BKS demand
: The Bharat Krishak Samaj (BKS) has urged the Centre to issue a postal stamp in the memory of Dr Norman E. Borlaug, who passed away recently at Texas. BKS chairman Ajay Veer Jakhar in a letter to the Prime Minister said Dr Borlaug collected numerous accolades in his lifetime and now the farmers of India were urging the government to issue a special commemorative stamp in his honour. “A stamp in the memory of Dr Borlaug will be a token of appreciation by the people and farmers of India towards a man who truly helped our country”, says Ram Niwas Mirdha, president of the BKS (farmers’ forum India).

Cheque distribution: Taking strong exception to the distribution of cheques by the former BJP MLA, Dr Ram Kumar Goyal, on behalf of the state government local legislator Sunil Jakhar, said on Thursday that he would raise the issue during the winter session of Punjab Vidhan Sabha. Speaking to the media, during his visit to the city markets to extend greetings on the eve of Diwali, he recalled that Panchayat Minister Ranjit Singh Brahmpura had assured the House that grants under the welfare and development schemes would be distributed only by the elected representatives but here in Abohar sub-division neither the government officers nor the former MLA of the ruling alliance had any respect for what had been stated in the Vidhan Sabha, Jakhar resented.

Personal contact programme
: The Dharam Prachar Committee of the SGPC will hold a personal contact programme (PCP) of correspondence course on Sikh studies in Punjabi and Hindi from October 20. It will conclude on December 5 and will be held at various places in Punjab, Rajasthan, UP and Himachal Pradesh.

PSEB engineers flay Board
: The Council of Junior Engineers (Thermal plant) has criticised the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) management for not adhering to laid down guidelines in its transfer policy while transferring engineers.  Malkit Singh Sidhu, president of the council, claimed that engineers were being transferred on an arbitrary basis. Citing a recent case, Sidhu said that Angrez Singh, a Junior Engineer (JE) was transferred from the Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant, Bathinda to Bathinda division without assigning any reason.

Samrita wins poem contest: Samrita Sharma of Class X of Dasmesh Public School, Faridkot, has brought laurels to the school by topping the state-level Hindi poem singing competition held recently at Patiala. The programme was organised by the state language department to inculcate love for the national language among the school students. She sang the poem ‘Geet-to-Gaa’ written by the famous poet Suresh Watsyan. Principal S. Gurcharan Singh lauded the child and congratulated Parveen, senior Hindi teacher, Raju Chawla, music teacher, Shavinder Singh, the senior co-ordinator and the parents whose encouragement has helped Samrita make a name for herself.

DAV professor honoured: Prof RK Uppal, head, department of economics, DAV College, Malout, has been honoured with the 'Rashtriya Gourav Award' on October 10, by the Delhi-based Indian International Friendship Society. The award was presented to him by Dr Bhishma Narain Singh, former governor of Assam and Tamil Nadu during the national seminar on 'Economic growth and national integration'. Prof Uppal was honoured in recognition of his work in the field of education and research. He has written more than 32 books and has published 103 research papers.

Chairmen appointed: The Punjab government on Friday nominated Kulbir Singh Mattewal, Gurdip Singh, Gurdial Singh Kalra and Sikandar Singh as chairmen of the Market Committees of Amritsar, Bhogpur (Jalandhar), Adampur (Jalandhar) and Sangat (Bathinda), respectively, under Sub Section (1) of Section 16 of the Punjab Agricultural Produce Markets Act, 1961, besides 67 members in six Market Committees of Amritsar, Bhogpur and Adampur in Jalandhar district.

Birth centenary celebrated
: Staff and students of the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Ayurvedic College celebrated the birth centenary of Bhagwan Dhanwanti, the father of ayurveda. Dr Sanjeev Manatkala, principal of the college informed that the students participated in a ‘havan’. Dr DS Bhullar, Dr RS Tangri, Dr Varinder Sharma, besides others from the medical fraternity participated in the function. Kamal Sharma, general secretary of the BJP and Dharampal Bansal also participated as special guests.

Jalandhar
PAP exam result declared
: The Chairman of the Recruitment Board (Male)-cum-DIG, Administration of Punjab Armed Police (PAP) Headquarters, said on Friday that the results of the recently held exam for men constables in the PAP was declared. Candidates who had cleared the written exam would be informed soon by post.

School games from Oct 27: The district-level primary school games will be held at Government Senior Secondary School, Rurka Kalan, on October 27 and 28.The DEO (Primary), Kamal Kanta, said the games would be inaugurated at 10 am on October 27. Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sarwan Singh Phillaur would give away prizes to the winners on the concluding day.

Football championship from Nov 2: The District Football Association will organise a district football championship from November 2 to 4 at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium. The championship will be played on the knock-out basis. President of the association Inderjit Singh said the football teams were required to submit their entries to Sudesh Kumar Vaish, secretary of the association, on or before October 25.

Two peddlers held
: The CIA has arrested two drug peddlers, identified as Jasbir Ram of Jandiala village and Balbir Singh of Gobindpur, at a naka near Kaleran village and seized 80 kg of poppy husk from their possession, informed CIA in charge Rakesh Kumar here on Thursday.

Seminar on Air Force: The district Employment Generation and Training Department in collaboration with Airman Selection Centre, Ambala, organised a seminar to aware students on the prospects in Air Force here at R.K. Arya College on Thursday. The students of senior secondary classes of R.K. Arya Collegiate School, Government Senior Secondary School, JSFH Khalsa Senior Secondary School and Shivalik Public School participated in the seminar.

Workshop for science teachers: The district Education Department organised a workshop involving science teachers here at Government Senior Secondary School on Thursday. More than 100 school teachers participated in the workshop. District Science Supervisor Balihar Singh Bains, Assistant District Science Supervisor Kuldip Singh and Rajan Bhardwaj, Headmaster, Government High School, Alachaur, gave valuable tips to organise activities like Science Congress, eco club and preparing the students for National Means-cum Merit Test.

Politicians ‘supported’ murder accused
: Various Sikh organisations of the state held a protest on Friday alleging that leaders of various political parties supported the accused in the Amandeep murder case. The protesters burnt the effigies of political leaders from Jammu. However, they expressed happiness over the directions of CM Omar Abdullah to arrest the father of the accused within 48 hours.

Soldier killed in mishap: An Army soldier was knocked to death by a speeding vehicle near the garrison town of Samba on the Jammu-Pathankot National Highway on Friday. Official sources said Satpal Singh of 129 Infantry Battalion, who was posted in Samba, was knocked to death by a vehicle driven negligently.

Earrings snatched: Two mobike-borne youths robbed a woman off her gold earrings at Dashmesh Nagar in the Digiana area on Friday. Sources said Surjeet Kour was out of her house to dispose of domestic refuse when one of the youths riding motorcycle pounced upon her gold earrings. After snatching the earrings, the duo escaped.
