Apparel exhibition by students
Patiala, February 6 Rani Modi, wife of Seth Sudarshan Kumar Modi, chairman of Modi Education Society, Patiala, inaugurated the exhibition. College principal Dr SK Bhardwaj said MSc in fashion designing and technology aimed at making girls self-dependent. He also hoped that the exhibition would spread awareness about the utility of the course. The coordinator of the department Prof Baljinder Kaur, expressed that all dresses were original creations and a result of consistent efforts of the students under the guidance of their teachers. The students showcased their talent through articles made in tie and dye, block printing, screen-printing and stencils. Rani Modi also inaugurated the science block as well as the digital language lab. Dr Setjit Kaur, head of English department, said the lab was equipped with thirteen computers installed with the latest language learning software. The chief guest gave away prizes to the winners. Black market: Kerosene sells at Rs 30 per litre
Bassi Pathana, February 6 Though the affected section of society has been raising its voice, there is nobody to listen to their uproar. There are 11 ration depots and approximately 26,000-litre kerosene is supplied to these depot holders and they are supposed to supply 5 to 10 litre of kerosene to a card holder at the rate of Rs 9.25 per litre. However, those having LPG connection cannot get kerosene oil. The migrants told The Tribune that the ration depot holders created the scarcity of kerosene. They alleged that drums of kerosene oils could be seen at sweets shops, dhabas and in industries. They said they were already reeling under pressure because of rising prices and black marketing has added to their woes. They demanded that the officials should curb the menace of hoarding so they may heave a sigh of relief. Meanwhile, Manoj Banda, secretary, Hindu Organisation, has alleged that certain depot holders sell kerosene oil in black and enter bogus names in their registers. He said the Hindu Organisation would take up the cause of poor people and complain to the higher authorities. Paramjit Singh, assistant food and supply officer (AFSO), Bassi Pathana, admitted that his office was also flooded with complaints of black market. He said soon a drive would be launched to check the menace of black marketing. |

Fake yoga certificate case in JMIC’s court
Chandigarh, February 6 The court now fixed February 8 as the next date of hearing in the case. Prior to magistrate Mahesh Kumar, JMIC Sumit Ghai had cited personal reasons and withdrawn himself from the case, referring it back to the CJM’s court. Defence counsel Harish Bhardwaj said the CJM had earlier marked the case to the court of judicial magistrate (1st class) Sumit Ghai in November, 2008. After hearing both parties for more than a year, Ghai transferred the case to the CJM on January 22. He then referred the case to the court of Mahesh Kumar, who cited personal
reasons. Inspector Ram Gopal had been indicted for submitting a fake yoga certificate in order to seek promotion in 1997. A preliminary inquiry conducted by DSP (CID) Satbir Singh last year had found Ram Gopal guilty of producing a fake certificate, but another inquiry conducted by then ASP Madhur Verma had found him not guilty. A report demanding cancellation of FIR against Ram Gopal had subsequently been submitted in court, following which six cops had challenged the cancellation report. |

Gang of vehicle thieves busted
Chandigarh, February 6 Concerned over the increase in incidents of vehicle theft in the past few days, the crime branch had installed special patrolling and ‘nakas’ in various parts of the city. The accused were identified as Yogesh Sharma of Panchkula and Raju, Monu and Raj Kumar of Ram Darbar. They would be produced in court tomorrow. The police recovered two Hero Honda motorcycles stolen from the railway station and Sector Sector 42, an LML Vespa scooter stolen from Ram Darbar and two Bajaj Chetak scooters stolen from Sectors 22 and 17. Giving details, Charanjit Singh Virk, crime branch in charge, said they had received information that a gang of thieves had been in the city for disposing of spare parts of stolen vehicles. He said the accused, who were arrested during police checking at a ‘naka’ near the level crossing at the Faidan barrier, had admitted that they committed many thefts in the city. Virk said the accused had been arrested earlier in connection with various cases of theft and formed their gang in jail. He said more recoveries were expected after interrogation. |

Chandigarh, February 6 Rakesh Kumar of Ram Darbar lodged a complaint of the theft of his LML Vespa scooter (PB08AD-6354) from his residence on Wednesday. Two cases of theft were registered.

Gurnam Kaur, Principal of Guru Nanak Dev Public School, Sector 35, reported to the police that someone stole a computer and accessories from the school between December 25 and January 6. A case of theft was registered.

Chandigarh, February 6 Batting first, GNPS-36 scored 179 runs for the loss of six wickets in their stipulated 20 overs. Fine all-round performance by Venu, who scored 37 runs off 20 balls, including four fours and two sixes, and took two wickets, ensured him the man of the match award. Mahajan (42 runs off 22 balls) and Gourav Puri (37 off 32) were the other top scorers. For Vivek High School, Anil Sehag was the pick of the bowlers taking three wickets for seven runs in his allotted four overs. In reply, Vivek High School were bundled out for 61 runs in 15.1 overs. Venu, Ankit Dhawan and Manik Khanna restricted the opponent’s batting line-up with their accurate bowling. Ankit claimed three wickets giving away 43 runs, while Manik Khanna took two wickets for 24 runs. In the evenly contested final, Vivek High School mounted pressure on the opponents for the equaliser. Their efforts paid off and were awarded a spot kick in the second half. However, Hardeep Singh wasted the chance, dashing all hopes of Vivek High School of staying in the game. Earlier in the semifinal, Vivek High School prevailed over St John’s School, Sector 26, 1-0 in the tiebreaker after playing a goal-less draw. Mivaan converted the spot kick for Vivek. Hardeep and Parth missed their penalties. Arjun, Ishan and Samarth of St John’s failed in their attempts. In the second semifinal encounter, Mount Carmel edged out St Soldier International School, Sector 28, 1-0. Aniket Nathanu scored the match-winner for Mount Carmel in the regulation period. Kahlon fights back to finish tied sixth
Chandigarh, February 6 The 39-year-old city golfer started with a bang, leading the field along with Mukesh Kumar both firing five under 65 cards on the opening day. Harmeet’s forte was some good chipping and putting. But the Chandigarh golfer fell down the ladder on the subsequent two days to be placed tied 14th with an even par 280 total on the penultimate day. “I did not hit the ball well,” said Harmeet. On the morning of the final day, his coach Jonathan Yarwood (US) went through the video analysis of his game. His verdict was that some thing was wrong in his back swing. Armed with Jonathan’s advice, Harmeet improved on the swing and was in full cry on the final day. He was five under after 15 holes. But then he faltered on the 16th bogeying after hitting a tree. He lost yet another stroke on the last hole to finish with a three under 67 card and a tally of three under 277. Harmeet who finished fourth in the Thailand King's Cup Asian Tour event, in December last year, said: “I ran into some good form towards the end of last year. I hope to carry forward that form into this year as well.” Harmeet who ruled the national amateur circuit for several years is now looking forward to the Avantha Masers where he will rub shoulders with the top golfers of the Asian and European circuit, including Jeev Milkha Singh. He said the DLF Golf and Country Club has been one of his favourite greens. And with his short game in top shape Harmeet is hopeful of a good showing in the Avantha Masters. |
