Respite in sight from water woes
Patiala, January 21 The locality has been getting the supply at a low pressure as a result of which residents of the MIG and LIG apartments are suffering from an acute paucity of drinking water. The pressure as of now is so low it does not reach the first and second floor houses, which forces their residents to install ‘tullu’ pumps. The pumps in turn cause a further drop in pressure in the main water supply lines, affecting residents of the nearby houses. Even otherwise PUDA regulations do not permit installation of such pumps on the main water lines. PUDA subdivisional officer VK Singh said the authority had earmarked a sum of Rs 40 lakh for augmenting the drinking water supply in Urban Estate Phase II. “As part of this scheme a new tubewell is being sunk in a vacant plot at the rear of the MIG houses. A new overhead water reservoir is also being built”, he added. Singh said installation of the new tubewell, expected to become functional by next March, would result in supplying water in first and second floor houses at normal pressure. “The new reservoir tank will also boost water pressure in the other houses in Phase II, ending a perennial problem for the area’s residents”, he added. Explaining the reason behind the fall in water supply in the main lines in the locality, Singh said there had been a drop in the groundwater level. “The level has fallen considerably as a result of which three motors that had been supplying water earlier have not been able to cope with the demand of water as the pressure had fallen drastically”, he added. Karamjit Singh, a resident of Urban Estate Phase II, said: “It will be a ‘new year gift’ from PUDA to residents who had been grappling with the problem of low water pressure. At present water reaches the first and second floor houses only in a trickle”. |
