Woman ends life:
Depressed for her inability to conceive, a migrant woman, Gudia (35), reportedly ended her life by consuming poison at her house on Bhagu road here on Thursday. Police sources said she was married to one Maya Parsad about five years ago but could not conceive. Her husband’s frequent demands for a child depressed her. Irked by frequent quarrels on the issue, she committed suicide.

CHANDIGARH
MLA backs N-plant plea: Qila Raipur MLA Jassi Khangura on Wednesday, in a letter, urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to consider Punjab’s plea for a nuclear power plant for the state, as it was faced with a severe power crisis. Khangura assured the PM that most of the Punjabis, including some MPs of the Akali Dal, were in favour of the deal and wanted to support it. Khangura urged the PM to constitute a panel that will study the issue of providing nuclear power to the people of Punjab.

Services extended: The Punjab State AIDS Control Society has extended services of outreach workers (ORW) for two more months on the instructions of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), New Delhi. It was necessitated because of delay in the signing of an agreement between the Global Fund and Infrastructure Leasing and Financial Services (IL&FS). It has been decided by the NACO, New Delhi, to continue the funding of this scheme under the NACO budget.

Virasat Bhawan inaugurated:
Fazilka MLA Surjit Kumar Jyani inaugurated the Virasat Bhawan at the local Government Senior Secondary School for Boys today to mark the 84th anniversary of the school. Some old trophies and achievements of pre-partition days have been displayed in the building.

Rs 11,000 looted from petrol station:
Three motorcycle-borne youths robbed Balwant Filling Station, Shergarh, located on the periphery of the town of Rs 11,000 and two mobile phones early this morning. According to police sources, three motorbike riders, aged around 21 years, came to Balwant Filling Station at about 1.30 am and after getting petrol of Rs 50 filled in the motorbike snatched Rs 11,000 and two mobile phone sets from employees Umesh Sharma and Dinesh Kumar showing some gun- like instrument. After robbing the petrol station, they fled. The Sadar police has registered a case under sections 382 of the IPC in this connection.

“Love Italy”, a lounge and restaurant has opened at Regent Park Hotel here. The restaurant has introduced Italian cuisine where all dishes will be cooked in extra virgin olive oil. All items on the menu will be prepared with imported Italian herbs and cheese. The restaurant has a lounge area, cubicles for meal and a lounge bar.

Body found: The police recovered the body of Narender of Kheri Damkan village from the fields of Mool Chand on Wednesday. The deceased had been shot in the chest. The body was handed over to the family after a postmortem. A case has been registered. Narender’s father Sri Krishan said his son had gone in a car with Sarwar and Kala of the same village on Tuesday evening, but did not return. School students informed the police about the body.

Sanitation drive
: The Joint Commissioner (Administration) of the Municipal Corporation along with the Joint Commissioner (Works), health officer and other officers on Thursday visited ward number 32 to take stock of sanitation and sewerage problems in the area. The Joint Commissioner (Administration) gave instruction to the officers concerned to get the identified works done and also to prepare an estimate of the major works so that the same could be submitted to the commissioner for approval.

Udhampur
Ambulance for Old Age Home:
Minister of Medical Education, Technical Education, Youth Services and Sports RS Chib announced to provide an ambulance for inmates of the Jagriti Old Age Home. He asked Udhampur DC Ajay Kahjuria to ensure early provision of the ambulance. During his visit to the Jagriti Old Age Home on Wednesday, the minister enquired about the well-being of the inmates.

Awareness camp held: J&K SCs/STs, BC Development Corporation Limited on Thursday organised an awareness camp at Town Hall here about various welfare programmes and activities being carried out for the people belonging to these categories. Managing Director of the Corporation Raj Kumar called upon the members of these categories to set up their own income generating units for which loans were being provided on easy terms.
