As cadets increase, IMA seeks more land
Dehradun, December 11 At a press briefing held at the IMA, Commandant Lt Gen Rajinder Singh Sujlana said that the number of vacancies has increased from 1,650 to 2,065 from the past two terms at the academy. “At present, we have 1,716 cadets in our institution and, with the number rising, we obviously need more space. One more ground, a large shooting range, an all-weather swimming pool and training stand have to be made here,” said the Commandant. Lt General Sujlana said, “We have more number of cadets in the IMA than National Defence Academy (NDA). The NDA has more land as compared to us and less number of cadets.” Sujlana said that the IMA requires land, but not at the cost of making villagers or others residing nearby homeless. He said that he had recently met Kamal Nath, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, to discuss about building an underpass. “We know it creates hassles for the general public, when due to the IMA’s programme, traffic is diverted from the road in front of the institute. “Secondly, due to security reasons we want that an underpass be built here,” the Commandant added. Throwing light on cyber training, Sujlana said that 15 e-classrooms have been made and more would be added in the future. “Efforts are on to provide every cadet with personal computers. Final-term cadets will be provided with the PCs on a priority basis,” he said. Elaborating on the security arrangements, he said that security has been enhanced and four closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed at vital points of the IMA premises. Snifter dogs and other important security measures have been taken that cannot be disclosed for security reasons. Meanwhile, for the first time, a remembrance ceremony was held today in the memory of 802 martyrs of the IMA. The next of kin of four martyrs were given special mementos during the ceremony. The stage is set for the passing-out parade (POP) tomorrow. In total, 536 gentlemen cadets will pass out during the ceremony. Out of these, 18 gentlemen cadets are from friendly neighbouring countries including six from Bhutan, four from Sri Lanka, two each from Maldives, Kazakhstan and Nepal and one each from Tajikistan and Mauritius. |

Need to launch sensitisation drive: Commandant
Dehradun, December 11 This comes at the time when the academy prepares for autumn term passing-out parade with cadets from northern states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana yet again registering an overwhelming presence. Calling it as an issue of national concern, Lt Gen Rajinder Singh Sujlana, Commandant, IMA, said the falling number of GCs from southern states was a matter of concern and there was a need to address this issue. There is lack of awareness among people not only in southern states, but also in some parts of Uttarakhand itself, where this institution is situated. The lack of publicity is the other factor and the country would have to look at this facet as well. The commandant mentioned that he had written to the Chief of Army Staff in this regard. He added that it was must to reach out to the people of southern states in this regard. Likewise the trend of dominance of north India states continued at IMA even the present passing out parade with a large number of cadets coming from northern states. As many as 87 cadets, the highest are from UP followed by Uttarakhand that stands second with 48 cadets. Haryana (46) has the third largest number of cadets in the academy. Other states mostly comprising the northern ones also had good participation compared to the southern states, Maharashtra (39), Bihar (32), Delhi (27), Punjab (23) and Himachal Pradesh (23).” |
