Polio case reported
Mohali, October 25
After Jalandhar and Ludhiana, a confirmed polio case has been reported from a slum area in Industrial Area, Phase VIII here. The victim, Shagun, an eight-year-old girl, is presently in Bijnour, Uttar Pradesh. She is reported to have contracted P3-type virus. In Jalandhar and Ludhiana, P1-type virus had been detected.

Lack of road sense worsens traffic chaos

The lack of enforcement of basic rules by the Chandigarh traffic police including those on lane driving and right of way is resulting in large traffic jams and bottlenecks at rotaries, leading to congestion on city streets.

At an age when children are glued to TV and computer, 12-year-old Ishita Uppal has set a higher goal for herself. The Class VII student of Little Flower Convent School, Sector 14, Panchkula, is all set for a 21-day all-India voyage to spread message against female foeticide. In fact, the girl had chosen the birthday of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on November 19 to begin her “national mission against female foeticide”. The journey, which would take her to major parts of India, would culminate at Mumbai on December 9.

Punjab staff demands accepted

The Punjab State Ministerial Services Union claimed that the state government had accepted several long-pending demands of the union. The union, in a press note released recently, stated that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at a meeting with 27 representatives of the union, including state president Sukhwinder Singh and general secretary Darshan Singh Bajaj, accepted certain demands of the union.

RTI fee exemption for SC/STs sought

Govt to give Rs 40 crore to medical college
Patiala, October 25
The Punjab government has decided to give Rs 40 crore to the Government Medical College, Patiala, for strengthening its infrastructure and for the purchase of medical equipment. Punjab minister for medical education and research Tikshan Sood today said the Punjab government had started giving funds for the upgradation of the state-owned medical colleges and as part of this scheme, a sum of Rs 40 crore was being provided to the Patiala medical college where he had got reports that the institution needed funds for urgent maintenance work as also for the purchase of more medical equipment.

Cop’s son held for stealing water taps
Chandigarh, October 25
A Chandigarh police head constable’s son was caught in the act of stealing water taps from Police Lines in Sector 26. According to the cops, 24-year-old Mohit Dhiwan, son of head constable Bihar Lal and a resident of Police Colony in Sector 26, was caught red handed in the wee hours today. Head constable Jasbir Singh, a ‘munshi’ at the police lines nabbed Dhiwan with eight stolen water taps in his possession at around 2:30 am.

18-yr-old girl commits suicide
Chandigarh, October 25
An 18-year-old final year student of bachelor of engineering allegedly hanged herself to death at her Sector 42 residence here yesterday. Though the police is yet to establish the reason behind the extreme step in the absence of any suicide note, the investigators ruled out any foul play behind the death.
