Jammu, October 3
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Amandeep murder case today arrested two persons from Roop Nagar and impounded as many as 300 files and a computer containing business details of Choudhary Nagar Singh, father of the main accused Jatinder Singh, aka Raja.

The SIT also picked up a chartered accountant from Bahu Plaza and interrogated him at the Gandhi Nagar police station.

Meanwhile, a local court this evening extended the police remand of former Jammu SSP Manohar Singh, former Gandhi Nagar SHO Sultan Mirza and former investigation officer sub-inspector Satnam Singh by five more days (till October 8).

Official sources said the SIT conducted a raid in Roop Nagar this morning and impounded a Toyota Qualis transporting as many as 300 files and a computer containing business dealings of Choudhary Nagar Singh to a ‘safe’ place.

During questioning, driver of the contract carrier Ram Kumar of Janipur Housing Colony told the SIT that he had been paid Rs 500 to shift the consignment to a beauty saloon in Roop Nagar.

Sources said during the raid, the SIT also picked up Rajinder Singh and Rahul Sharma, both residents of Janipur, adding that the latter was suspected to be a close aide of Choudhary Nagar Singh.

In the evening, the SIT also produced three suspended police officers, SSP Manohar Singh, SHO Sultan Mirza and SI Satnam Singh before the CJM Jammu, YP Bourney at his official residence in Ambphalla seeking extension in police remand. The remand of the arrested officers was to end today.

After hearing both the sides, the CJM extended the remand of the three officers till October 8.

However, counsel of the suspended SSP, Advocate DS Chauhan, opposed extension on the grounds that SIT had so far been unable to make any headway in the case and no recovery had been effected from his client, who had no connection with Choudhary Nagar Singh.

But the SIT, represented by Deputy Prosecuting Officer Onkar Singh, sought the extension on various grounds, including the controversy regarding the weapon used for the murder.

Meanwhile, Second Additional Sessions Judge Jammu Vinod Chatterji Koul today adjourned the pre-arrest bail application moved by Nagar Singh and his brothers Ujagar and Rakesh to October 6. Already into hiding, Nagar Singh and his brothers had moved a pre-arrest bail through their counsel Advocate MA Goni.

He added that the police was not harassing her and her supporters.

The SSP also said Marvi’s accusation that her mother was having an illicit relationship with a close relative was the reason for her not staying with her family had been found baseless. He also expressed his helplessness in providing security to her.

Speculations are still on as to who killed the militant in the Kalsian area of Upper Shahdara Sharief on September 27 evening. The recorded statement of Noor Ahmed, in whose house the militants had entered on September 27, a copy of which is available with The Tribune, says that Noor killed the militant. His daughter Rukhsana, who hogged the limelight and became the focus of the country, had claimed on every television channel and newspapers that she killed the militant.

According to Noor Ahmed, three unidentified gunmen entered his house around 9:30 pm on September 27 and started thrashing him with sticks. Noor, who is nursing his wounds in the District Hospital, had said they were inquiring about the case of rape by two locals with his daughter Rukhsana.

Noor had said when they started kicking him, his brother Wakalat Hussain and son Ajaz Ahmed intervened and they attacked a militant. They also struck another militant with the axe, killing him. He had said Rukhsana also picked up the other rifle and ran after the gunmen. “She also fired at the militants”.

Rukhsana, who hogged the limelight, had claimed on the news channels and the newspapers that she had killed the militant with an axe. Meanwhile, a copy of the FIR at Thanamandi police station assessed by The Tribune reads that both father and daughter killed the militant.

The Tribune on September 29 had quoted police sources saying in a rare act of bravery Rukhsana, 20, along with her younger brother Ajaz Ahmed (18) after seeing Noor Muhammad (father), Rasheeda Begum (mother) and uncle Walayat Hussain being beaten by a group of three militants, killed a militant with an axe and injured another in the same manner in the Kalsian area of the Upper Shahdara area of Thanamandi, near here. They added that the third militant fled.

“Rukhsana along with her brother Ajaz hit one of the militants in the head with an axe, who died on the spot, and injured the other militant. The third militant, who was unarmed, managed to take the other militant along and escape leaving the slain militant behind,” the sources said.

The apple-rich town of Sopore in Baramulla district also observed a shutdown against the continued house arrest of separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani and the arrest of others separatist leaders.

The Minister for Rural Development, Law and Panchayat, Ali Mohammad Sagar accompanied by the Minister of State for R&B, Javid Ahmad Dar today visited Baramulla to take stock of the situation.

The minister interacted with several deputations and local representatives of the area and assured that justice would be delivered. He said an enquiry would be initiated into the incident and a report would be out in 15 days.

Addressing a public gathering here after inaugurating a Rs 18 crore power grid station at Tethaar on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, Omar said a section of political adventurists tried their best to play with the sentiments of people on the issue of Central University.
