Ambala, December 5 Principal of DAV College Jasmer Nain welcomed the chief guest. Mittal said DAV Institutions were playing an important role in the field of education. He said DAV had become the symbol of the quality education. While appreciating the function of DAV Public School, he said the school had maintained goodwill in the region. School principal Reena Nagrath briefed the achievement of the school and informed that the students had secured high positions in academic as well as in other cultural activities. Jewellery, cash stolen from car
Fatehgarh Sahib, December 5 In her complaint, Vandana Prashar said windowpanes of her car were broken and thieves had decamped with a bag containing gold, diamond jewellery and other important documents, including driving license, credit cards and cash. Vandana said after attending a wedding late last night she removed her jewellery and kept it in her bag, which she forgot in the car. Next morning she found the bag missing from the car. A case has been registered in this connection. |

One booked for impersonation
Fatehgarh Sahib, December 5 The accused has been identified as Gurprit, a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh. He was booked on the complaint of one Kapildev Yadav of Gurumukh Singh Colony at Mandi Gobindgarh. A case under Sections 419 and 384 of the IPC has been registered against him. Fatehgarh Sahib SSP Dr Kaustubh Sharma said the accused, posing as a lensman, threatened some persons, including the complainant and demanded money from them. The police is investigating the matter. |

Documentary on drug abuse screened
Fatehgarh Sahib, December 5 Fatehgarh Sahib SSP, Dr Kaustubh Sharma, doctors and staff from Civil Hospital, Fatehgarh Sahib, were present on the occasion, besides Bassi Pathana DSP Rajwinder Singh, Dr Maninder Kaur Bajwa from school health services and psychiatrist Dr Preetjot Kaur. Dr Maninder Kaur gave information about tobacco addiction and its effects. Dr Preetjot Kaur elaborated on the types of drugs, its consequences and factors responsible for the addiction. She also suggested the dos and don’ts to prevent drug addiction. Dr Kaustubh Sharma stressed on the role of teachers in helping the students to overcome drug abuse. He also emphasised that the students indulging in drugs should be identified well in time, counselled and referred for proper treatment and rehabilitation. DSP Rajwinder Singh elaborated on the punishments under the NDPS Act, 1985. A documentary on drug abuse and awareness, “Search for life”, was also screened in the seminar. |

Pt Yashpal honoured with Sangeet Ratan Award
Patiala, December 5 The award was sponsored by Bibi Jasbir Kaur Khalsa, chairperson, Sri Guru Gian Parkash Foundation, New Delhi. Classical music and Punjabi Music tradition Pt Yashpal started performing from the age of 11 from Harwallabh Sangeet Sammelan. An artist of All-India Radio Pt Yashpal has been honoured with many prestigious awards like Dedicated Educationist, Sangeet Sumeru, Sangeet Shiromani, State Award by Punjab government and Punjab Sangeet Natak Academy Award. Dr Jaspal said training and presentation of classical music was needed for promotion of different music streams of Punjab. Meanwhile, Singh Bandhu Surinder Singh was also awarded with Gurmat Sangeet Senior Fellowship for the year 2009-10. On the last day of the festival, the first presentation was given by Arun Kumar Jha, a pakhawaj player, from music department of Punjabi University. Shaminder Pal Singh and his disciple Satwinder Pal Singh performed in raag vaarspati and raag mishar pahari. |
Woman commits suicide
Chandigarh, December 5 The deceased has been identified as Shalu. Husband of the victim Amit, who works at a petrol pump, said after having an altercation with his wife, he left the house. On his return, he found the main door locked from inside. After entering the house from back door, he found his wife hanging from a ceiling fan. He then took her to the PGI where she was declared dead. Shalu is survived by her husband and a two-and-a-half year baby. DSP South JS Khaira said a case would be registered after a post-mortem, which would be conducted after the arrival of Shalu’s parents.

The police has arrested one person, identified as Omi, from government tubewell, Sector 25, with 6 gm of smack on Friday. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered. |

Teenager kills beggar
Chandigarh, December 5 The incident came to light when a police party patrolling in the area during the late night hours arrested the accused from the spot, besides taking the victim, aged around 50, to Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, where he was declared brought dead. A case has been registered against the accused, who has been identified as Krishan alias Patra. Mauli Jagran police chowki in charge Malkiat Singh said the victim was sleeping near house No 2147 when the accused, who drove a vegetable rehri in the Sector 26 vegetable market, tried to sexually assault him. The victim shocked over the behaviour of Patra pushed him aside. However, the accused infuriated over this started hitting the victim. The victim picked a brick and started hitting the accused, however, Patra who was heavily drunk got hold of the brick and started hitting the victim on his head, injuring him seriously. Malkiat said the main motive of the accused was to sexually assault the victim and ruled out the motive of looting, as only Rs 5 were found in the possession of the victim. Even though a large number of people had gathered at the site of the incident, no one cared to inform the police or save the beggar, who could not be identified, he added. Vehicles stolen
Ravinder Pal Singh of Sector 21 has reported to the police alleging that his Kinetic Honda scooter (CH-03-A-2210), which was parked in front of his residence, was stolen on November 7. In another incident, Subhash Chand of Sector 38 West, reported to the police alleging that someone had stolen his Maruti car (CH-01-D-0044), which was parked in front of his residence, on December 3 night. Two separate cases of theft have been registered.

Blue Star club win T20 series
Panchkula, December 5 Earlier, Blue Star Cricket Club had won the two one-day encounters and split the two T-20 games by winning one and losing one. The overall four match series was won by Blue Star Cricket Club with a margin of 3-1. Blue Star skipper Amit Uniyal won the toss and elected to bat first. They were soon on the back foot when their opener Ishan Malhotra was bowled by M Bukhari on the first ball of the match. One drop Harpreet Sunny was also removed by Bukhari, who had him snapped by wicket keeper Allema for zero. Then the stand of 87 runs for the fifth wicket between Gaurav Gupta 49 not out and Amit Uniyal 54 saw the team reach a total of 149 for 6 in 20 overs. Amit Uniyal hit 6x4s and 3x6s in his knock of 54 of 34 balls, while Gaurav Gupta remained unbeaten on 49 of 55 balls with the help of 3x4s and 1x6.
