Farmers seek hike in cane prices
For Rs 280 per quintal

Akhila Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 19
With sugarcane stems in hands, thousands of farmers stormed into the national Capital today demanding rollback in new sugarcane pricing policy.

Bringing key areas of the city to a halt, the farmers threatened to curtail the supply of basic commodities in Delhi if their demands were not met.

They said the government had increased the price of sugar to more than Rs 40 per kg, while the price of sugarcane was as low as Rs 130 per quintal. They demanded the price of sugarcane be fixed at Rs 280 per quintal.

The farmers, many of whom have been camping in the city for the last three days, were planning to gherao the Parliament led by Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) leader Ajit Singh.

Reminding that 40 per cent of the country’s sugarcane came from UP, Ajit Singh threatened the government of continuing the agitation till the prices of sugarcane were increased. He asked why the government was rushing to take decision about sugarcane prices when the winter session was going to begin soon.

“Farmers are agitated as the government increased the prices of sugar without the consultation of their representatives or state governments,” he said.

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav also reached the rally with colleague Amar Singh. He said the problems of farmers were not the UPA government’s priority. He alleged that rice was being imported when farmers here were ready to sell it at much cheaper rates.

Attacking Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, RLD leader Anuradha Chowdhary said he was putting people of Uttar Pradesh at a disadvantage so that farmers in Maharashtra could have sole control on sugarcane market.

After the House was adjourned, leaders from other opposition parties too joined the farmers to support their demands.

Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley alleged the UPA government was trying to appease sugar mill owners. He expressed confidence the Rajya Sabha would not pass the bill on new sugarcane price policy.

Threatening the government of dire consequences, the farmers expressed their helplessness too. “We spend at least Rs 130 to produce one quintal sugarcane. Then how does the government expect us to sell it at the same price,” said Ramesh Yadav, a farmer.

Most farmers participating in the rally were from western Uttar Pradesh. “Farmers sweat to produce crops on which the country survives. And we are being pushed to commit suicide,” said Ram Meher Singh from Baghpat. He added, “If the prices are not increased, I would burn my crop than sell it at this price.”

However, some farmers are prepared for a longer stay. “I have my bedding with me and I am not going back unless our demands are met,” said a farmer sitting on the top of a bus.

Other leaders who addressed the farmers included CPI’s D. Raja, All India Trade Union Centre’s (AITUC) Gurudas Dasgupta and Janata Dal United’s (JDU) Sharad Yadav.

While returning to their houses, the farmers stopped outside Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar’s residence and demonstrated there.

The traffic was standstill at Rajghat as the buses and other vehicles by which farmers had come to the Capital were parked on both sides of roads making vehicular movement slow.

From bandhini chunaris at Rajasthan Pavilion, leather goods at Bengal Pavilion, Coconut oil at Kerela to papads, achars and Dhokla at Gujrat Pavilion — everything was selling like hotcakes at the India International Trade Fair-2009 today which opened its gates for the first day for the common people. As many as 70,000 people thronged the Pragati Maidan lawns.

“Thanks to the weather, it is just a perfect day at the fair. It is one of its kind events in Delhi and it is fun being here with friends,” said Mano, a Tibetan student who visited the fair.

While Rajasthan Pavilion had artists performing dances and puppetry shows outside the pavilion, dancers at Karnataka Pavilion managed to pull huge crowds.

Apart from shopping and getting a feel of the fair, visitors made sure to visit the food courts too.

Food court ‘Bharat ka Khana’ saw the maximum number of foodies. From North India’s rajma chawal to South’s malasa dosa, almost everything on the menu found takers.

“We have been regular to the fair for more than 10 years now. I look forward to purchase Pashmina shawls, jewellery from west Bengal Pavilion and other accessories from Rajasthan Pavillion,” said a visitor.

Not just families and youngsters, the first day also saw considerable number of schoolchildren, who looked jubilant.

Being the first day many feared bad traffic owing. However, the traffic was pretty fluid today. Even the well-regulated traffic could not help the slow movement, but it ensured that the traffic did not collapse. Even the parking lots did not face any hiccups.

The relaxed traffic conditions can also be attributed to the fact that more and more people resorted to the Delhi Metro today. With the Metro line extended till Noida, more passenger traffic was registered by the Metro this year.

New Delhi, November 19
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has planned to phase out horse-drawn carriages called tongas, as the civic body unveiled a rehabilitation policy for their owners today.

The tongas are still in use in the walled city of Delhi. Under the policy, which got the MCD standing committee nod today, over 230 tongawaalas would be given an alternative employment and the carriages would be banned, a move the MCD says would help ease traffic woes and prevent cruelty to animals.

Tongas, driven by horses, mules or ponies, are used for ferrying passengers and carrying load in the Sadar Bazar and Chandni Chowk areas. Also, 170 tongawaalas, holding licences, would be provided with 6 ft/4 ft open to sky tehbazari (vending) sites.

The benefit of the scheme is being extended to about three family members of those, having more than one licence.

According to provisions, 37 tongawaalas would get financial assistance for purchase for CNG goods carriages. They would be given Rs 53,000 or one-third of the total cost of the vehicle, said former standing committee chairman Vijender Gupta. For 26 unlicensed vendors, Rs 40,000 or one-fourth of the total cost of vehicle would be given, he added.
