Seven killed, two hurt in accidents
Ambala, April 14 The accident took place around 3.30 pm when a car (HP-33B-2772) in which they were travelling collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction, leaving five dead on the spot. According to the police, all victims were residents of Hamirpur (HP) and returning from Haridwar. Though the truck driver fled after the mishap, the truck was impounded by the police. The bodies of the deceased were sent to MM Hospital Mulana for the autopsy. According to sources, the victims have been identified as Lajo Devi, Rattan Lal Sharma, Suraj, Neeraj and Roop Lal, driver of the car. However, the police had not yet confirmed the names. A case of rash and negligent driving was registered against truck driver at the Mulana police station. Rajpura: Two persons lost their lives in separate accidents in Rajpura today and another sustained serious injuries. The deceased had been identified as Taranjit Singh (28), a resident of Chatar Nagar in Ghanaur, near Rajpura, and Sunil Kumar, a resident of Karnal. Taranjit was on his way back from Ambala on a tractor, along with his relative Jagtar Singh, a resident of Doraha, near Khanna. An unidentified vehicle hit their tractor-trailer near Rajpura and Taranjit died on the spot. Jagtar was undergoing treatment at Rajpura Civil Hospital. Jagtar said their tractor-trailer overturned and fell into nearby fields after the accident. Karnal resident Sunil was also hit by an unidentified vehicle near Rajpura and he died on the spot. Police officials said cases had been registered in both the cases and further investigation was on. |

54,911-tonne wheat arrives in district
Ambala, April 14 He added that out of the total, 54,857 tonne wheat had been procured by government procurement agencies, while 54 tonne wheat had been procured by traders so far. He said 13,301 tonne wheat had been procured by the food and supplies department, 25,661 tonne by Hafed, 13,513 tonne by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and 2,382 tonne by Confed. He added that out of the total wheat, 32,301 tonne had arrived at Ambala City, 690 tonne at Ambala Cantonment, 2,936 tonne at Barara, 55 tonne at Bhareri Kalan, 1,168 tonne at Kesri, 2,727 tonne at Mulana, 7,000 tonne at Nanoela, 1,240 tonne at Naraingarh, 5,220 tonne at Saha, 114 tonne at Sardaheri, 870 tonne at Shehzadpur, 550 tonne at Talheri Gujran and 310 tonne at
Ugalla. |
2 held for assault
Chandigarh, April 14 The victim, identified as 22-year-old Ajnish Kumar, told TNS that he was employed as a security guard with the Safe Guard Security, Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5, Panchkula. He was posted at Mount Carmel School in Sector 47-B. On April 8, Tinku Mehra, general manager of the company and security in charge Narinder Kumar Tewari bundled him into a vehicle and took him to their office in Panchkula and thrashed him black and blue. The police said a case of abduction, assault and criminal intimidation had been registered against the accused and the police arrested Narinder Kumar and Tinku Mehra in this connection. —

Body of migrant recovered
Mohali, April 14 According to reports, a passer-by saw the body lying in the park, which was close to a petrol pump in the area. The police was later informed in this regard, which then sent the body to the Civil Hospital. SP (D) Varinder Pal Singh and other senior officers reached the spot after getting the information. They said possibility of a murder could not be ruled out though outright it was not clear what led to the death of the man. It appeared that some persons must have gathered in the park after which some dispute might have taken place because of which the person must have been killed. SHO of the Matour police station Atul Soni said the deceased appeared to be a migrant from Rajasthan who was about 35 years old. There were injury marks on the head and at the back of the neck and blood on many parts of the body. He was carrying a bag which, too, had blood stains. He said the body was sent to the Civil Hospital for a postmortem examination. The body would be kept for two days as the police would wait for someone to come and claim it and also provide some information, which could help in solving the case.
Three booked for cruelty
Three persons have been booked by the police on charges of criminal breach of trust and cruelty. Manpreet Kaur, a resident of Phase IX, told the police that she had got married to Mandeep Singh, who lived in Puncham Society in Sector 68, in November, 2008. She was allegedly harassed by her husband and in-laws to bring a Swift car and more dowry. The police inquired into the complaint and registered a case under Sections 498-A, 406, and 34 of the IPC against Mandeep Singh, brother-in-law Navdeep Singh and mother-in-law Parkash Kaur.
Airtel booked for negligence
The police has booked telecommunication company Airtel on charges of negligence, which had not employed any guard to man a tower put up by the company in Khanpur village. According to the police, Anu Rani, a resident of Khanpur, had complained that her husband, Balak Ram, who was fond of keeping pigeons, had climbed the tower to catch a pigeon, but fell from there and later died. She had alleged that her husband had died due to the negligence of the company, which had not deployed any watchman to take care of the tower. The police has registered a case under Section 304-A of the IPC against Airtel.
Car theft
A car was stolen from Phase VII. Gurpinder Singh complained to the police that he had parked his Tata Safari outside his home, but the vehicle was missing the next morning. A case under Section 379 of the IPC was registered in this regard. |

Bank employee booked for fraud
Panchkula, April 14 Anubhav, in his complaint to the police, said as Sandeep was residing with him in his house he asked him and his family members to open a Demat account with IndusInd Bank, Sector 11, with which he was employed as a manager. Anubhav said they started transacting their account through Sandeep. He added that in 2003 Sandeep took along certain voucher slips of various shares owned by him and his family members without informing them. The complainant alleged that Sandeep sold the shares when he was posted in the bank as sales or purchase in collusion with two trading firms and misappropriated the payments of the same. He alleged that the accused used to issue them fabricated statements showing the shares in their names. He said the matter came to light when he approached the bank’s head office at Mumbai in 2006 for issuing a statement regarding their account. He said on receiving the statement he found that Sandeep had duped him and his family members by misappropriating Rs 25 to Rs 27 lakh. He said when they approached the accused in this regard the latter told them that he required some money and would return the whole amount immediately. The Sector 5 police station has registered a case against Sandeep Singla and two firms under Sections 420, 406, 463, 464, 467, 468, 471, 120B of the IPC. He further said that Sandeep shifted to another house and later started threatening them in one way or the other. He said the accused was now employed with the HDFC Bank, Dera Bassi, as branch manager. |

2 snatch woman’s purse
Ambala, April 14 The woman, identified as Pooja, a teacher in a private school, was returning home on a scooter. When she was crossing near the old Sessions Court, the youths snatched her purse and fled. The purse contained Rs 2,000 cash and a mobile phone. —

In his complaint, Atul Kumar of Dadu Majra Colony alleged that a car (CH 04 H 6334) hit his motorcycle near the traffic lights on the road dividing Sectors 38 and 40 yesterday. Kumar and his daughter Supria Nandan sustained injuries and were rushed to the Government Multi Speciality Hospital. A case has been registered.
Missing
Vijay Kumar of Sector 47-D filed a complaint with the police alleging that his 70-year-old father Sharif Masih had gone missing since April 11. He had gone to a church in Sector 24, but did not return till date. He was wearing a white shirt, blue trousers and black shoes. He was not mentally sound, his son claimed. The police has registered a daily diary report.

The police has arrested a resident of Ram Darbar for allegedly using domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes. Inspector of the UT food and supply department Kansi Ram reported to the police that Som Nath of Phase II, Ram Darbar, was caught using domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes at Plot No 81, Phase I, on Tuesday. A case under Section 7 of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, has been registered against the accused. |

Chandigarh, April 14 Although the Noida lad could muster a one over par 73 card today, his three under 69 on the opening day saw him tally two under 142. This is two strokes better than the threesome of Karan Vasudeva (Delhi), Ashbeer Singh Saini (Kapurthala) and Aditya Bhandarkar (Pune), who are tied second at par 144. The Chadha cousins from Chandigarh, Tarundeep and Abhijit, are another two strokes behind at 146. Karan Vasudeva and Chandigarh’s HS Kang shared the best card of the day, a two under 70. Kang rallied from a poor 77 score of the opening day to be three over 147 after the second round. Nestled in the Shivalik hills with the Kasauli hills forming a perfect backdrop, the course is in good condition and is playing exceedingly well with Col Gurdial Singh handling its maintenance. General SR Ghosh, Army Commander, said preparation for the course commenced three months in advance to bring it to the IGU required standards. Rahul’s front 9 was bogie fee and was level par but bogie on 10th and a quadruple on the par-3 12th hole took the toll of him. But thereafter Rahul birdied the 13th, eagled the 14th, birdied the 15th and 16th. This looked like a dream run but a double on the par-3 17th followed by a birdie on the final hole saw him finish at one over par 73. 8-day EGTF golf camp
Chandigarh, April 14 Stating this, academy joint director Ajay Gujral said members and non-members were eligible to join the camp, which would be held from 4 pm to 5 pm. The trainees will be taught the importance of rules and etiquette as also the basics of the golf swing, putting, chipping, bunker shots and long and short irons. The trainees will also receive four free golf magazines and a comprehensive golf manual. And on the completion of the course, which will be conducted strictly on the guidelines of the European Golf Teachers Federation, each one of them will be given an EGTF certificate.
