Faithful dog fails to save them despite heroic efforts

In an incident reminding one of a dog’s legendary loyalty to his master, a pet yesterday tried unsuccessfully to save two tiny tots from a blazing thatched hut on the outskirts of Kaimbwala village here.

The Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) would soon start post-graduate courses in eight different disciplines related with advanced instrumentation engineering.Stating this here today, Director-General, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Prof Samir K Brahmachari said that the purpose of such programmes was to nurture talent and give an opportunity to students and young scientists develop expertise.

2 Dogra turns 150
Chandigarh, October 30
The 2nd Battalion of the Dogra Regiment, the regiment’s senior-most unit, is commemorating 150 years of its raising at its location in the Western Sector. Spread over three days, the celebrations include a Dogra mela release of a First Day Cover and other ceremonial events.

Ironically, members of the sub-committee of the garbage-processing unit, Dadumajra, raised a question mark on their own report at the meeting of general house held here today. They queried the debating of the report of the plant when the house had no power to take any action against the company.

One more tested positive for swine flu here today. With this, the total number of the confirmed swine flu cases in the city has gone up to 57.“We collected the throat and nasal swab samples of a 26-year-old woman, who is the lecturer of Linken College of Education, Sirhind, and resident of Sector 68, Mohali, yesterday and her reports came positive today,” UT nodal officer of swine flu HC Gera told TNS.

Doctors throw light on paediatric epilepsy

Last date extended

The UT administration’s department of food & supplies and consumer affairs has extended the last date for submission of ‘above poverty line’ (APL) ration card applications at the Sampark Centres up to November 20. The application forms have been made available at the centres for collecting fresh data on APL families for issuance of smart cards.

Sangita shines in folk dance

An inter-college solo dance competition was organised in PKR Jain College of Education, Ambala City, to exhibit the hidden talents of students. Around 12 colleges of the region participated in the contest. Haryana-aided schoolteachers expressed great concern over the implementation of the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission in the aided schools from September 2009, while the teachers of the government schools and other government employees got this benefit from January 2006.

Man gets life term for murder
Panchkula, October 30
A local court awarded life imprisonment to a guilty of murder here today. The guilty, Jai Bhagwan, a mason belonging to Ladwa in Kurukshetra, killed Ram Kumar (24) of Raipur Rani two years ago. A fine of Rs 50,000 was also slapped on him.

A Sector 8B resident filed a complaint with the police alleging his servant had fled after stealing cash and household articles from his house.Baldev Singh accused Amar Gurung of Nepal of decamping with cash and other household articles from his home between October 18 and 29. A case has been registered.

Mother hangs herself to death

Pushpa Gupta, a mother of two, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her Sector 47-C residence here on Thursday afternoon. The police said the victim was mentally upset and was taking treatment from a private doctor.

Man commits suicide at in-laws’ house
Panchkula, October 30Rajinder Singh (34), a resident of Sirmour in Himachal Pradesh, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Raipur Rani near here last night. Though the wife of the deceased claimed that he committed suicide, the police found no suicide note on the spot.
