Annual sports meet
: Sulochana was declared best athlete during the annual sports meet that concluded on Saturday evening at Bhag Singh Hayer College for Women located in village Kala Tibba near here. She was awarded trophy by the college chairperson-cum-founder Bibi Harbaksh Kaur. Santosh Rani was honoured as the best NCC cadet while Rupa Saini House was adjudged the best for co-curricular activities. Jakhar said that students of this college had the ability of emerging as shining stars both in academic as well as extra-curricular activities. Principal Dr Parminder Sharma welcomed the guests.

Teaching skill competition: Most of the students who came from different colleges to participate in the PU zonal competitions in skill in teaching and on-the- spot teaching-aid preparations at the DAV College of Education here, on Saturday, mesmerised the visiting observers. Dr Mandeep Kaur and Rajpal Kaur were the conveners. PU senator and state president of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union, Prof Iqbal Singh Sandhu, principal Dr Venita Singh also appreciated the participants. The toppers in different subjects in the skill-in-teaching competition included Nisha of local MD College of Education, Jagdeep of HKL College of Education Guru Har Sahai, Paramjit Kaur and Sanjeev of DAV College of Education Abohar and Payal of Dashmesh Girls College of Education Badal.

Students felicitated
: DAV College for Women organised its Annual Awards Day function on Saturday which was presided over by Janmeja Singh Sekhon, irrigation minister. Dr Pushpinder Walia, principal read out the annual report highlighting the academic and co-curricular achievements of the college. The winners of various events competitions were felicitated. Sonam (B.A III) was declared the best all rounder of the year for her remarkable achievements in academic and cultural field. In all, 219 students received honours during the function.In his address, Sekhon lauded the efforts of the college for providing quality education to the girls in this border region.

Phagwara
Beggar found dead
: An unidentified beggar was found dead at nearby Nihalgarh village on Saturday.The beggar consumed greater quantity of intoxicants on the night of Shivratri on Friday, which led to his death, the police said. The body has been kept in the mortuary of the Civil Hospital.

BSNL broadband out of order: Hundreds of telecom subscribers were inconvenienced as the broadband services of BSNL lay paralysed in most parts of Phagwara for the last three days. The communication work was badly disrupted due to dysfunctional broadband services. Even the local branch of the Punjab Technical University was seen badly affected. Unfortunately, no official was there to see and solve the problems of the subscribers due to holidays of Shivratri, second Saturday and Sunday. Officials said the problem could be rectified only on Monday.

Villager arrested: The Phagwara Police has arrested a villager Sandeep Kumar of Kirpaulpur Colony village and recovered a .12-bore revolver and three live cartridges from his possession in the nearby Sangatpur village today. Meanwhile, the police arrested a Dalit leader Satish Suman under section 107/151 of the CRPC here today. Later, Suman was released on bail this evening, said Phagwara SDM Amarjeet Paul.

Poppy seized
: The police seized three bags of poppy straw from Shamim Ahmed Bhat and Hafizullah Raina, residents of Kralwari Chadoora in Budgam district on Saturday. Both persons have been arrested and a case has been registered. 

Two houses damaged: Two houses and a cowshed were damaged due to heavy snowfall in the Chirpora area of Handwara. The house of Bashir Ahmad Bhat and Khursheed Ahmed and a single-storey house of Abdul Aziz Beigh of Chirpora Handwara were damaged, the police said on Saturday. 

Man found dead: Vijay Kumar Chohan, an employee with the Heena Tours and Travels West Mumbai, reportedly staying at Shahanshah Hotel, Nehru Park, died in mysterious circumstances. The deceased was a resident of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and was died at CD hospital, Dalgate, here.
