Limca Book of Records
Patiala, October 9 Young geniuses from the winning school in Patiala would now compete with the winners from 74 other schools in the semifinals. Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School and DAV Public School stood second and third, respectively. Around 198 students from 33 schools participated from Patiala, out of which six schools competed in the city final, namely Apollo Public Senior Secondary School, The British Co-ed High School, DAV Public School, Holy Angel School, Shri Guru Harkrishan Public School and St Peter’s Academy. Gurdeep Saggu, DGM, sales (Kandhari Beverages Pvt Ltd) franchise partner of Coca-Cola India Pvt Ltd, presented the award to the winners. Following the huge success of the Limca Book of Records, 2008, this year the quiz is being organised at an even larger scale to continue its journey of promoting knowledge and awareness amongst the young minds of the country. The quiz aptly takes its lead name from the Limca Book of Records, as the record book celebrates the outstanding achievements of Indians across the globe and is a source of inspiration especially for the country’s youth. The multi-city initiative has been launched in partnership with “Know & Grow with Derek” and involves participation of young geniuses from classes VIII to XII. As part of the initiative, a series of quiz competitions is being organised across 3,000 schools across 75 cities divided into four zones - north, south, east and west. The quiz is also being organised in three stages, inter-school level, semifinals and national finals, from April to December, 2009. |

Qawwali soiree enchants audience
Ropar, October 9 He ended the musical evening with “Mittar pyare nu.” He was presented a shawl, as a mark of honour for his talent. The chief guest of qawwali night was MLA Charanjit Singh Channi, who appreciated the efforts of the district administration in organising the fair. Prominent among others present included Deputy Commissioner Priyank Bharti, SDM Anandita Mitra, ADC (under training) Rupanjali, district transport officer Karanbir Singh Mann, district development and panchayat officer Sanjiv Garg and others. Kalka, October 9 While addressing a massive gathering of people at Anaj Mandi this evening, Narinder Kashyap severely condemned the Congress for its overall failure in Haryana during its tenure of four and half years on all aspects like inflation, shortage of water and electricity. Accusing the Congress, he said the government led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda was neither bothered about farmers, labour class, businessmen, unemployed youths, scheduled castes and backward classes. He accused the Congress stating that it had been misleading the people by making false promises. He further alleged that Hooda had only focused on Rohtak and had provided employment opportunities only in this district. He claimed that the BSP would definitely form government in Haryana as the party was expected to win 30 to 35 seats out of total 90 seats. Naveen Jindal canvasses for Rana
Congress MP from Kurukshetra Naveen Jindal today addressed a public meeting, which was organised on Devi Dass link road here. He was here to canvass for Satvinder Rana, the Congress contestant for the assembly election. While addressing the meeting, Jindal said the Congress had won nine seats out of 10 in Haryana in the Parliamentary election. He hoped that the Congress would clinch more than 75 per cent of the total seats in the assembly election and Satvinder Rana would play a vital role for the development of Kalka. He indicated that Rana would be made minister of the Congress government in the state after being elected to assembly. He also laid an emphasise on uplifting Hindustan Machine Tools (HMT), Pinjore, adding that he, along with Kumari Selja, would take up the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about special package for the HMT. Rana urged Jindal that on the tune of Baddi, Parwanoo and Kala Amb of Himachal Pradesh, big industrial units should be set up in Kalka to cope with unemployment. ‘Bijli, paani, sewerage’ major promises here
Kalka, October 9 “Bijli, paani, sewerage” remain the prime thing to offer in speeches of contestants here. The stakes are high. The speech of Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda during campaigning for party candidate Satvinder Singh Rana has provided fuel to the rivals of Rana. Hooda had said Kalka did not get the required attention during the last five years. Cashing on it was Bhagat Singh, an independent. He promised solving the drinking water problem and improving the sanitation system. The removal of dangling electricity wires was also being promised. Bhagat Singh did not forget to promise big industry in the area, generating at least 50,000 jobs. Vijay Bansal, Bahujan Samaj Party candidate, did not lag behind in promises. The area had remained neglected for a long time and there was a dire need to speed up development in the area. The people must get the better living conditions on the pattern of Panchkula, he said. He had been promising that he would ensure that the electorate would get proper electricity and water supply. Pardeep Chaudhary, INLD candidate, had also been raising his voice against the lack of civic amenities in the area. Congress candidate Rana agreed that the people here had suffered a lot and no development had been carried out in the area. Besides legendry Punjabi singer Gurdas Mann, Bollywood actress Minissha Lamba will also campaign for Bhagat Singh, an independent candidate from Kalka assembly constituency. Lamba and Mann will address the supporters of Bhagat Singh at the grain market tomorrow, said a spokesman of the candidate. Lamba will begin a road show from Yadavindra Gardens, Pinjore, at 3 pm. |

80 teachers found missing from duty
Patiala, October 9 The DGSE reached the town early in the morning and inspected around 89 schools of various blocks of the district. He visited the classrooms in various village schools and enquired about the syllabus and how the students were performing. During the visit, the DGSE found that around 80 teachers were missing from schools without any information whereas many turned up late. Also, few teachers who were continuously absenting themselves on the pretext of one duty or the other were identified. Sources revealed that suitable action would be taken against the defaulters. Though no written orders had been issued against them yet, the actions would be taken within a day or two so that other teachers would learn a lesson from this incident, sources added. |

Three nabbed for murder
Patiala, October 9 The accused have been identified as Sumit Kumar, Giyandeep Singh, alias Banti, and Ravi Joshi, all residents of Patiala. Cops added that they would soon arrest another accused in the case Jagdev Singh, who was absconding. Notably, when Dwivedi went missing on April 20, his family lodged a report in the Sadar Police Station on the following day. Despite all attempts, the police could not trace Dwivedi. Addressing a press conference this evening, SP(D) GS Pannu said the accused had confessed that they kidnapped Dwivedi for ransom. “Ashish died when the accused tried to make him unconscious. Thereafter, they burnt his body and dumped it in garbage near Girls Polytechnic College,” disclosed the SP(D). He further stated that since the body was badly mutilated, it could not be identified. SP(D) added that had the family of Dwivedi told the police that accused had demanded ransom of Rs 12 lakh, they would have cracked the case easily. “The accused used Ashish’s SIM card and called up his family demanding ransom. When the family insisted on talking to Ashish, the accused stopped calling them because he was already dead,” said Pannu, while adding that the police managed to crack the case from cell phone details of the deceased. The police has now registered a case under Sections 302 and 334 of the IPC at the Sadar police station. |

Samples of sweets collected
Kharar, October 9 Deputy director (health services), Dr Rakesh Gupta headed the team that collected samples of sweets. District health officer Dr SP Surila said during its campaign launched to check quality of sweets in the festive season, the godown was found housing 383 drums of rasgullas and large amount of petha, burfi and other sweets. The health department conducted raid in the presence of the Kharar police officials. The officials summoned those shopkeepers who had stored their sweets at this godown. The canisters of sweets were opened in presence of respective shopkeepers. Samples of sweets have been collected and sent to Chandigarh food testing lab and results are expected in the next two days. An inquiry would be conducted against the erring people. |

4 youths held for robbery
Dera Bassi, October 9 The police said Pramod Prajapati, who runs a ‘paan’ shop in Kundawala village, had lodged a complaint alleging that some unidentified youths had robbed him of Rs 7,000 and a mobile phone on the Dera Bassi-Barwala road on October 6. The police managed to trace Pramod’s mobile with the help of IMEI number. The mobile was being used by Prabhat Kumar, an employee in a Dera Bassi-based factory. The police reached the factory and nabbed Prabhat on Friday. During the preliminary investigation, the arrested youth named their other accomplices involved in the crime. The four accused admitted to have committed the crime. |
Fraud accused denied bail
Panchkula, October 9 The police booked Davinder Singh, a resident of Sector 6, and his daughter Jasmine on the complaint of three persons for allegedly duping them of Rs 27 lakh. Following this, Panchkula court has also issued non-bailable warrants against the father-daughter duo. According to complainant Pardeep Krishan Goswami, a resident of Sector 51, Chandigarh, he was known to the accused, Davinder Singh, for the past more than a decade. It was in December last year when Davinder advised him to settle his two sons in Canada, claiming that he had contacts in India as well as abroad, which would be helpful for the purpose. A sum of Rs 12 lakh was paid to him in February in the presence of his daughter Jasmine following which he left for the US. Since then, neither Davinder Singh returned nor did he reply to phone calls, alleged Goswami. Jasmine, when contacted at Ludhiana, handed over two cheques for Rs 12 lakh issued by Davinder Singh, which were dishonoured as the account of the accused in the bank had already been closed, Goswami said. Similarly, Vijay Kumar, a resident of Sector 21, Panchkula, alleged that he was duped of Rs 8 lakh by the accused on the pretext of sending him to the US. Another resident of Sector 21, identified as Madan Gopal Singla, also alleged that he was duped of Rs 7 lakh by the same person. He said he had family relations with Davinder Singh for the past five years. It was early this year when he asked for money and Davinder Singh issued him a cheque for Rs 7 lakh, which was dishonoured by the bank. |

Man gets life term for killing wife
Chandigarh, October 9 The court has also slapped a fine of Rs 500 on Sham Sunder, a labourer who suspected his wife’s fidelity and strangled her to death at their Mauli Complex residence on July 12, 2007. The victim’s body bore bruises and other injuries on the limbs. Pieces of broken bangles lay scattered at the spot. A few household articles and utensils also lay scattered. The police had nabbed the accused from a bus stop in Sector 6, Panchkula. |

Chandigarh, October 9 The police said between 10 and 15 persons, armed with batons and sharp-edged weapons, came to the colony and started attacking houses and onlookers without reason. Joginder Singh, a resident of the colony, said the windowpanes of his house were broken and the hooligans tried to manhandle him. Woman dies in car accident
Chandigarh, October 9 The police said that Saroj Bajaj of Sector 15, a housewife and wife of a retired. government employee, was on her way homeafter visiting the club. Suddenly, a white Volvo car (CH-04-S-0217) hit her car, being driven by her husband. The police said that Rajpal Yadav, driver of the vehicle, was arrested and a case under section 279 and 304 of the IPC registered against him. It was also learnt that the car was registered on the name of Puneet Bali, son of retired judge V.K. Bali of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Soon people gathered there and shifted the victim to hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead. The body was kept in the mortuary of the hospital and a post-mortem would be performed tomorrow. |

Abhimanyu Singha, captain of the YPS team, took an oath on behalf of the participating teams. Results: YPS, Mohali, beat Daly College (Indore): YPS won the match and made a score of 261/3 in 25 overs, while Daly College trailed at 126 for 8 in 25 overs. Abhimanyu Singha was declared man of the match. He scored 24 runs off 74 balls. MNSS, Rai, Sonipat, lost to Modern School, New Delhi: MNSS, Rai, Sonipat, was bundled out at 48 runs. Modern School won the match by nine wickets and scored 49 for one. Biren Singh was adjudged as man of the match. He took four wickets in just five overs and gave away nine runs. YPS, Patiala, beat Pinegrove (Dharampur): Pinegrove could only score 74 runs in 25 overs. YPS, Patiala, won the match by scoring 75 runs in 19 overs. Ekjot Singh of YPS, Patiala, was declared man of the match; Birla School, Pillani, beat Rajkumar College (Rajkot): Rajkumar College scored 115 for 10 wickets in 25 overs, while Birla School beat the score by 116 for seven in 17 overs. Diplomats to play in PHD Chamber golf
Chandigarh, October 9 Being organised with an eye on promoting sports tourism, organisers have already roped in 12 diplomats for the big event. The envoys from Austria, Indonesia, Brunei, Mongolia, Zimbabwe, Republic of Malawi and Namibia have already confirmed their participation in the golf tournament. Also teeing off will be 40 senior bureaucrats from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh. To be played on the three/fourth handicap stable ford format, 150 golfers, who will tee off for the event will also include top industrialists from Delhi and members of the PHD Chamber. According to PHD Chamber president Satish Bagrodia, Chandigarh with its lush greenery had immense potential to encourage the sports tourism, as a part of tourist itinerary, particularly for golf tourism. He further added, “Chandiarh is an ideal destination for golf. Football meet from Oct 19
Chandigarh, October 9 Rakesh Bakshi, secretary, CFA, said players born on or after January 1, 1995, but not after December 1997 are eligible to take part in the tournament. Entry form, along with a fee of Rs 150 can be deposited, with the list of 18 players verified by respective school principals. Participating players have to produce latest school identity cards, original date of birth certificates at the time of every match. The CFA has sent invitation to all schools of Chandigarh and more than 15 schools have already confirmed their participation. The CFA secretary said probables would be selected during the meet. Selected players will attend a 10-day coaching camp on the DAV Senior Secondary School ground, Sector 8, under the supervision of Sports Authority of India (SAI) coach Narinder Thapa. During the camp a state team will be selected, which will participate in the Coca Cola Sub-Junior National Mir Iqbal Hussain Football Tournament at Gurgaon from November 15 to 23.
