Residential school for underprivileged kids
Ropar, January 7 Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti inaugurated the school today. The school will admit 50 students from the underprivileged section of society and given them the opportunity to get into mainstream education. It’s working will be spread over a period of six months. Two other schools — Baghir Vidyalaya (for deaf) at Khairabad and Blue Bird School, Ropar — are being run under the same project and have 50 students each in them. Bharti said the school would impart free education to children besides providing them with free lodging, uniforms, diet and recreation activities. “The aim of the special school is to inculcate a habit of going to school amidst underprivileged children,” Bharti added. Former Rotary governor and improvement trust chairman Dr RS Parmar said the club would also ensure good health services for the students. Dr Parmar added that club would make efforts to extend the period of school to another six months. Rotary Club governor Chetan Aggarwal announced to donate $ 1,000 (around Rs 46, 000) to the new school. The local Inner Wheel Club has also contributed towards setting up the project. The club has donated 15 beds for the project. Salora panchayat, too, contributed towards the project. |

2.44 lakh kids to be given polio drops
Patiala, January 7 Giving this information, Patiala Deputy Commissioner Deepinder Singh said in order to eradicate polio, everyone in society should play a positive role in spreading awareness about the importance of administering polio drops to the children. Presiding over a meeting of the task force constituted by the health department for undertaking the polio drive, Deepinder said there had been a drastic decline in the number of polio cases throughout the country because of the polio drive at the national level. “In 2009, from a total of 703 polio cases, four were from Punjab. Need of the hour is to ensure that no one suffers from polio and it can be made possible only if all sections of society play a constructive role in the success of the drives initiated by the health department for administering the polio drops,” asserted DC. Meanwhile, taking a strong note of non-implementation of the National Insurance Scheme in Patiala district, Deepinder instructed officials of the health department to ensure that all government schemes were executed and implemented properly. |

Free medical camp
Patiala, January 7 Dr Sukhdip S Boparai, chief consultant, and Dr Anuradha Raj from Patiala Eye Hospital and Lasik Laser Centre, examined school students and staff. Dr Boparai delivered a lecture on eye care and traffic rules. A free dental check-up of all students was also conducted by Dr Sukhdeep Kaur and Dr Manpreet Kaur, who distributed free toothpastes to poor students. School manager Mann Singh Sethi inaugurated the camp and appreciated the efforts of the club members. KK Mangla, president of club, HS Sethi, PRO of the club, DR Gupta, vice-chairman, SK Kochar, secretary, Krishan Kumar, director, Atma Ram Verma, cashier, Bhupinder Singh and Kuldeep Singh were also present on the occasion. |

Health dept collects samples
Fatehgarh Sahib, January 7 District health officer Dr Jagpal Singh said the samples were collected from government schools of Mehdudan village, Bero Majri, Naryana, Rasulpur and Garolian villages. He said all samples had been sent to the laboratory and result were awaited. |
Judicial custody for Pritpal
Chandigarh, January 7 The prosecution sought a three-day remand for the accused in the court of judicial magistrate Sumit Ghai for further probe in the case. Hundreds of Pritpal’s followers queued up in front of the courts complex much before he was brought to the court. They were carrying banners and placards in their hands against the administration, charging it with falsely implicating him. Seeking his further remand, UT senior standing counsel Anupam Gupta stated that Pritpal had, during earlier interrogation, disclosed details of his bank accounts and names of chartered accountants he had been in touch with. Pritpal had been tight-lipped on the crucial question as to who had actually signed the general power of attorney as Kamaljit Kaur, said the counsel in the packed courtroom, adding that further custodial interrogation was required to unravel facts. |

Man acquitted in rape case
Chandigarh, January 7 Additional District and Sessions Judge GC Garg today cleared Binesh, a resident of Hallo Majra, of all charges after the victim failed to identify the accused. He was arrested by the police on allegations of kidnapping and raping his neighbour, a minor girl. A case was registered in October 2008 after a complaint was filed by the victim’s father. It was alleged that the accused, Binesh, took away his neighbour’s minor daughter and later raped her on the pretext of marrying her. The accused was, however, married
earlier. However, the victim later failed to identify the accused. While testifying before the court, the victim denied having been kidnapped or raped by the accused. Even the victim’s father refused that his daughter had ever gone missing or he had lodged any such complaint with the police, thereby weakening the prosecution’s case. |

Fruit-seller murder case solved
Chandigarh, January 7 The police said four of the accused stabbed Rajesh Kumar to death after robbing him of Rs 1,200 near the Dadu Majra Colony on December 29. DSP (South) Jaswant Singh Khaira said the accused, all in their early twenties, were drug addicts and committed robbery and snatching in the city to buy intoxicants. During interrogation, they admitted to have committed over 24 incidents of looting and snatching in the city so far. The police had rounded up several suspects from the Dadu Majra Colony and other parts of the city. The police found that Karamvir, Vijay Kumar and Vishal were involved in the murder. The police had gathered information from sources and learnt that the accused, along with other members of the gang, had decided to leave the city. Acting on the information, the police laid a trap on the road separating Sectors 38 and 39 around midnight and arrested Karamvir, Vijay Kumar, Vishal, Ravi, Sohan and Ajay. The police said Ravi admitted to his involvement in over 24 incidents of robbery and assault. As not all these incidents had been reported to the police, it would be difficult to ascertain the exact number of criminal activities committed by the accused. He added that the accused had wreaked terror in the area. The DSP said the police was yet to arrest the seventh member of the gang, identified as Varun of the Dadu Majra Colony, who was also involved in the murder. He further said Ravi and Ajay were involved in a case of assault and booked under Sections 324, 506 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code on January 5 while Ravi, Ajay and Sohan had been booked in a snatching case. |

Woman killed in road mishap
Chandigarh, January 7 She was hit by the school bus near the colony around 8 am when she was going for work. She was hit from rear and was seriously injured in the mishap. She was rushed to the Sector-32 Government Medical College and Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. The police has registered a case against the unidentified driver. Liquor seized
The police arrested Sanjay, a resident of Nehru Colony, Sector 52, from the same colony last night while he was allegedly carrying 25 quarters of country-made wine. A case under the Excise Act has been registered.
Stolen
Archna Devi, a resident of Sector 27, reported that someone had stolen her Maruti car (CH-03-V-4691) from in front of her residence during the intervening night of January 5 and 6. A case has been registered.
Theft
Satyajit R Vaish of New Delhi reported that someone had stolen laptop from his car (CH-04-5065), which was parked in Sector 26 yesterday. A case of theft has been registered. |

Nakireddi, Mohit in final
Chandigarh, January 7 Nakireddi will face third seeded Mohit Mayur Jayaprakash in the final, while in the girls final, sixth seeded Rishika Sunkara will face hard-hitting Zi Yang of China. In the boys singles semifinal contests, Nakireddi toppled Sumeet Shinde in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, while in the second semifinal, third seed Mohit Mayur Jayaprakash ended the winning streak of eighth seed Shahbaaz Khan with straight sets 6-2, 6-4 victory. Chandigarh, January 7 In the last match to decide the semifinalists here today, Kulbeer Singh’s quick fire 79 helped DAV-8 beat CM Eleven by 141 runs. Elected to bat first after winning the match, DAV scored 226 for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs. Kulbeer 79 of 28 (six fours and eight sixes) and Akash 29 with two fours and two sixes were the top scorers for DAV team. For CM Eleven, Tushar and Sourav were the pick of the bowlers as they took two wickets each giving away 29 and 35 runs, respectively. In reply, CM Eleven failed to achieve the target and could score only 85 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their stipulated 20 overs. Ashish Thakur was the pick of the bowlers of DAV team as he took three wickets in his allotted four overs giving away only six runs. Raman Bishnoi with two wickets for 16 runs was the other main wicket taker. Ajay Ashish was the only batsman who faced the DAV bowlers with challenge and scored 23 runs of 27 balls. UP, HP to fight for volleyball title
Chandigarh, January 7 UP players were more organised in their defence and attack, as they defeated hosts Principal Accountant General, Haryana, by 25-13, 25-19, 25-20 in the semifinal match. In the match lasting 66 minutes, UP demolished their rivals with their powerful smashes and placing the ball at the vacant spot. Vimal Kumar Pandey, Ravi Kant Yadav, Sanjay Rai and Manoj Soni engineered victory for UP. For Haryana, Ajit, Deepak and Gurtej tried to match their opponents but could not meet much success. Chandigarh, January 7 Paramveer beat Sunny Khandare, Maharashtra, in the semifinals of the tournament, while Nihit Rawal, Chandigarh, reached into the final stage by beating second seeded Sumit Pal Singh, Jammu and Kashmir. The first semifinal played between Paramveer Bajwa and Sunny Khandare was a one-sided affair, as Paramveer won the battle by 6-3, 6-1 in just 45 minutes. Football tournament from Jan 18
Chandigarh, January 7 Chandigarh Football Association (CFA) general secretary Rakesh Bakshi said the CFA would provide technical and organisational assistance to the High Life Management Calcutta. He said the organisers would provide tea and lunch to all participants along with their coaches. He said a team would consist of 10 players, seven as playing and three as substitutes, besides allowing rolling substitution. There is no entry fee and a school can field two teams. Entry closes on January 16, he added. Bakshi said boys born after September 1, 1994 were eligible to take part in the seven-a-side football tournament and warned that if any player was found overage, the whole team would be suspended from the tournament. |
