Govt to give Rs 40 crore to medical college
Patiala, October 25 Sood said a sum of Rs 68 crore was being made available to the medical college at Faridkot where the need was felt for strengthening of the infrastructure. He said in the case of Patiala medical college there were reports after the gruesome fire incident in which several newborn infants were burnt to death following fire in incubator that the electrical supply and other such basic amenities needed to be improved. He said he had got a comprehensive plan prepared by his department and he had taken up the matter with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal who had agreed to make funds available for the purpose. The medical education minister said the vacant posts in the state medical colleges were also being filled up and the process of the recruitment was being set in motion shortly. Sood refused to comment on the contentious issue of the Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences at Jalandhar by saying that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had already made a detailed statement on the issue and there was no need for further clarification in this regard. Moreover, he said he was not a member of the technical committee, which had finalised the lease draft and therefore he could not comment on this issue. |

Conference on wireless networks ends
Rajpura, October 25 The two-day conference was organised by the department of electronics and communication engineering of the institute in association with George Brown College, Canada. Dr CP Ravikumar, technical director, university relations, Texas Instruments, inaugurated the conference. During his inaugural address, Dr Ravikumar spoke about the developments in the field of embedded systems and the natural progression from semi-conductors to very large scale integration (VLSI ). He noted that India had emerged as a major player and a leading market in the field. He observed that collaboration was the keyword and there was a need for collective action by the industry, the academia and the research institutes for future developments in this area. “It is a wireless world” was the theme of the keynote address by Prof Jorge Olenewa from George Brown College, Canada. He dwelt on the revolutionary developments in recent years in wireless communications and explained how this technology had changed the way of life. He also spoke about the current trends, futuristic applications and integration of technologies. |

Sufi soiree enchants audience
Patiala, October 25 The programme was organised by Mehak Cultural Forum. Sartaj, who is working as a lecturer at the Punjabi University’s music department, is known for singing his own compositions in a unique style. He enthralled the audience by singing his famous composition, “Nikki Jahi Kudi” and “Sai”. Hundreds of music lovers thronged to hear the Sufi music. Inderpal Singh, who was present among the audience, said, “I have never seen a better programme in India. Though various singers time and again perform here but Sartaj’s style and singing is really unique and reaches your heart. The lyrics and feel of his compositions has touched me deeply.” Sartaj has earlier performed in several countries and is a name to reckon within the music world. He has won gold medals at various youth festivals but his talent was widely acknowledged when he won the best Sufi singer award at the 32rd Nations Dubai International Cultural Fest in 2003 and since then there has been no looking back. |

Two booked for kidnapping cop
Rajpura, October 25 The constable and the sewadar chased the car on a bike and stopped it a few kilometres away from the barrier. The two men in the car entered a heated argument with the constable who also fired gunshots in air during scuffle with the car occupants. Constable Vipin told the car occupants to accompany him the police station. However, the accused kidnapped the constable after severely beating him up. The sewadar, however, escaped from the spot and raised an alarm. The car was found at a roadside this morning near Ambala as it had hit a tree during scuffle between the accused and the cop. Vipin is undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital, Rajpura, and a case in this connection has been registered against the accused at the Rajpura Sadar police station. The police is trying to identify the accused involved in the crime. |

Blackmailers’ gang busted, 3 held
Patiala, October 25 The modus operandi of the gang was through a girl named Vishakha of Rajpura, who masterminded the plan to blackmail people. She would develop intimacy with unknown persons, invite them to a hotel and then call her gangsters, who would demand money from the person concerned on alleged sexual exploitation of the girl. In one such case, which occurred on October 23, Vishakha developed intimacy with Sucha Singh, who hails from Azimgarh, Haryana. She invited him to a hotel and then called her gang members, who blackmailed Sucha Singh on the plea that he was exploiting Vishakha for sexual favour. They demanded Rs 2 lakh from Sucha Singh before he would be let off. He agreed to pay Rs 80,000 and paid Rs 60,000 on the same day. Meanwhile, he informed the police, who laid a trap to nab the girl and other members, including two reporters of a TV channel. As Sucha Singh was about to handover Rs 20,000 to the blackmailers, the police arrested the girl with Jaswinder and Raja, while others fled away. A case under Sections 379, 384, 385, 420, 389, 506 and 120 of the IPC has been registered against them at the Kotwali police station. The police is in search of other members who were absconding. |

Husband, in-laws get life term for murder

October 25 A fine of Rs 10,000 has also been imposed upon the family and they have to undergo imprisonment for another six months if they fail to pay the same. Sukhbir Singh and his parents Bhajan Kaur and Balbir Singh were accused of killing Amritpal Kaur -- wife of Sukhbir -- a resident of Manpur, near Sanghol. In his complaint to the police, Gurpal Singh, father of the deceased, had alleged that his daughter was married to Sukhbir around eight years ago and her in-laws were harassing her over one pretext or the other. They also used to beat her up over non-fulfilment of their demands, alleged the father. Gurpal also alleged that the body of her daughter bore marks of injury in her neck and other body parts. A complaint was lodged by the father and a case was registered against the husband and in-laws of Amritpal after an inquiry was conducted by the police. The accused were sent to jail after pronouncement of life term imprisonment. |

Banur, October 25 Prof BB Tandon, senior adviser, IBS and professor emeritus, Aryans Business School (ABS), was the keynote speaker. The event was presided over by Anshu Kataria, chairman of ABS. Prof BB Tandon said by 1960, the Indian banking industry had become an important tool to facilitate the development of the Indian economy. Lawyers’ chambers to cost Rs 3 crore
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 25 As many as 205 chambers will be built in the four-storied building and its foundation stone will soon be laid by Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal. District Bar Association President Amardeep Singh Dharni said the construction of the new building would begin in November and all formalities, including the lease deed and map of the building, had been completed. The building committee of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has also cleared the pending formalities in this regard. Each lawyer will deposit Rs 50,000 for these chambers and so far Rs 75 lakh have been deposited. According to estimates, Rs 1.4 lakh would be spent on each chamber.

Cop’s son held for stealing water taps
Chandigarh, October 25 According to the cops, 24-year-old Mohit Dhiwan, son of head constable Bihar Lal and a resident of Police Colony in Sector 26, was caught red handed in the wee hours today. Head constable Jasbir Singh, a ‘munshi’ at the police lines nabbed Dhiwan with eight stolen water taps in his possession at around 2:30 am. He was handed over to the police, which arrested him after registering a case
against him. The accused was produced before a local court, which remanded him to one day’s police custody. A police officer said they suspect Dhiwan, who is unemployed, could be involved in more such incidents.
Scooter stolen
Neha Ved of Baltana filed a complaint to the police that someone had stolen her Honda Activa scooter (registration no: HR 03 F 7234) from the parking lot of DT Mall in Manimajra on September 23. A case has been registered.
Harassment
Mamta Sharma of Manimajra filed a complaint against her husband, Satish Sharma, her father-in-law, Vishu Dass and her mother-in-law, Tripta, all residents of Manimajra, alleging they were harassing her
to bring dowry. A case has been registered.
3 hurt in mishap
Bhupinder Singh of Manimajra filed a complaint to the police alleging an unidentified Mahindra Bolero jeep knocked down a motorcycle driven by his son near the railway lights point on Thursday. His son along with two others was injured in the mishap and was rushed to the Sector 16 Government Multi Specialty Hospital. A case has been registered in
this regard.
Schoolgirl missing
Sukhpal Singh of Dashmesh Nagar, Nayagaon reported to the police that his 17-year-old daughter, Ravina, wearing jeans and a white t-shirt and having a fair complexion had gone missing from Government School, Sector 20 on September 23. A case has been registered at the Sector 19 police station.
Two injured
in brawls
Two persons were injured in two separate incidents of brawls in various parts of the city. Brij Mohan of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, reported to the police that Pinju Krishan and others had beaten him up in Sector 26 on October 12. He suffered injuries in the assault and was admitted to the Government Multi Specialty Hospital,
Sector 16. A case has been registered. Rakesh of Charan Singh Colony, Mauli Jagran, filed a complaint with the police alleging that Siya Ram, Younis, Shashi and Lovely had beaten him up and threatened him in the colony yesterday. The police has arrested Younis after registering a case.
Theft
Jimmy Bhatia of Sector 47 reported that his two ATM cards, a gold ring and other articles had been stolen from his residence. A case has been registered. |

18-yr-old girl commits suicide
Chandigarh, October 25 The police said the victim, Mrinal Sharma, was found hanging from a ceiling fan by her father, Ravi Sharma, a deputy manager in the State Bank of India (SBI), Sector 17. He reached home at his SBI colony residence around 5.30 pm and found the door locked from inside. After failing to get any response to his repeated knocks, he broke open the door and found his daughter hanging. The police was informed about the incident, which shifted the body to the Government Multi Specialty Hospital, Sector 16. The body was handed over
to the family after postmortem today. Mrinal was studying at a college in Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, and her father had been transferred to the city a few months ago. While her mother and two brothers lived in Himachal Pradesh, she was living here with her father. The police has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. |

Gursobha wins show jumping event
Chandigarh, October 25 A sixth grade student of Yadavindra Public School, Gursobha astride his mare “Kashish” jumped all four rounds flawlessly and well within the stipulated time without incurring any penalties, which is unprecedented in the nation’s history of the equestrian show jumping in the children category. Equestrian experts in India predicted a top bracket worldwide ranking considering the high standard of his performance. The championship is conducted by the Federation Equestrian International (FEI), the highest world body for governing various equestrian sports disciplines all over the world, promotes equestrian sports the world over and organises championships to encourage young riders. The show jumping courses in all such competitions are designed by experienced FEI course designers, generally by the champions of the sport and are considered quite tough and technically challenging. The scores and results obtained from all participating nations are finally compiled to declare individual and team’s worldwide standing. Gursobha has been riding and competing at various levels in different horse shows all over the region ever since the age of seven. Besides bagging numerous medals at different equestrian competitions in the last few years, the child prodigy was adjudged the best child rider at the Delhi Horse Show 2008. Coached under Jatinder Jit Singh, an accomplished rider, Gursobha has been actively riding in the national circuit for the past many years and has been receiving guidance and encouragement from the city-based international equestrian judge and former secretary general of the National Equestrian Federation, Col Sarpartap Singh. The budding player is planning to move up further in the international rankings and dreams of making India proud with an Olympic medal in the equestrian sport. |
APJ claim cricket title
Chandigarh, October 25 Electing to bat first, APJ was given a fine start by their openers Vineet Dhaka and Kapil Puniya, who put on 86 runs for the first wicket in a quick time. When Vineet departed on his individual score of 47, Sarthak who came in one drop played a fine innings of 32 runs. After Kapil departed for 38, it looked as if the APJ team would stumble and will not be able to get to a huge total but 12-year-old Sahil Sharma played a fine knock off 22 runs and in the end cameos by Shivraj 22 off 15 balls and Arsh 18 off 15 balls lifted the APJ score to a commanding 193 runs in the allotted 30 overs. Nipun two for 19 and Jasvinder two for 24 bowled well for the Saupin’s team. In reply, Saupin’s team never looked like chasing the total and in the end was bundled out for 119 runs in 29 overs. Only Nipun 23, Pavleen 31 and Simardeep 21 showed some resistance with the bat. For the APJ team, it was a team effort in the bowling department as well. While Sahil (20 runs off six overs), Ashish (1 for 14 in six overs) and Ashish (one for 20 in six overs) checked the flow of runs, Aditya (three for 16) and Sarthak (two for 14) picked up the wickets. In the end, a clinical team effort made this victory possible for the APJ team. Pavleen of Saupin’s school was declared the best batsman, while Aditya and Sartak, both of APJ, were declared the best bowler and best fielder, respectively. Anuradha to supervise matches in Asian TT meet
Chandigarh, October 25 A talented referee Anuradha (27) has already more than 20 international matches to her credit. She has supervised matches, including girls’ finals, in the Junior Pro Tours in Indore in March and September this year, the Junior Asian Table Tennis in Jaipur in July 2009 and the Junior Pro Tour in Pune last year. Anuradha, who runs a table tennis academy (Chandigarh Table Tennis Club) at Gurukul Global School, said working in the international tournaments was a challenging job, as one had to be on his or her toes throughout the matches. Loss of concentration even for a fraction of a second can reverse the result of the match, she added. A white official Anuradha said at present she was getting international matches to supervise in domestic tours and her aim was to supervise matches in the international tournaments, including Olympics, abroad. “I am systematically preparing myself to upgrade my knowledge through the Internet and other sources, besides preparing for the ATU course to upgrade my status to green badge,” she added. Anuradha, who also trains table tennis players at Sacred Heart School in Sector 26, said there was no dearth of talents in the city beautiful. A number of schools, especially private schools, besides Chandigarh Table Tennis Association officials are deeply involved in popularising the sports discipline by organising regular tournaments, sending teams for nationals and providing coaching,” she said. |
