1 killed, 5 NRIs hurt as bus falls into canal
Rajpura, October 16 The bus was on its way from New Delhi airport to Mohali when its driver lost control over the vehicle and it fell 20 feet into the nearly empty SYL canal. The US citizen killed in the accident has been identified as Mandeep Singh (45) who was sitting beside one of the windows of the bus. The windowpane nearly chopped off his neck, resulting in his death on the spot. Other passengers received serious injuries in the accident. Senior police officials from Rajpura reached the spot and took stock of the situation. They said the bus did not overturn when it fell into the canal. “Had it been otherwise then none of the passengers could have survived,” said one of the cops. The driver of the bus,
Harvinder, has been booked by the police for rash and negligent driving. He is undergoing treatment at the local Civil Hospital. The others who received injuries have been identified as conductor Baljeet Singh, Jatinder Singh and his daughter Simranjeet Kaur who were returning from France, Kunal Grover, a resident of
Sirsa, who was on his way from Dubai to Panchkula and Harpal Kaur of Bagha Purana in
Moga. Police officials said seven persons were travelling in the bus, including five
NRIs, a driver and a bus conductor. Mandeep was sitting beside Kunal, who informed the latter that he had not revealed about his visit to his parents, residing in
Mohali. “He wanted to give a surprise to his parents as they always wanted him to come back, at least once, for the past many years,” said the police officials.
Mandeep has left his 15-year-old son and wife in the US and decided to come alone to meet his parents. Seriously injured passengers have been rushed to the GMSH-32 in Chandigarh. The condition of Kunal is said to be serious and might as well be shifted to GMSH-32, said police officials. |

Five injured in group clash
Patiala, October 16 The incident took place when Vishal, who sells meat near the bus stand, entered an argument with Amandeep, an Army man who had come on holiday, Harbhajan Singh, both of Deep Nagar, and Amarinder Singh of Ranjeet Nagar. The three had come in a Zen car. Vishal, who hails from Majri, called his friends and a brawl broke out, injuring the three. Vishal and his friend Baljinder Singh were also injured in the brawl. The five were taken to Rajindra Hospital and were admitted to the same emergency ward, where they again had an argument. Later, around 60 friends of Vishal reached the hospital and created a ruckus. They even pulled out the drips of the three injured and ransacked the ward. SP (city) RK Sharma reached the scene and controlled the mob. Vishal’s accomplices alleged that the other group had threatened them with a revolver, whereas Amandeep and his friends denied the allegations. The SP said an inquiry would be conducted and action would be taken against those found guilty. The injured were later admitted to different wards of the hospital. Policemen were still guarding the hospital till the time of the filing of the report. |

Seminar on reforms in governance
Patiala, October 16 In his opening remarks, IIPA vice-chairman, Patiala branch, and dean, College Development Council, Punjabi University, Patiala, Dr Manjit Singh, emphasised that with the onslaught of technology and globalisation, there was the need to reconcile with the mounting pressure to have more efficient and transparent administrative structure. He further underlined the need to implement the RTI Act 2005 more rigorously and effectively. Former chairman of Punjab School Education Board, Dr Kehar Singh, stressed on the need to make the rules more clear, so that there was no ambiguity of interpretation in them. Dr Singh suggested that the efficiency could be achieved by minimising the discretion available with the decision makers. |

Kalka, October 16 Students took part in various competitions at the school. A cultural programme was organised in which HMT deputy manager PD Choudhary was the chief guest. Man held for murder
Kharar, October 16 The accused admitted to having killed Paramjeet Singh, whose body was found in the fields near Budali village. The investigating officials said the accused upon return from England had found that Paramjeet had developed illicit relations with his wife and had been visiting his house in the absence of other family members. Ranjeet decided to eliminate Ranjeet and strangulated him after spiking his beer with intoxicants. He strangulated the victim when he fell unconscious after consuming the beer and dumped his body in the fields. |

Insurance firm fined Rs 34,330
Chandigarh, October 16 The complainant, Meenu Soni, purchased a mediclaim policy from the company from July 9, 2008, for a year. They were supplied the copy of the cover note, but the terms and conditions were never supplied. During the validity of the insurance policy, Meenu got medical treatment from Saroj Hospital and Heart Institute, Delhi, and claim regarding the same was lodged with the company, which was rejected despite receipt of certificate of the doctor concerned of the hospital. In their written reply, the company submitted that the policy terms and conditions were supplied to the complainants. It was pleaded that the claim of the complainant was rejected as per the terms and conditions of the policy the treatment arising from or traceable to pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, abortion or complications of any of this kind were not covered under the policy. Chandigarh, October 16 Nandini who had won the gold in the pattern, air shield and defence drill events was awarded the medals by special secretary VS Kundu, Home Government of Haryana, during the medal presentation ceremony held at Choi Kwang Do Martial Art School in Panchkula today. Giving details to the Tribune, Bikram S Thapa said among other winners honoured during the function include Bhavna, Prabhleen, Avneet, Diksha, Nitin, Sunpreet and Raksha, who had won two golds out of four events. Coca-Cola hockey meet postponed
Chandigarh, October 16 Disclosing this here today, CFA secretary Rakesh Bakshi said the postponement was necessitated due to festivals and added that new dates would be announced soon. Players born on or after January 1, 1995, but not later than December 1997 will be eligible to compete in the tournament, he added. Bakshi said the participating players had to produce latest schools identity cards, original date of birth certificates issued by the registrar of births and deaths or by the health department at the time of every match. He said probables would be selected during the meet. The selected players will attend a 10-day coaching camp at DAV Senior Secondary School ground in Sector 8 under the supervision of Sports Authority of India coach Narinder Thapa. He said during the camp, a state team would be chosen for the Coca Cola Sub-Junior National Mir Iqbal Hussain Football Tournament at Gurgaon from November 15 to 23. |
