A labourer was killed on the spot while five others sustained serious injuries when a tractor trolley, loaded with iron rods, overturned near the local JCT Mills on the national highway last night.

3 booked for murder

Three persons, identified as Kapur Singh, Jaswinder Singh and Baggo, have been booked for the murder of Sakatar Singh (35) of Nagla Guru village. A minor dispute between the parties led to the murder.

Cong’s ex-servicemen cell demands permanent DSWO
Nawanshahr, January 3
The district unit of the Ex-servicemen Cell (PPCC), at a meeting held here at the Punjab Mata Vidhyawati Bhawan, under the chairmanship of Lt-Col Jernail Singh, has urged the concerned authorities to appoint a permanent District Sainik Welfare Officer (DSWO) in the district for the convenience of the ex-servicemen and their dependant families.

Fog: Four killed, 8 hurt in accident

Nawanshahr, January 3
Foggy conditions, prevailing in the region for the past many days, led to an accident here today which left four persons dead and eight others injured.

The dead were identified as Sadhu Singh, Jagir Kaur, Amarjit Kaur and Jaspal Kaur of Bagrolan village in Sangrur while eight injured were Karnail Singh, Jeet Singh, Jora Singh, Jaswinder Kaur, Chhinder Kaur, Gurmail Kaur, Harbans Kaur and Jarnail Kaur.

The incident happened when a Tata Sumo, in which all were traveling, collided with a truck, near Paniali Kalan village on Nawanshahr- Chandigarh highway in the morning due to low visibility. The truck was lying tilted due to bursting of tyre. The injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital, Ropar, from where they were referred to the PGI Chandigarh.

Traffic movement affected; farmers cheerful after rains

Jalandhar, January 3
As cold wave continues to haunt the region, heavy rains coupled with fog here today affected normal life, especially vehicular traffic. The rains forced the general public to remain indoors for most of the day.

On the other side, the farmers were a cheerful lot following the showers. The farmers, who were concerned over the long dry spell, were seen in their fields.

Jaswinder Singh Sangha, General Secretary, Jalandhar Potato Growers Association, said the rains were suitable for every crop. Roadside vendors, rickshaw pullers and owners of small business establishments keeping themselves warm by lighting bonfire. — TNS

Train timings hit

Pathankot, January 3
Several superfast trains were running late by 3 to 6 hours behind their scheduled timing due to dense fog in the region. The trains which running late, included Tata Moori from Tata Nagar to Jammu Tawi was late by six hours, Pooja Express by four hours, Jhehlum Express by six hours, Himgiri Express by five hours, Swaraj Express by three hours, Jammu Mail by two hours, Ahmedabad Express by three hours, Sialdah Express by two hours, Malwa Express by two hours and Delhi-Jammu Tawi Special Express Train by two and half hours. — OC

Architects suggest changes in city masterplan
Urge the JDA to realign rail lines in the shape of tunnels to ease traffic

Architects here have suggested that the Jalandhar Development Authority (JDA) should incorporate realigning of rail lines in the shape of tunnels to free the ground surface areas from traffic congestion.

The architects have made several suggestions to the JDA, to make several changes in the proposed master-plan of Jalandhar, after holding a detailed discussion during a seminar, in this context, held under the aegis of the Jalandhar Sub-centre of the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) here on Sunday.

Honorary National Joint Secretary of IIA Jit Kumar Gupta, also Director of the College of Architecture IET at Bhaddal, was present at the seminar. Architects Surinder Bahga, Dinesh Bhagat, Rajinderpal, Irwindeep Singh, Gagandeep Singh Ghai, Aman Makol, Lalit Verma and Hemant Bhandari participated actively in the discussion. The northern chapter of small and medium industries also submitted their views.

Expressing his views, Gupta said though the JDA made a proposal to construct as many as 25 Railway Over Bridges (ROBs), tunnels should also be made to free the ground surface area from traffic congestion, with priority attached to the main line.

The JDA has prepared a proposed masterplan of Jalandhar, which includes 780 square kilometer area falling under Jalandhar, Kapurthala and Nawanshahar districts. Anyone can make suggestions to the proposed draft by January 7. Architects also suggested that the option of mixed land use needed to be exercised with caution and to be focused only in specific areas rather than as a policy on all areas.

Toll Exemption For Journalists

On the lines of the tall promises made to the journalist community, Public Relations Minister, Punjab, Sekha Singh Sekhwan today assured journalists of the formation of an accreditation committee to provide them with accreditation cards and relaxation from toll plaza.

He also assured non-resident Indians of the formation of fast-track courts in all the district headquarters of the state, to ensure speedy delivery of justice.

Sekhwan said talks with senior journalists and owners of various media organisations would be held in the near future, to mull the formation of an accreditation committee, which would have representatives from government and journalists, both.

He further stated that after a meeting with the Principal Secretary, Public Relations, Director and Secretary, PWD, notifications have been sent to contractors of toll plazas to relieve journalists from the charges.

He said press cards, in this regard, would be issued soon.

“The problems faced by the journalist community will be solved and special facilities would be provided to it by April 13,” he said, while addressing the gathering at the Press Club, Jalandhar, hosted in his honour.

He said while their job was quite difficult, the media should avoid sensationalising news which causes a sense of fear among the people.

The Public Relations Department will stand by the media, he said, adding that it would be upgraded and its proper working ensured by providing new vehicles, required infrastructure and sufficient staff to the department.

Meanwhile, addressing a gathering of NRIs at the Country Inns and Suites here, he ensured the migrant Indians of easy delivery of justice through fast-track courts to be instituted at all the District Headquarters.

He said one such court has already been formed in the city.

A letter requesting the approval of the mission has been sent to the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

While the Punjab government will bear the expenses of the construction of buildings and infrastructure, judges would be appointed by the High Court, he said.

Taking special interest in the issue of problems being faced by the Indians living abroad, Sekhwan said he would visit various countries and would meet concerned authorities to find solutions to their problems.

He informed the gathering that the Punjab government has established six NRI police stations to look into their problems, adding that an NRI Bhawan has also been formed in the city at the cost of Rs 2 crore.

He further said provisions have been made in the revenue courts to solve cases related to NRI disputes within 90 days.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, President, NRI Sabha, Kamaljeet Singh demanded the appointment of female police and inspector-rank officials at special NRI police stations.

He also demanded constitution of fast-track revenue courts and special judicial courts at the district level, appointment of NRI Nambardars in the remaining villages and NRI Sabha offices in all the district administrative complexes throughout the state.

IBM-DGC job fest a hit with engineering students

A major employment generation initiative by global technical leader, IBM, in collaboration with the Doaba Group of Colleges (DGC), was organised at the Ghataur village, situated on the Nawanshahr-Chandigarh highway, here on Sunday.

The placement drive made by the world IT leader, a first of its kind in the state, was inaugurated by Harcharan Singh Bains, media advisor to the CM, Punjab.

He lauded the initiative of the Doaba Group of Colleges for acting as a bridge between the engineering graduates as well as the reputed IT company.

Giving details, Manjit Singh, Executive Director, Doaba Group of Colleges, said the job fest drew unprecedented response from engineering graduates with over 7,000 aspirants turning up for various post in the company. The recruitment process started with the pre-placement talk, followed by aptitude test, group discussion and final interviews, HR and technical rounds of interview.

Manoj Srivastava, on behalf of IBM, said the company would be hiring the services of engineering students for the posts of software trainees, web designers, business analysts, search engine optimisers and other technical jobs.

Amritsar schools closed till January 9

In view of the bone-chilling cold, with temperatures hovering around the sub-zero levels, District Magistrate Kahan Singh Pannu today ordered the closure of all schools including government, private and recognised ones, till January 9.

In the order released here, Pannu said the dense fog which has engulfed the region and severe cold conditions, especially during the morning, were leading to road mishaps.

The decision has thus been taken to save children from such mishaps and to protect them from various health ailments.

It is pertinent to mention here that Amritsar remained the coldest region in the plains. People preferred to remain indoors while life remained paralysed.

One dead, 5 hurt as tractor overturns

Phagwara, January 3
A labourer was killed on the spot while five others sustained serious injuries when a tractor trolley, loaded with iron rods, overturned near the local JCT Mills on the national highway last night.

Reports said the tractor-trolley driver lost his control owing to which the vehicle turned turtle on the fly-over. Road traffic remained disrupted on national highway number one for more than an hour due to the accident. The deceased was identified as Sonu of Sarihwal village (district Firozepur). The injured, including Pala, Swaran, Bakhshish, Deepu and Ravinder, were admitted to the local civil hospital. — OC

3 booked for murder

Amritsar, January 3
Three persons, identified as Kapur Singh, Jaswinder Singh and Baggo, have been booked for the murder of Sakatar Singh (35) of Nagla Guru village. A minor dispute between the parties led to the murder.

Bikar Singh, brother of the deceased, in his statement to the police alleged that the accused entered their house and hit Sakatar Singh with a wooden plank. He was rushed to the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital with serious head injury where he died.

No arrest has been made so far, said the police authorities while a case under sections 302, 452 and 34 of the IPC has been registered in this regard at Jandiala police station falling under Amritsar rural police district.

Cong’s ex-servicemen cell demands permanent DSWO

The district unit of the Ex-servicemen Cell (PPCC), at a meeting held here at the Punjab Mata Vidhyawati Bhawan, under the chairmanship of Lt-Col Jernail Singh, has urged the concerned authorities to appoint a permanent District Sainik Welfare Officer (DSWO) in the district for the convenience of the ex-servicemen and their dependant families.

Presently, the District Sainik Welfare Officer, Hoshiarpur, has been given additional charge of the district, and visits the office every Tuesday and Friday. Besides, the cell also decided to take up the issue of ex-servicemen being charged toll tax - at a barrier on the Nawanshahr-Ludhiana Road, despite the fact that ex-servicemen have been exempted from paying toll tax in the state - with the concerned authorities.
