With another death, swine flu toll 10
Ludhiana, December 18
With one more resident succumbing to swine flu at Deepak Hospital in Ludhiana, the death toll has reached 10. Five of the 10 deceased were from Ludhiana while the others were from other districts of Punjab and were undergoing treatment here.

Disregarding the Supreme Court’s directives on encroachments on public land by religious institutions, a ‘rath yatra’ (procession) has been permitted by the civic body to be held in the city tomorrow, resulting in mushrooming of numerous makeshift structures that are illegal.

Armed youths flee, cops probing incident

The city police is looking into yesterday’s incident in which a group of heavily armed youths fled, leaving behind their weapons, after they were noticed standing outside a vacant plot at the rear of Flamez Mall in the city. They had been carrying sharp-edged weapons including swords and knives as well as blunt edged ones.

IT raid on marriage palace

A team from the excise and taxation department conducted a raid on Stallon Manor, a marriage palace on the Pakhowal road, here today. According to sources, several discrepancies were found and some documents were seized by officials.

Three chemists caught selling psychotropic drugs
Ludhiana, December 18
Officials of the health & family welfare department today seized psychotropic drugs in a raid conducted on three retail chemists in the city. The drug stores - RK Medicos and Bajaj Medicos, both located in Jawahar Nagar Camp, and another in Haibowal were found selling capsules and syrups falling under scheduled ‘H’ drugs without prescription.

Insurance firm told to compensate customer
Ludhiana, December 18
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has ordered United India Insurance Company to pay Rs 51,280 as compensation along with interest to an aggrieved consumer, whose motor insurance claim it had refused and who had to bear the cost of getting his damaged vehicle repaired.

Youth killed, 4 hurt in accident

Amandeep Singh (17), a resident of nearby Mau Sahib village, was killed while four others sustained serious injuries in a collision between two motorcycles near Partapu Pura village.

‘Mushaira’ in Sahir’s memory today
Ludhiana, December 18
Jashn-e-Sahir, the 37th interanational ‘mushaira’ in memory of Urdu poet Sahir Ludhianvi, will be organised by the Adeeb International (Sahir Cultural Academy) at Pandey Auditorium, Nehru Sidhant Kendra, on December 19 from 7:30 pm. According to Dr Kewal Dheer, chairman of the academy, Urdu poets from all over India will participate in the event.

2 held with fake notes
Mullanpur Dakha, December 18
Two persons were nabbed yesterday and fake currency worth over Rs 30,000 was seized from their possession. They were arrested following a raid conducted at the bus stand area. SHO Prem Singh said they were tipped off that the accused, identified as Gurnam Singh of Jattan Rihana village near Kapurthala, Balram Singh, alias Vicky of Dehlon, Jassi of Janakpuri in Ludhiana, and Dilavar Singh of Balachour village in Nawanshahr would be visiting Mullanpur.
