Chetna March reaches city:
Under the leadership of state president of the Internationalist Democratic Party (IDP) Karnail Singh Jakhepal, the Lok Chetna March, dedicated to the martyrdom day of Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, began from Hussaniwala and reached the city today. The march will culminate at Chandigarh on March 27 after passing through Talwandi Sabo, Mansa, Lehra Gagga, Sunam, Patran, Patiala and Rajpura. The participants in the caravan of motorcycles also distributed pamphlets in the bazaars here asking people to join the movement started by the IDP.

One held with fake currency
: Acting on a tip-off, the Hajipur police erected a special check post at Sibo Chack village and intercepted a cyclist Sohan Singh of Mansoorpur, under Adampur police station, last evening and seized fake currency worth Rs 1 lakh from him. During his search, the police seized 200 fake currency notes of Rs 500 denomination each from him.

Clash in court complex: A clash took place between a law student, Shiv Raj Singh, son of advocate Amrik Singh Dhami, and advocate Inderpal Singh, member, Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana, on the district court premises here today. On the complaint of Inderpal Singh, the police has arrested Shiv Raj Singh under sections 323, 341, 427 and 506 of the IPC.

Farmers’ arrest: Bhup Chand Chano and Gurmesh Singh, president and general secretary, respectively, of the All-India Khet Mazdoor Union, Punjab, condemned the arrests of farmers and farm labourers in an “undemocratic” way. In a press note here today, both leaders urged the Punjab Governor to register a case of murder and arrest against those police officials responsible for the killing of tehsil president of the Tarn Taran unit of the union Kashmir Singh. They said it had been decided that 22 unions of farmers and rural farm labourers would stage a peaceful protest march and dharna in front of the office of the DIG, Border Range, from March 25 to 27.

Ram Navami procession: A procession organised on the occasion of Ram Navami was largely attended by devotees and city residents. Starting from the Devi Talab Mandir, the decorated procession passed through various parts of the city before culminating at the temple itself. People welcomed the procession with great enthusiasm and showered flower petals on jhankis and tableaus.

Towers’ installation: The state government recently enforced tangible guidelines under the policy formulated in August, 2006, providing regulations for installation of communication towers by various companies in the specified areas of the state. Those mobile network companies not abiding by the requisite formalities prescribed under these guidelines will be dealt with stringently.

Funds allocated: A sum of Rs 23.29 crore has been allocated to be spent under the ‘Backward Regions Grant Fund (BRGF)’ for the district during the fiscal year commencing from April 1. There is an increase of Rs 7.76 crore in the allocation for next year as compared to the current financial year ending on March 31. Presiding over a meeting of the BRGF here on Tuesday, state Vidhan Sabha Speaker Tulsi Ram said the BRGF was designed to redress regional imbalances in development by bridging critical gaps in local infrastructure and other development requirements.
