Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Dr RBS Rawat confirmed receiving today the clearance for start of quarrying on the Gola riverbed.

“We have received a message from the Union Environment and Forest Ministry for re-start of quarrying on the Gola riverbed,” said Dr Rawat. Dr Rawat said the Uttarakhand Forest Department had been repeatedly arguing the state’s case before the ministry and the latter had accepted the department’s plea.

The ban on quarrying had created a storm resulting in soaring prices of construction materials and putting many on the verge of losing their jobs.

The state government had even apprised Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests (independent charge) Jairam Ramesh of the state’s concern over the delay in clearances in latter’s recent visit to the state.

Interestingly, while forest clearance had been given some time back, the clearance for environment was so far eluding the state.

The union minister had then categorically said his ministry was working as per the laws vis-à-vis the Gola river quarrying issue, but had hoped for positive outcome.

The clearance has certain brought cheer to many.
