Cuttack, December 21
Sachin Tendulkar narrowly missed getting his 46th ODI ton, as he remained unbeaten on 96 to guide the Indian chase in reply to Sri Lanka’s modest total of 239 at Barabati Stadium here today. Tendulkar, who opened with stand-in captain Virender Sehwag, used all his experience to ensure that the hosts take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

Sehwag and Tendulkar hit the ground running, and after a couple of cautious overs, the Delhi maestro launched a denting attack on the Sri Lankan bowlers. He was finally caught by Dilshan off the bowling of Welegedara. Gambhir, who had not been at his best in recent ODIs, joined Tendulkar and the two steadied the innings before Gambhir was dismissed for 32. Yuvraj, who sat out the first two games, hung around to score an uneventful 23 before being dismissed by Welegedara and finally Karthik and Tendulkar saw the hosts home.

Earlier, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja produced his career-best four-wicket haul as India bundled out Sri Lanka for a modest 239. Electing to bat, Sri Lanka made a rousing start before they lost way in the middle overs as Indian slow bowlers brought themselves back into the game.

Jadeja claimed four for 32 - his best from 12 ODIs - while Ashish Nehra and Ishant Sharma took two wickets apiece to bring an end to Sri Lanka innings in 44.2 overs. Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan gave Sri Lanka a perfect start going with a run rate in an excess of 10. Captain Kumar Sangakkara then stood in a 100 run partnership with Tharanga as the Lankans looked set for a big score before the Indians came back strongly.

Sri Lanka scored 14 runs from the first over from Zaheer Khan, who struggled with his line with four wides. Runs came at ease for Sri Lanka who raced to 50 in 3.4 overs with Dilshan and Tharanga not giving time for Zaheer and Ishant Shrarma to settle down.

Zaheer conceded 26 runs from his first two overs before Sehwag brought in Ashish Nehra in the fifth over.

Nehra managed to curb Tharanga's strokeplay with four dot balls and his tight over almost gave India the breakthrough in the form of a suicidal run-out of Dilshan. — PTI

Chandigarh, December 21
History is chock-a-block with people who have changed the course of thoughts, lives and at times nations too, with sheer will power. These men are the ones, who make history worth going back to every time we feel that our day and age is running out of heroes. But what do you do when someone makes creating history his past time? What do you do when a man, from a remote corner of a developing country, goes on the world stage, and claims as his own, what no one had dreamt of? What do you do when the world’s No. 1 boxer (75kg) Vijender Singh says, “Chalo bhai, pucho kya puchna hai (Alright brother, ask whatever you want to)”. Well…quite simply, you start an interview with the next line.

Q: How much has life changed in the past two years?

A: Not much actually. I am still the same person. Just that I don’t get to spend much time with my family. Even earlier, there was not a lot of time because of training and everything, but especially now, I feel short on time. Rest all the things have stayed the way they are, things that matter that is.

Q: How difficult is it to get used to being a celebrity? And coming from a small village in Haryana, was it hard to get used to the life in big cities?

A: Not at all. Life has been smooth as I don’t think too much about stuff and just do what I have to. I have complete confidence in what I do, and I always back myself. About being a celebrity, well, I am not one, so I don’t have any issues to deal with. I am a boxer, who takes tremendous amount of pride in representing his country.

Q: As a child did you ever imagine that one day the entire country would be looking upto you?

A: Nobody can plan out these things. It is a great honour for me that I get so much adulation for doing what I have always liked to do. But I did not think whether I will be able to do this or that as a kid.

Q: You don’t feel like a celebrity, but you cannot deny that you have a huge fan base, especially among girls?

A: Once more I just want to say that I like the fact that so many people care about me, and wish me the best for everything. And girls or boys, it doesn’t matter as long as it creates awareness about boxing among the youth.

Q: How was the Queen’s Baton Relay experience for you, especially dining with the Queen on your birthday?

A: It was a privilege. A real once-in-a-lifetime experience. It showed me that I had come a real long way, and to be there with my father was a very emotional moment too. I felt really proud of my roots, my background, everything. It showed that with hardwork and the right guidance one can always make his mark.

Q: Among the boxers coming up now, who do you feel can carry on your legacy?

A: There are many good boxers coming up, especially you should look out for Balwinder. He is a 64kg category fighter and with hard work he should make the country proud.

Q: What about future plans? When do you wish to settle down and are there actresses in line too?

A: My future is in the ring, not with the ring right now. I will obviously get married some day but not in the foreseeable future. And I would like to marry a nice Haryanvi girl over an actress anyday. Wherever I go, I can never forget my roots. If finishing up at the right place is important, then remembering where you started off is also crucial.

English Premier League
Sluggish Chelsea held by Hammers

London, December 21
Frank Lampard converted three penalties but only one counted as his Chelsea side pulled four points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at West Ham United on Sunday. The England midfielder, back at his old Upton Park stomping ground, kept cool after referee Mike Dean ordered two retakes of his penalty early in the second half because players from both sides encroached into the area. Lampard's goal gave Chelsea 41 points from 18 games, four ahead of champions Manchester United who are second after losing 3-0 at Fulham on Saturday. West Ham stayed second from bottom, a point ahead of Portsmouth.

Chelsea, though, gave another lacklustre display and have collected five points from a possible 12 in the league this month. United have also been inconsistent, suffering two defeats in their last three games. Elsewhere on Sunday, Wolverhampton Wanderers moved up to 12th spot by beating 14th-placed Burnley 2-0 and Everton drew 1-1 at home to Birmingham City.

The result took Birmingham up to seventh on 28 points while Everton lie 15th. After Chelsea were awarded a fortunate spot kick when a 61st-minute challenge by Matthew Upson on substitute Daniel Sturridge was deemed a foul, former West Ham player Lampard showed nerves of steel to convert his thrice-taken penalty.

“I didn’t need that at all, especially after missing one a few weeks ago (in the 2-1 defeat at Manchester City),” Lampard told Sky Sports. “I wish he’d have made me retake the Man City one,” joked the smiling midfielder.

Chelsea were sluggish for long periods and fell behind on the stroke of halftime to Italian Alessandro Diamanti's penalty after England defender Ashley Cole fouled Jack Collison. West Ham worked hard and thoroughly deserved a share of the spoils at the end of the London derby.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy made nine changes to the controversial line-up that lost 3-0 at Manchester United on Tuesday and was rewarded with goals from Nenad Milijas and Kevin Doyle against Burnley.

At Goodison Park, Everton took an early lead against Birmingham when Bilyaletdinov gathered a Saha flick on five minutes and slammed the ball into the net. However, Birmingham stretched their unbeaten league run to nine matches when Sebastian Larsson finished off a slick passing move in the 22nd minute. — Reuters
