Gurdaspur, February 19
A potentially volatile situation arose when an activist of the Khanna Chamara Goli Kand Sangharsh Committee died in the wee hours here today, sending district administration officials in a tizzy. Jora Singh (65) of Chakker village falling in Ludhiana district died while he was sleeping in a truck parked near the Deputy Commissioner’s office, which was also the venue of the dharna.

His colleagues tried to wake him up in the morning but they found him dead. Wilting under sustained pressure built up by the farmers over the last four days, Deputy Commissioner Dr Karamjit Singh Sra brokered an agreement between the government and sangharsh committee leaders in which a majority of the farmers’ demands were accepted. The final announcement of lifting the dharna came after SDM J.P. Singh announced the concessions from the stage.

Under the agreement the government will pay Rs 5 lakh to the family of Jora Singh and Rs 10 lakh each would be paid to the kin of Balwinder Singh and Kashmir Singh, both of whom died in the firing at Khanna Chamara village on November 3 last year when SGPC Task Force members had resorted to firing on villagers. A relief of Rs 50,000 will be given to each of the nine people injured in the firing.

Under the deal, jobs will also be provided to the kin of Balwinder Singh and Kashmir Singh.

However, the main demand of booking Avtar Singh Makkar and Dilmegh Singh, SGPC President and Secretary, respectively, and Amrik Singh Shahpur, SGPC member, was not discussed by the leaders with the administration.

Committee spokesman Gurmeet Singh said, “The demand of arresting the SGPC President and the Secretary and Amrik Singh Shahpur will be taken up with the authorities concerned at a later stage.” Jora Singh was among the first to arrive at the venue when the committee members started their protest on February 15 and he made his presence felt near the bus stand yesterday when the farmers burnt an effigy of the Punjab government.

Distressed over the loss of one of their colleagues, droves of farmers, a majority of them with drooping shoulders and sagging spirit, started moving towards the Civil Hospital where Jora Singh’s post-mortem examination was performed. Fearing a backlash from the farmers, officials sent a riot control vehicle to the Civil Hospital. Hundreds of farmers patiently waited in the hospital complex giving some tense moments to the district officials.

The police, led by SP Charanjit Singh and DSP Jasdeep Singh, was out in full strength at the hospital. Later, the farmers brought the body to the dharna venue making the atmosphere an emotionally surcharged.

Jalandhar, February 19
Christian organisations warned to give a call for a Punjab bandh, and held protests in the city demanding immediate arrest of those responsible for ill-representation of a picture of Jesus Christ on a hording of Ram Naumi poster. The protesters blocked roads and even vandalised a few shops, forcing business establishments, including some banks, to close shutters. The police resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse the crowd.

Later, leaders of various Christian organisations held a meeting with Superintendent of Police (City-I) S.K. Kalia and gave a two-day ultimatum to the administration to arrest those guilty in the case. The protests were called off only after the administration ensured to make the arrests. The women and youth wing of the Punjab Christians Movement warned to give a Punjab bandh call, if the government failed to arrest the culprits within the stipulated time.

People associated with various Christian organisations today gathered in the Mission compound in Adarsh Nagar to demand arrest of the guilty persons. The protesters held a picket at Guru Nanak Mission Chowk, leading to a traffic jam. Punjab Christians Movement president Hameed Masih, general secretary Tersem Kahnuwal, district president of youth wing Sanowar Bhatti and general secretary Jonny Masih were present during the protests.

Kalia said cases had been registered against the culprits, adding that some people were instigating communal feeling to serve their vested interests. He further said that the police had started to carry out raids in order to ensure early arrest of the culprits.

Meanwhile, the District Congress Committee has condemned the ill-representation of Jesus Christ’s picture. Congress leader Ram Lal Jassi said the party condemned the turn of events at its meeting held at Congress Bhavan, which was presided over by party district president Arun Walia.
