Capital issue rankles Hooda
Chandigarh, March 5 Talking to the media at the press lounge of the assembly after the conclusion of the first day of the Budget session, Hooda said such issues were not a subject matter of the Governor’s Address. Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal had raised this issue during the Chief Ministers’ conference in Delhi recently. At that time he (Hooda) had said that Chandigarh was the joint capital of Haryana and Punjab. Still if Punjab wanted a separate capital, it was welcome to construct one outside Chandigarh. Hooda took exception to certain advertisements put by the Punjab government, describing the Chandigarh International Airport as “Mohali Airport”. He said in the proposed airport, both Haryana and Punjab were equal partners and it had been agreed by the two states that it would be called “Chandigarh airport”. He said Haryana had no objection if the airport was named after Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh. Hooda said he would expand his Cabinet but did not say when. He said there was no proposal to have a Deputy Chief Minister. Earlier in the assembly, Speaker HS Chatha converted an adjournment motion moved by the Indian National Lok Dal on the steep price rise into a call attention motion. Speaker during zero hour, INLD leader Om Prakash Chautala said his party had moved an adjournment motion so that the House could unanimously pass a resolution urging the Centre to take effective steps to check inflation. Chatha informed him that he had converted the same into a call attention motion and had asked the government to reply on March 9. Chautala was visibly not satisfied with the reply but he chose not to press the issue further. |

Power official blamed for closure of thermal units
Panipat, March 5 President of association RS Dahiya said the state was losing 528 MW of power daily as the thermal generation units had been lying shut. He stated that this had been caused due to lack of decision-making by the director (technical). The thermal engineers claimed that it would take three months to put the units back into action. Dahiya said 110 MW unit no 3 of the Panipat thermal plant was closed on December 29, 2009, due to inflow of lubricating oil in turbine shaft resulting in overheating of turbine. This unit is lying closed for the past two months and the official reason given is turbine alignment. Sumer Singh Yadav, general secretary of the association, said the 300 MW unit number 2 of the Yamunanagar thermal plant was closed on February 22 due to excessive collection of ash in electro state precipitation (ESP) hoppers. He said the damage could have been minimised if the director technical would have allowed immediate shutdown of the unit. This led to damage to ESP hoppers of the unit. Laying the onus of shortage of power due to closure of the two units on director technical, the engineers’ body stated that the power position had worsened due to wrong decision taken by him, who at present was seeking third extension for himself. The association lamented that the management had recommended his name for extension despite his poor performance. It demanded that a new director be posted in his place after the expiry of his second extension. It may be mentioned here that another 110 MW unit no. 1 of the Panipat thermal plant is also not working for the past four days. |
