Bajajs may urge SC to move case out of city

CHB mulling price revision

The Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) is mulling an upward revision of prices of dwelling units offered under the special housing scheme for UT employees in Sectors 52 and 56 here.

Girls accuse cops of ignoring their complaint

Henna Singh and Pahul Ahluwalia, the two girls involved in the brawl that tool place last January between Ranjit Bajaj and Gurmohan Singh Bedi, today accused the Panchkula police of being biased against them, alleging the cops had been sitting over their complaint of ‘eve-teasing’ for more than a month.

Cong delegation meets Patil

A delegation of the local unit of the Congress, along with Surinder Singh, former Mayor of the municipal corporation of Chandigarh, today met UT Administrator Shivraj Patil. It submitted a memorandum to the administrator, in which they alleged that the land acquisition formula of compensation, based on the annual average of the registered sale deeds, was defective, as the prevalent market rate was much higher.

65 jhuggis pulled down

The enforcement staff of the Chandigarh municipal corporation today demolished 65 jhuggis at the Industrial Area. The drive was conducted under the supervision of Additional Commissioner of the MC PK Sharma.

SI among 5 awarded
Chandigarh, March 4
The IGP rewarded five personnel of the police control room (PCR) wing for solving a case. First class certificates were given to SI Mohinder Singh, woman constable Monika, and Home Guard volunteers Anil Kumar, Balbir Singh and Phool Kumar. In another case, during the night intervening February 25 and 26, the PCR staff nabbed two rickshaw-pullers involved in illegal activity.

Boston Fiasco
Some more action on PU campus
Chandigarh, March 4
The Boston fiasco is now being used by student political parties to settle personal scores. Today, PUSU, HSA and ABVP members sat on an indefinite fast, demanding immediate action against “outsiders” who went to Boston posing as PU students. On the other hand, SOPU campus leader Brinder Dhillon denied the allegations of misrepresentation at a press meet. Claiming that he was a “detained student” of the PU, Brinder denied the charges levelled against him by PUSU and said he did not forge any document to go abroad. Meanwhile, PUSU members forced their way into the VC’s office today and broke plants.

The CBI today said offences covered under Section 11 of the PC Act (public person taking valuable things without consideration) had been made out against the accused in the cash-at-judge’s door case, though they could not proceed for want of sanction from the competent authority.

Order against mall’s construction upheld

In a verdict with far-reaching implications on the construction activity within Chandigarh’s municipal limits, including rural areas brought in recently, the Punjab and Haryana High Court upheld the MC’s order declining permission for the construction of a shopping complex at Shahpur village adjacent to Sector 38 West.

The court of Additional Sessions Judge Mandeep Pannu today sentenced a resident Kahi Majra village and his mother to seven-year rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000 for dowry death.

Company told to pay Rs 12,000
Chandigarh, March 4
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum-I has directed Genins India Ltd, Noida, to pay Rs 12,049 to Sumedh Pathak, a resident of Modern Housing Complex, Mani Majra. The complainant, who is a retired employee of National Fertilisers Limited, had opted for the medi-claim scheme evolved by them under which 80 per cent of the premium was to be borne by the company and 20 per cent by the employee. In October, 2008, he underwent a surgery for fistula at Government Multi Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, Chandigarh, and remained there from October 18 to 23 in 2008. The requisite bills verified by the concerned surgeon were sent to the company by speed post on December 31, 2008. However, it did not settle the claim till February 5, 2009, after which he sent a reminder via an email. In response, he was asked to submit some documents, which were sent by him through an email on February 25, 2009.

City’s Ranjit Singh leads in PGTI event

It was Ranjit Singh all the way. This 35-year-old Chandigarh golfer was virtually on home turf as he fired a seven under 65 card to take a three-stroke lead on the opening day of the Aircel-PGTI Players’ Championship on the par-72 greens of the Panchkula Golf Club here today.
