Bandh paralyses normal life
City shuts down amid fear of violence

Life came to a standstill today as the city witnessed a complete bandh following a call given by various radical Sikh organisations to press for justice for the victims of the 1984 riots.

Cops avert ugly clash
Tension gripped the Old Sabzi Mandi and Arya Mohalla area due to a local leader and his supporters who tried to exploit the situation to gain political mileage. The bandh, which was largely peaceful, took an ugly turn when 15 to 20 youths aged between 18 and 20 years led by a local level leader began raising slogans against the protesters.

The Punjab bandh called by radical Sikh organisations today disrupted the entire rail traffic in the region with a number of trains, originating from Amritsar and passing through Ludhiana, cancelled, some others terminated at intermediate stations and many more running behind schedule by five to eight hours.

Traders incur huge losses
Ludhiana, November 3
Chaura Bazar wears a deserted look during the bandh in Ludhiana. Traders suffered losses worth crores of rupees due to the Punjab bandh called by radical Sikh organizations today. Almost all stores in the city and its vicinity remained closed for "safety reasons". Not only shops but other businesses including theatres, hotels and restaurants also suffered huge losses in the absence of customers.

Rural commuters left high and dry

Hundreds of commuters bore the brunt of the bandh called by Sikh organizations, which was duly supported by private bus operators who refused to ply their buses on routes catering to villagers residing in the city’s periphery.Residents of several villages were left stranded as 400 mini buses and 250 regular buses, known as the lifeline of rural areas, failed to operate their scheduled routes.

MC floats tenders for new streetlights
Even though uprooted ones have still to be replaced
Ludhiana, November 3
While the municipal corporation’s lights branch is ready to begin work on street lighting costing over Rs 1 crore in various wards of the city following the nod from the MC’s finance & contracts committee (F&CC), streetlights that were displaced after fancy lights were installed are still missing.

Ludhiana, November 3
Following the call of Punjab bandh given by various radical Sikh organisations, city colleges and government schools today witnessed thin attendance even as private schools remained closed. Scant attendance forced numerous educational institutions to send their students back home.

PAU campus unfazed by Punjab bandh

While outdoor life in the city was disrupted today in the wake of Punjab bandh following the call given by various radical Sikh organisations, the Punjab Agriculture University (PAU) campus wore a cheerful look.

‘84 riots: Mixed response to bandh call
Mandi Ahmedgarh, November 2
The bandh call given by the Panthic organisations evoked a mixed response in Mandi Ahmedgarh here today. Commercial establishments, including liquor vends and shops, remained closed for about three to four hours in the morning, but by noon a large number of them started functioning normally.

Clerical work weighs down teachers
Mandi Gobindgarh, November 3
The teachers in government schools are an overburdened lot with non-teaching workload for which no training is imparted to them. Though the schools in the state are already facing shortage of staff, they are asked to make arrangement for mid-day meal of the students and maintain a record of daily consumption and balance. In case any deficiency is found in its storing or balance, teachers have to face the wrath of the department. Many teams of experienced teachers have been formed to check the record during school hours at the cost of studies.

3 missing children return home

Three children, who were reported to have gone missing yesterday, returned home this morning.Railway protection force (RPF) officers brought them back home from Saharanpur.

NGO comes out in support of cadaver organ donation

Contrary to 100 to 150 patients suffering from kidney failure per million in India, the donation rate of kidney is even less than .08 per cent which points towards the lack of sensitisation among people towards the cause of voluntary organ donation in brain dead patients.

Thousands left homeless as unworthy allotted houses

While sky is the only shelter for lakhs of homeless families living in the border state, thousands of houses, once allotted to the poorest among poor under the Indira Awas Yojna are lying deserted.People smell a rat in its construction and subsequent allotment to those favoured by political bigwigs during successive governments.

HC orders cleaning of Rasulpur drain
Jagraon, November 3
The Universal Human Right organisation (UHRO) achieved a victory after got a direction passed by the Punjab and Haryana High Court for the irrigation department to get the drain passing through Rasulpur and other villages cleaned within a month. Judge Ashutosh Mohanta has warned that appropriate action would be taken against people if they refuse to comply with the orders.

Residents demand trauma centre
Khamano, November 3
A few residents of the area in a letter to the Fatehgarh Sahib deputy commissioner has demanded setting up of a trauma center in the local civil hospital for saving precious lives. They also pointed out that Khamano is situated on the NH 95 Chandigarh-Ludhiana Highway and happens to be an accident-prone area.

INTUC members meet Manish Tewari

The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) today met Manish Tewari, MP, to apprise of the "miserable" conditions of workers, employees in the state. The members of the trade union said the employees were being victimised under the SAD-BJP regime.

Plant pathologists honoured

Dr TS Thind, senior plant pathologist, working in the department of plant pathology in the PAU and research fellows Ratinderbir Kaur and Sanjay Goswami have been awarded PP Singhal Memorial Pesticides India Award for the year 2009 by the Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology.

1 killed, 3 hurt in accidents
Samrala, November 3
A resident of Rajgarh village in Patiala got killed in an accident late last night near here. The deceased has been identified as Harjinder Singh who was travelling on a tractor with his cousin when a speeding truck hit the tractor.

Haryana resident held with drugs
Khanna, November 3
The police today arrested one person with synthetic drugs from Machhiwara. The accused has been identified as Mohammad Sameen, a Haryana resident. About 570 gm of drugs was recovered from his possession. Police officials said the accused had made the drug by using various kinds of medicines and other illegal substances. A case in this connection has been registered. The police is investigating.

Drunk truck driver sends police into tizzy

A reckless truck driver created havoc on the Ferozepur road last night and damaged numerous vehicles, including that of a police, which tired to stop it.The incident took place at around 11. 30pm when a truck belonging to a Moga-based goods courier company hit the vehicle of a couple, who were returning home after attending a marriage, near Baddowal.

The Khalsa College for Women team that won a bronze medal in the PU Kabaddi Championship. Khalsa College girls bring laurels

The kabaddi team of Khalsa College for Women, Sidhwan Khurd, brought laurels to the college in the Punjab University Inter-College Championship held recently at the university in Chandigarh.A total of 10 colleges from various zones participated in the tournament. The college’s kabaddi team got success in striking a bronze.

The management committee of Guru Har Gobind Khalsa (GGHK) Senior Secondary, Bahadurgarh, felicitated members of hockey teams (boys and girls) which bagged the third position in the state-level school games concluded at Jarkhar stadium recently.
