramjit Kaur and his sister Amandeep Kaur of Talwandi Mallian village near Jagraon used to harass her for more dowry. Jagdeep, who was earlier working in the army had quit his job and returned. After the inquiry conducted by the DSP Raikot Prithipal Singh, the police booked all four accused under Sections 406 and 498-A of the IPC.
