Heritage fest gets under way
Kalka, December 18 Built in the 17th century by Aurangzeb’s architect and foster brother, Fidai Khan, appointed as the governor of Punjab, this “Garden Palace” has been laid and curated on a classical plan of the Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir. This unique garden has been laid at seven levels on a descending scale. The garden comprises a central water channel (the inspiration), three principle terraces, axial plan, two square enclosures, corner bastions, gates at the ends of the central axis and cross axis, pavilion and palaces - Sheesh Mahal, Rang Mahal and Jal Mahal - along the central axis. In the evening Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan and Ustad Imran Khan the renowned classical and Sufiana singer regaled the audience with their performance. Tourist from Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali and from various parts of Himachal enjoyed thronged the venue. Various competitions were also held on the opening day. |

Scorpio vehicle catches fire
Kharar, December 18 They told the police that as soon as they crossed the bridge connecting Mohali and Kharar, smoke started emanating from the vehicle and the central locking system got locked from inside. Despite repeated attempts, they failed to open the windows and had no option but to break open the windows in order to escape. On coming out, they tried to open the bonnet of car but it had caught fire. The SUV on fire unleashed panic among truckers, whose trucks were parked nearby. Tejvir and Govinder called up the police control room, which further called up the Fire Department. One fire tender reached the site, which could not douse the flames as less water available. Then second fire tender was summoned. But before the second fire tender could start his work, the SUV had already been consigned to flames and was charred beyond recognition. Meanwhile, the police present at the spot, directed truckers to navigate their vehicles away from the burning car. The charred vehicle was not steered away from the spot till filing of this report in the evening. |

Four held with smack
Rajpura, December 18 The accused have been identified as Yadvinder, resident of Sirhind, Manjit, from Patiala, Kulwinder Singh, resident of Tripri and Charanjit Singh, resident of Kurukshetra. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against them after 3 gm of smack was recovered from each of them. They were produced before the Magistrate and were sent to one-day police remand. The police is investigating the case. |

Two brothers killed in road accident
Rajpura, December 18 The boys who were riding a motorcycle and were on their way back to Shambhu from Ambala were hit by a speeding truck from the rear when they attempted to cross the road. While Pradeep died immediately, his brother was rushed to a hospital in Ambala where he was declared dead on arrival. Police officials said a case in this connection would be registered against the truck driver. Post-mortem of the bodies was conducted at Ambala Civil Hospital. The police is investigating the incident. |

Bedi appointed director of Rayat centre
Ropar, December 18 Vice-chairman of Rayat-Bahra Group Gurvinder Singh Bahra said Bedi’s appointment aimed at improving efficiency of the centre. Bedi has served in the department of physics, PU, Chandigarh, for nearly four decades. He has to his credit a large number of publications in international journals. He has visited various universities in Sweden and Germany. He has also organised various events like “All-India Vice-Chancellors’ Conference”, “Congregation of the Indian Academy of Sciences” and “All-India Science Congress” during his tenure.

Whiskey sent to police custody
Chandigarh, December 18 Meanwhile, Whiskey was produced today at a local court that remanded him to six days of police custody. The cops said they wanted to interrogate him in a case of cheating, forgery and violation of the Arms Act, which was registered at the Sector 34 police station on April 28 this year. The police sought ten days’ custodial interrogation of Whiskey from the court, saying it wanted to take him to Baj Pur in Uttrakhand from where he, along with his other accomplices, had procured illegal weapons and fake seals with which he forged documents. The cops had earlier arrested 23-year-old Harpreet Singh alias Pitta, a resident of Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, along with a Ford Fiesta car displaying a fake registration number plate, recovering two cartridges from the vehicle. Whiskey, who was then accompanying Pitta, managed to flee on that occasion. The police also claimed to have recovered the weapon along with five live cartridges with which Harjinder Singh Dhillon was killed on November 25. According to the cops, Whiskey used to stay in hostel no 1 of Panjab University and frequently met one Hukam Chand alias Hukma. Whiskey had looted Rs 5 lakh in cash from a liquor vend in Mohali along with Hukma and others. |

Chandigarh, December 18 In an affidavit submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Superintendent of Police Madhur Verma said, “Similar number of calls were received by him (the accused) from Samwartak Singh over a period of six months. Verma added Samwartak Singh was, as such, joined in the probe. But “from the investigations conducted so far no material evidence on his involvement has come on record”. Verma asserted the investigations showed the accused, Jolly, was trying to cheat and maneuver the potential candidates by giving them false hopes and promises of job, in lieu of money. The UT administration has always withdrawn the charge of DPI (schools) from Haryana Civil Services (HCS) officer after his name figured in the teachers’ recruitment scam, but was given a clean chit by the UT police, who could not find any material evidence to prove the officer’s involvement in the scam. Acting on a public interest litigation on fake supply bills for cancer medicine, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, comprising Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal, today issued notice of motion to Major General Shamsher Singh of Command Hospital, Chandimandir. The Bench also issued notices to the Chief of Staff, GOC-In-C, Western Command, and another respondent for February 19 on the petition filed by a Sector 7 Panchkula resident. The petitioner has alleged fake supply bills were being procured for purchase of Sprycel used for treatment of blood cancer. The modus operandi was allegedly that supply orders for purchase of four to seven tablets were being placed to avoid permission from superior officers. Case of missing NRI boy given to CBI
Justice Rajive Bhalla of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday entrusted the case of missing NRI boy Gurinderjit Singh from the Dasuya area to the CBI in the wake of Punjab police agreeing to hand over the case to the central agency. In fact, the case relates to the custody of a minor, who has surrepitiously been removed from the custody of this court and illegally taken to England. Though he was traced in England and entrusted to the custody of foster parents, the minor has been abducted and not traceable. Justice Rajive Bhalla ordered the Dasuya police to handover all the documents, record etc to the CBI, Chandigarh, within a week, and also directed the Punjab government to extend all assistance to the CBI whose officer has been given a month to submit the report. The case will now come up for further hearing on February 17,2010. |

5 booked in dowry death case
Zirakpur, December 18 The accused have been identified as Pawan Kumar (husband), Somnath (father-in-law), Kamla (mother-in-law), Shiksha (sister-in-law) and Kiranpal (brother-in-law). The investigating official stated that the deceased father alleged that his daughter called up in the morning yesterday and told him that her in-laws were harassing and beating her for dowry. He also alleged that they were also demanding a motorcycle and gold chain. The official said after going through the details and proper investigation, the case of dowry death had been registered against the accused. However, a post-mortem report is still awaited, investigating official said. A 22-year-old newly married woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her house in Bishanpura village yesterday. The police stated that the victim, Rani, went upstairs for household work. Her sister-in-law Shiksha also went upstairs after completing her work. She called Rani many times, but she did not answer her. In the meantime, Shiksha went to Rani’s room and found Rani was hanging from the ceiling fan. Dera Bassi: The police booked one person for abducting a minor girl from Dera Bassi. The accused has been identified as Niti hailing from UP presently living in Dera Bassi as a tenant. The accused was still absconding. The complainant, Amrit Pal, father of the minor girl, alleged that the accused mislead his daughter for marriage and took her away from home. A case of abduction was registered against the accused, the police said.
Woman found dead
Lalru: A 35-year-old woman was found dead in a well near a gurdwara at Lalru yesterday. The deceased was identified as Sharbari. The police stated that the deceased was working in the gurdwara. While she was pulling water from the well, she slipped and fell down in the well. The police has initiated inquest proceedings regarding the case. |

Sub-inspector injured in mishap dies
Chandigarh, December 18 According to the police, Mohinder Singh received critical injuries after his scooter that he was riding was hit by a car (CH03 Q5234) near the Sectors 44-45 traffic lights on December 16. He was admitted to Ivy Hospital in Mohali where he died. Subhash Chand, a resident of Sector 20B, reported someone had stolen a gold jewellery set and earrings, 25 wristwatches, ATM card and Rs 37,000 from his home. In another incident, Sudarshan Singh of Sector 15 lodged a complaint with the police alleging some one has stolen Rs 20,000 from his shop in the same sector last night. Chandigarh, December 18 The police said the victim, Deepak, in his twenties, was suffering from acute tuberculosis. His mother, Sonbery, reported to the police that Deepak had tried to kill himself by cutting his throat vein. He has been admitted to the PGI. |

Mohali, December 18 He was identified after his family members came looking for him at the Phase VI civil hospital. A police official said the victim was referred to the GMCH, Sector 32, after he was admitted to the Phase VI civil hospital here. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. Double delight for Suraj
Chandigarh, December 18 In the boys’ U-18 singles’ final, Suraj Beniwal, Haryana, a CLTA trainee, defeated Atul Sri Patel, Uttar Pradesh, another CLTA trainee, 7-5, 6-4, while in the boys’ U-14, Sachin Kumar, CLTA, beat Jajbir Singh, Punjab, 6-2, 6-3. The CLTA trainees dominated in the AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament, as they lifted four out of five events title. In the doubles’ event, Beniwal partnering with his singles’ final opponent Atul, Uttar Pradesh, lifted the title by defeating top seed Garry S Amor and Sonam Phuntzok 4-1, 4-0. In the girls’ under-14 event, it turned out to be a disappointing day for top seed Charvi Saxsena, a CLTA trainee, who was defeated by another CLTA trainee and fourth seeded player Nikita Bishnoi in a marathon match, which lasted for about three hours. After losing the first set 3-6 and down in the second set, she bounced back to win the second set by 7-5. In the third and final set, Nikita did not allow Charvi any chance to come back in the game and broke her serve thrice to win the set and match by 6-1. However, in the girls’ U-18 final, it was all Punjab girls where Jaspreet Kaur upset Gundeep Kaur 7-6 (1), 6-1. Chandigarh, December 18 Riding on a fine performance by Uday, who scored three goals, St Kabir outclassed Mount Carmel, Sector 47, by 7-0 in the Pool A fixture. In a one-sided match, Manveer put St Kabir School into the lead with a goal in the 14th minute. After gaining the lead, St Kabir did not look back. Star striker Uday then booted home two goals in the 15th and 16th minute to make it 3-0 for the winners. He went on to add another goal in the 40th minute. Arnav and Tipu swelled the winners’ tally. In the Pool B, St John’s School outclassed Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, in all departments of the game, as they raced to a comfortable 9-0 victory. Punia takes slender lead
Chandigarh, December 18 Barely one stroke behind Punia at 82 is Kamaljit Sangha, an NRI from the USA. However, Kamaljit led the field in the nett division with a score of 68. He was three strokes ahead of Karampal Cheema, also from the USA, in the net scores of the 0-14 handicap section. The three-day mega NRI event got under way after Jeev Milkha Singh performed the ceremonial tee off. In the 15-24 handicap category, Sarabjit Sidhu from Malaysia carded an 11 over gross card of 83 to be two strokes ahead of Karamjit Singh Brar from Singapore. However, the roles were reversed in the net section with Brar returning a card of 63, one stroke better than Sarabjit Singh Sidhu. Sarabjit Sidhu hit the ball to a distance of 270 yards to win the longest drive title for the day with Charanjit Singh of Malaysia being nearest to the pin hitting the ball to 9.2 in from the pin. According to the organising committee general secretary, the 113 NRIs and the 40 invitees will now shift to the SEPTA course in Chandi Mandir for the second round of the Chandigarh Golfing Tour which gets under way at 9 am with a gunshot start on Saturday.
