Rural Punjab has got a bad tooth
Jalandhar, October 24 A survey by The Tribune revealed that nine out of the 22 dental units in the district are non-functional. Of these nine units, eight are non-functional due to the non-availability of dental surgeons while one unit is not functioning due to the alleged compromised quality of equipment. The dental unit of the Community Health Centre, Lohian, which caters to more than 33 villages, has been defunct since 1999. The last time people could avail the services of a dental surgeon was in 2006 when a doctor joined here on deputation. Similarly, the dental unit of CHC, Appra, which provides services to 11 villages, lies non-operational as the post of the dental surgeon has been vacant since 2007. Residents of 183 villages, who seek health services from Primary Health Centre, Shahkot, cannot get basic dental treatment as the post of the dental surgeon has been lying vacant for the past five years. Similarly, in Mehatpur PHC, responsible to cater to 134 villages, no dental surgeon has been available after 2002. A single dental surgeon posted at these two stations on deputation visits these units once a week. In Jandiala PHC, which provides healthcare to 89 villages, the post of the dental surgeon has been vacant since July, 2007. The mini PHC, Goraya, which caters to the entire town, hasn’t seen any dentist after July, 2006. Similarly, in Jamsher PHC, which covers 101 villages, there has been no dental surgeon since November 2008. The condition is no better at the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, which provides dental care to residents of the city and adjoining rural areas. It has a single dental surgeon and another post is lying vacant. The Nurmahal CHC is unable to provide optimal dental services to residents of 85 villages due to the non-operational dental chair. The surgeon there is not even able to provide basic care to patients. Information revealed that 127 out of a total of 285 posts of dental surgeon in hospitals and health centres in the state are lying vacant. Interestingly, approximately 1,000 students are admitted to the 12 dental colleges, of which approximately 600 students pass out every year. This means that the government has not taken any pain to recruit doctors to provide quality healthcare to the masses who are largely dependent on the state-run hospitals. |

Cong leader backs CM on n-power plant
Hoshiarpur, October 24 Talking to The Tribune here today, Thakur said Punjab was facing an acute power shortage and more than eight-hour power cuts were being imposed which had caused a great setback to the existing industrial units on account of which many industrialists had either closed down their units or had shifted base. This had increased unemployment and caused frustration among the youth. Though Badal had earlier opposed nuclear power plants in the country, he had now realised the gravity of the situation and had made up his mind to approach the Prime Minister for setting up an LWR-based nuclear power plant in the state to save the dying industry and give a boost to agriculture. Thakur said he would also write to Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh to set up a nuclear power plant in Punjab. |
