Allotment of Houses
HC: Stay to continue
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 22
Just about a week after the Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled the process of allotment of government houses was apparently “arbitrary”, Justice Kanwaljit Singh Ahluwalia today directed the continuation of the stay on the allotment of old type III, IV, V, VI, VII houses, along with new type VI houses.

Issuing the directions, Justice Ahluwalia made it clear that the stay order would continue for the time being till the next date of hearing on January 11, 2010.

On previous hearing, the judge had ruled: “Counsel for the respondent has failed to explain as to how without taking into consideration the pay-scale/seniority, the houses of the higher types have been marked for the officers of the Chandigarh administration. The lists supplied have more to hide than to disclose. No effort has been made to explain to this court what is the criteria regarding determination of the type of house for allotment. It is stated that the houses having plots of less dimension and covered area have been assigned higher type, whereas plots having more size and covered area have been assigned lower type.”

“The process of allotment seems to be arbitrary. Therefore, there is need for the respondents to justify the same,” he had said.

Kabir Trophy
St Kabir, St John’s set up title clash
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 22
Traditional rivals St Kabir High School and St John’s High School, both of Sector 26, stormed into the final of the Under-13 St Kabir Football Trophy at St Kabir School ground here today.

Cheered on by the home crowd, St Kabir played an organised game to outplay New Public School, Sector 18, 3-0, while formidable St John’s School faced little resistance from the newly raised football team of Ashiana School, beating them 5-0.

St Kabir School enjoyed the territorial supremacy and had better control of the ball. Udey emerged their star performer with a brilliant brace. Kabir could have won by a bigger margin but for New Public School goalkeeper Vikas, who put up a fine display and saved at least six goals.

Playing on their home turf, St Kabir forged ahead in the seventh minute. Getting possession of the ball from the centre line, Udey dashed into the box dribbling past two defenders.

Before NPS advancing goalkeeper Vikas could thwart Udey’s attempt, St Kabir striker dispatched the ball into the rival goal.

Three minutes later, Udey increased the margin 2-0. Rahul initiated the goal-bearing move and passed the ball to Aman who further passed it to Udey to drive home the second goal.

The winners crossed over with a 2-0 advantage. On resumption, the NPS defence contained St Kabir strikers with quick clearances and alert goalkeeper Vikas also showed good anticipation. But NPS goal fell again in the 43 rd minute. Following a goalmouth melee, Rahul placed the ball in the right corner of the goal.

In the second semifinal, winner of the St Soldier’s International School Football Trophy St John’s School dominated their opponents Ashiana School. After wasting a number of chances with their forwards misdirecting their shots, they got the lead in the 10th minute though Nitin.

After tasting success, St John’s School did not look back. Krishna and Sufi contributed one goal each in the 22nd and 30th minutes, respectively. Maintaining their pressure, St John’s added two more goals to their kitty through Harshal who struck in the 28th and 35th minutes.

Though ‘inexperienced’ Ashiana School made their exit, they were not disgraced as in their maiden appearance in a state-level tournament they left their impression by reaching the semifinals.

Tomorrow’s fixture (final): St Kabir High School versus St John’s School (11 am).

Hockey nursery opened
Our Correspondent

Bassi Pathana, December 22
The Indian hockey will regain its lost glory. The only thing holding it back was red tape, said Pargat Singh, sports director of Punjab, after inaugurating Mehar Baba Charitable (MBCT) Hockey Nursery here today.

“It is unfortunate that the Indian team could not qualify for the Champion’s Trophy. We could not properly utilise the services of foreign coaches. We spend huge amounts on them but utilise their services only to train the national team, instead of taking them to the grassroots.”

Highlighting the efforts of the state government in promoting hockey, he said there were only 25 hockey teams in the state when he joined the post. The number had gone up to 250 now.

He said the sports department had started three well-equipped regional hockey centres for Malwa, Majha and Doaba regions with Astro Turf facility.

These centres had started producing good stuff. He urged parents to encourage their children to take to hockey.

MBCT patron Prof HS Mejie said they had selected 52 boys and girls between the age group of five and 10 years. Specialised coaches had been engaged and children had been given hockey kits.
