Quality life on Punjab’s agenda
Meeting on New Industrial Policy soon:
Minister Promising to address the delay in implementing the state's industrial policy, Punjab Industry Minister Manoranjan Kalia said he had requested Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to look into the issue, who may hold a meeting in this regard
soon. "I have asked Badal to resolve the issue by notifying provisions under the New Industrial Policy and asked the Chief Secretary to hold a meeting in this regard," he said.
Chandigarh, March 22 It is in this regard that the CII joined hands with officials and the leadership to have a blueprint on the quality of life, social infrastructure, civic sense, green and clean environment along with the world-class health care and educational facilities, during a seminar held here today. Underlining the need for a “specific package” from the Centre based on the natural strength of a particular state, Manoranjan Kalia, Punjab Local Bodies Minister, said, “Every state should be tapped for its inherent strengths. If Himachal Pradesh has natural potential for tourism and hydroelectricity, the state should excel in the development of these sectors so that the ecological balance is not disturbed. Similarly, Punjab, having the natural potential for agro industry and being a land-locked state, should synergise all efforts to excel in agro industry, IT and knowledge-based industry and it has been the focus of the state’s industrial policy with a coordinated development in other areas”. “On our part, we will continue to focus on strengthening the road network, municipalities, urban and rural infrastructure, improvised healthcare and education services”, he added. Kalia also advocated for a public private partnership in the areas of health and education with a “humanistic concern”. Harpal Singh, chairman, CII Northern Region, articulated the need to develop a vision statement for the state with initiatives through a brainstorming discussion on Punjab. He said in order to take the state to the next level of development and reforms, the CII proposed to work in close coordination with the government. Amit Kapoor, honorary chairman, Institute for Competitiveness, and professor of Strategy & Industrial Economics, Management Development Institute, Gurgaon said, “Considering 2.8 per cent of the population of the country residing in 1.5 per cent of the area, we need to focus on the ways and means to address traffic issues and decongest the state. He also talked about the need to promote “Brand Punjab” to attract investment and harnessing the state potential in agro and processing sector. |

Noose tightened around bogus firms
Ludhiana, March 22 The input tax credit (ITC) is the amount of tax paid by a dealer on purchases for which the dealer is entitled to claim a credit. With the notification issued on March 17, the traders, who used to show endless number of sale and purchase, will not be able to exceed four stages. The notification has been issued to keep a check on the mushrooming bogus firms in the state. The department had detected a large number of cases in Punjab where people were making sales and purchases on the name of bogus firms, just to claim ITC from the department. In November last year, the department came face to face with the fact that traders in the state, in order to claim ITC and refund, had presented bogus turnovers of around Rs 20,000 crore. Nearly 60 per cent of the firms showing bogus turnover were from Ludhiana. Parampal Singh, DETC, said it would help in keeping a tab over the escalating number of bogus firms in the state. Meanwhile, lawyers are worried as their workload will increase after this notification comes into practice. Jatinder Khurana, president of the Taxation Young Lawyers Association, said new columns had been added in the VAT return forms. |
