22 SRTC employees hurt in cane-charge Jammu, November 12 As the prohibitory orders were already in place near the Civil Secretariat area, the police arrested 48 protesting SRTC employees and lodged them in city police station. Nineteen employees, who suffered minor injuries, were discharged from hospital after medication, whereas the condition of three employees was stated to be critical. “One of the critically injured is struggling for life, as a tear gas shell hit him and exploded in his face,” said Shakeel Ahmed Kuchay, chairman of the SRTC Workers Union, said. “The arrested employees are also wounded and they called us for help. But the police did not allow us to go and meet them,” said Muneer Ahmed, a spokesman for the union. The employees had threatened to gherao the Civil Secretariat for the implementation of the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission and the release of their pending salaries for the past seven months. Elaborate security arrangements were in place as a large number of police personnel were deployed on roads leading to the Civil Secretariat to foil any attempt. However, the employees in small groups managed to reach Shalamar Chowk outside the secretariat. As the employees started to gather near the secretariat, the police resorted to cane-charge and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse them. Twenty-two employees were injured in the police action. The employees allege that the police action was unprovoked and they were holding a peaceful protest. Ashok Mehra, president of the union, said, “The police also cane-charged employees outside our office premises at Bikram Chowk.” The union spokesman said they would continue with their agitation as they had come to Jammu from Srinagar to get justice. “We are here to get justice. We would go to any extent to get it,” Kuchay said. Meanwhile, the agitating employees said the next course of action would be decided at the meeting of the command council of the union. Srinagar: The police used force to disperse protesting SRTC employees here on Thursday.The employees took out a protest rally through Lal Chowk and the police soon resorted to a cane-charge to disperse them. SRTC driver Bashir Ahmad said many of his colleagues and their families were starving, but the government had been callous and insensitive towards them. |
Create conducive atmosphere for talks, Mirwaiz asks govt Jammu, November 12 He reiterated his demands of release of all political prisoners, revocation of draconian laws like the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA), Distributed Area Act, Public Safety Act (PSA) and gradual demilitarisation. The Moderate Hurriyat leader also demanded that human rights violation should be stopped in state and some effective steps should be taken for the economic integration of the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state. “These steps would revive confidence of the people,” he said and stressed on the need of allowing people of both sides of Kashmir to move freely on both sides of border. He demanded that instead of permit, the state subject should be considered as document for travelling both sides of the border. Reiterating commitment of the Hurriyat to support the dialogue process, the Mirwaiz observed that those opposing talks were not well-wishers of the people of the state. He called upon all sections of society to contribute in the lasting solution of the Kashmir problem. Seeking to dispel the misconception among Hindus, the Mirwaiz reiterated his resolve to take all region and religious into confidence while arriving at solution of the Kashmir issue. After addressing a gathering at the Jama Masjid, the Mirwaiz lead a procession, which passed through different areas of Bhaderwah peacefully and later culminated at the graveyard. |
Women sweep varsity poll Jammu, November 12 Rameshwari Slathia from Business School was elected secretary of the executive body. Joint secretaries of the committee include Indu Bagal from the Department of Physics and Electronics, Ankita Gupta from the Department of Library and Information Science, Meenakshi Anand from the Department of Home Science. The newly elected team was felicitated by chairman of the campus cultural committee, Prof GM Bhat, Dean Students Welfare, JS Tara and assistant dean (Cultural Affairs) Vijay Atri. “We are happy that we have started a fresh chapter and were elected unopposed.We are committed to promote cultural activities and come up to the expectations of the students,” said newly elected secretary Rameshwari. “We have started working for the arrangements of Display Your Talent-the annual mega cultural event of the varsity,” they said and added that competitions would be held in different categories, including fine arts, poster-making, sketching, cartooning, clay-modeling, rangoli, flower arrangement, elocution, debate, essay writing, quiz, short story writing and poetry recitation. SI hurt in firing by militants Srinagar, November 12 Jammu: The security forces apprehended two overground workers (OGWs) from Doda and Reasi districts on Thursday. A joint team of Rashtriya Rifles and the police today conducted a raid in the Katchdhar area of Doda and apprehended Bashir Ahmed of Katchdhar. The arrested youth was providing logistic support for terrorist activities in the belt. In another incident, the security forces busted a militant hideout in the Mahore area of Reasi district and seized some arms and ammunition. Abdul Hamid, an OGW of militants, was arrested during the operation. |
Protest at post office Jammu, November 12 “We waited for almost more than half an hour, but nobody turned up. We were told that both of them had gone for lunch. However, when no body paid any heed to us we raised hue and cry,” a customer said. He said after the authorities saw that the people were getting angry they arranged two officers to man the counters and book the speed posts. |
Charge sheet against woman employee Tribune News Service Jammu, November 12 On September 23, assistant complier Shama Bakshi posted at the GP Fund Office was caught red-handed by SVO sleuths while she was accepting bribe of Rs 5,000 from a complainant Swarna Devi — a widow. The charge sheet was produced today in the court of Special Judge Anti-Corruption, Jammu. The employee had demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 for processing the GP Fund refund case of the widow, a class-IV employee. Swarna Devi, a nurse, posted at the Government SMGS Hospital here had lodged a complaint with the SVO, stating that GP Fund refund case of her deceased husband was pending in the District Fund Office. She had also stated that she went a number of times to the office and requested Bakshi to settle the case, but she demanded gratification. In the course of investigation, SVO officials laid a trap in the GP Fund Office, nabbing the employee while accepting the bribe. The tainted money was recovered from her possession in presence of independent witnesses. After receiving sanction for prosecution from the competent authority the charge sheet was produced in the court today. However, the accused was already on bail under the court orders. The next date of hearing has been fixed on December 3. |

JCCB chairman manhandled, 2 arrested Jammu, November 12 Official sources said this morning PDP leader Tariq along with his supporters arrived at the Bahu Plaza complex housing the JCCB head office where he broke open the locks of the chairman’s chamber. Sources said Tariq forcibly occupied the chair and when Mohinder Singh arrived at the office the former chairman and his supporters allegedly manhandled the present chairman (Mohinder). Tariq claimed support of nine out of 14 members of the board of directors. However, chairman Mohinder Singh called up the police, which reached the office and tried to sort out the matter. Trikuta Nagar police station SHO Vijay Singh Choudhary said two persons who manhandled the chairman had been arrested and a case under Sections 451 and 323, RPC, stand registered against them. In case of a dispute, rules under the Cooperatives Act say that the board of directors had to issue a notice and within a week’s time a notification had to be issued for filing objections. But in this case former chairman didn’t go by the rules, the SHO said, adding that he forced his entry into the chairman’s office and manhandled the chairman. Gujjars told not to vacate land Jammu, November 12 Interacting with 25 evicted Gujjar families, who had been forcibly dispossessed from the forest land adjoining Devak Bridge, near Vijaypur, leaders of different organisations impressed upon all heads of nomads’ deras not to succumb to any pressure to leave their land. The leaders urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and restore the land in favour of the displaced Gujjar families. “In the state more than 95 per cent of nomadic Gujjars are landless, without any shelter and are denied dwelling rights on forest land which they are using as traditional inhabitants for centuries,” Javaid Rahi, national secretary of the Tribal Research and
Cultural Foundation, a premier organisation of Gujjars, said. Rahi said implementation of the Forest Right Act could only redress the “historical injustice” committed against the Gujjars, who are the major dwellers and conservators of forests. “Due to the presence of Article 370, this Act cannot be extended directly to the state without a legislation and impressed upon the state government to issue an SRO immediately in this regard so as to provide rights on forests to dwelling communities over the land and other resources, denied to them over decades,” Javaid Rahi said. Mohammad Anwar Chowdhary, state president of the Gujjars United Front, said “The Gujjars have been demanding similar rights on Forests, constitutionally been made available to other scheduled tribe communities in Indian states after enactment of the Forest Rights Act 2006.” |

Dates of tender notice create confusion Jammu, November 12 Two advertisements inviting tenders for execution of six projects in Kathua district by the office of the executive engineer, PWD (R&B), Kathua division has given the last date for receipt of the applications as November 9. The tenders are invited for the construction of a medical sub-centre at Khokhyal at an estimated cost of Rs 12.85 lakh for which the date of issue of tender documents have been fixed as November 7 and the last date and time of the receipt of application has been fixed as November 9. Similar is the case with the construction of medical sub-centre at Badala for which the last date has again been fixed as November 9. Similar is the situation with four other projects for which tenders have been called by the office of the executive engineer, PWD (R&B), Kathua division, though the date of publication of the notice is November 12, the date of issuance of application is shown as November 7 and the last date for receipt of the same is November 9. Executive engineer, PWD (R&B), Kathua division, SP Sharma said “The discrepancy has been brought into my notice and I have extended the last date by 10 days.” He said the mistake had been done by the state Information Department as his office had issued the advertisement at proper time, but the Information Department took more time to release the advertisement, that resulted into confusion. |

Panun Kashmir concerned over political developments Jammu, November 12 According to a statement issued here, leaders of the Panun Kashmir said political developments were aimed at hastening the process of “some settlement” of the Kashmir issue. They further said the statements emanating from the political figures of the state and the Centre was pointing towards some kind of secret understanding having been entered with secessionist, semi-secessionist elements and Pakistan. They said the recent statement of the Chief Minister that passports would be issued to the members of the Hurriyat to visit Pakistan was a serious development. |
