Appointed
: Member of Parliament from Faridkot Lok Sabha constituency Paramjit Kaur Gulshan has been appointed a member of the committee on subordinate legislation by Meira Kumar, Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Dental check-up camp: A dental check-up camp was organised this week at Sadhana village by the Punjab National Bank Farmer Training Centre, Mehraj. Nearly 250 students of both primary and middle schools including villagers got examined by Dr Jagtar Singh (Singla Dental Clinic, Rampura ) with the help of Babu Singh (dental mechanic). Medicines were provided by the PNB FTC Mehraj free of cost. Principal and village panchayat thanked the director for this. SL Beniwal (direrctor) also focused on the centre’s activities and future planning for rural uplift. 

Paper presentation in US: The Department of Applied Sciences, Baba Farid College of Engineering and Technology, Bathinda has achieved another milestone with the acceptance of a research paper ‘Preparation and characterisation of ferroelectric ammonium potassium nitrate composite films’ authored by Navneet Dabra and D. Jasbir S. Hundal for oral presentation at the international conference, Materials Sciences and Technology 2009 (MS&T 09) to be held from October 25-29 at David L. Lawrence Convention Centre, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. Gurmeet Singh Dhaliwal, chairman, Baba Farid College of Engineering and Technology, congratulated the faculty involved in the research work.

GGS students win gold: GGS College of Information Technology & Research, Talwandi Sabo, has won ten gold and two silver medals in the state-level Punjab Technical University Swimming Championship held at GNDEC Ludhiana recently. The details are as under: Parveen Kumar won gold in 200m, 400m, 800m free style, silver medal in 1500m backstroke. Sandeep Kumar won gold in 50m, 100m, 200m butterfly and 50m backstroke. Malook Singh gold in 200m medley, 100m breaststroke, silver in 50m backstroke. GGS group has also done very well in the state-level Punjab Technical University cross-country championship held at DAVIET, Jalandhar on September 26. Gursish Singh and Amrik Singh won the second and third position, respectively. The GGSIIT&R team secured the third position. The following team members won bronze medals: Amrik Singh, Gursish, Manjeet, Dharmpal, Jaspal, Gagandeep.

Cancer check-up camp: Keeping in view the rising number of cancer deaths in the region, the Bathinda Vikas Manch and the Inner Wheel Club would organise a free cancer check-up camp on Sunday at the Mahabeer Dal Hospital near the old bus stand here. Dr Jatin Sareen and Dr Vijay Bansal would examine the patients. Rakesh Narula from the Manch has appealed to all to derive benefit from the camp.

Paddy procurement
: On the directions of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, his Principal Secretary DS Guru on Thursday convened a meeting of senior administrative secretaries and heads of procurement agencies to review arrangements of paddy procurement and its prompt lifting. Guru said the total procurement of paddy this year was likely to exceed 140 lakh MT. Meanwhile, the CM deputed senior officers to oversee the procurement operations in all districts.

Protest over rising crime
: Residents and shopkeepers here on Friday observed a complete bandh and staged a protest against the administration for “ineffective” measures being taken to control the rising crime graph in the area. The shopkeepers took out a protest march and shops remained closed. They staged a protest outside the residence of Sheetal Singh, state Chief Parliamentary Secretary, and raised slogans against him.

Prosthetic camp
: Leading NGO Social Welfare Society (SWS) organised the second prosthetic camp in Aroravansh Complex recently. Bhagwan Parshuram Temple Fazilka, Bhagwan Mahavir Viklang Sahayata Samiti Jaipur, Lala Durga Charan Charitable Artificial Limbs Centre and Parvati Devi Trust Ambala conducted the camp. Camp chairman Shashi Kant and SWS president Raj Kishore Kalra said Jaipur based Captain RL Handa and his team members examined more than 150 patients, who reached the camp from far-flung areas of Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab to get prosthetic aid for their limbs.

Forest land
: The sleuths of the forest department saved around four acres of land near village Langeana from unauthorised occupation and planted trees on that land. Mohinder Singh Dhaliwal, press secretary, All India Forests Officers Federation, said certain elements belonging to the land mafia were trying to unlawfully occupy the forest land for which their department has informed the deputy commissioner and higher forest officials so that the their mutations were not executed. Dhaliwal said the forest land cannot be utilised for any other purpose other than forestation as per the forest conservation Act 1980 and rulings of the Supreme Court, dated 12 December, 1996.

Roko cancer camps
: ‘Roko cancer’ organisation which has been organising camps to identify cancer patients and create awareness about this disease, has identified nearly 53 suspected and positive cases in different places of Mansa. State head of these organisations, Dharminder, informed that a special camp would be organised to know the exact status of suspected cases at Mansa and Monika Laboratory Bathinda. A free treatment would be provided to the confirmed patients under the ‘Nanhi Chaan’ at Gurugobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot, he said.

Monthly tests
: Director-General of School Educaion (DGSE) Krishan Kumar has rescheduled the monthly test in mathematics to be held on October 5 in government schools. Now, the test would be held on October 9. The other tests would be held as per schedule.

Poppy husk seized: The police seized 74 kg poppy husk and 15 boxes of country-made liquor from drug peddlers setting up two separate nakas. Peddlers, identified as Ravinder Singh of Fatehabad village and Balbir Singh of Dhakka Colony (Phillaur), however, escaped abandoning their vehicles. 

Body found: An unidentified body of a youth was found from an abandoned house here on the Banga Road. SHO (city) Raj Kumar said it seemed that the body was lying there for the past 6-8 days.

Scooterist killed: Local resident Ram Lubhaya, alias Deputy, was killed when his scooter was hit by a vehicle near Hiyala village on the Nawanshahr-Rahon road on Thursday night. He  was returning from Rahon. The police has registered  a case.

Man killed in accident
: Manohar Lal, a resident of Samana, died in an accident when his car collided with a truck near Mavi village on the Patiala-Samana road. A case against the truck driver was registered at the Samana police station, the police said.

9-yr-old killed in mishap: A 9-year-old girl, Jashanjit Kaur, was killed on the spot and her father and brother were injured when their motorcycle collided with a PRTC bus near Bhateri village on the Patiala-Chandigarh road. According to the police, a case under Sections 304-A and 279 against Bhajan Singh, driver of the bus was registered at the Sadar police station.

Theft: Inderjit Singh, a resident of Urban Estate, Patiala, alleged that his motorcycle had been stolen from the main bus stand. A case was registered at the Kotwali police station.

Tuition for the needy
: Scientific Awareness and Social Welfare Forum (SASWF), an NGO, started tuition free of cost for the needy students of classes VIII and X at Khalsa Girls Senior Secondary School on Thursday. Dr AS Mann, president, SASWF, has urged teachers to come forward for this noble cause.

Farmers warned on rain
:Widespread rain is expected in Haryana from October 4 to 6. A spokesman for the Agriculture Department said this here today. He said farmers should not irrigate their crops in the next few days and crops ready for harvesting, should be harvested.

Gandhi Jayanti celebrated
:A meeting comprising people from all religions was organised in the Mahatma Gandhi Park here today to mark Gandhi Jayanti. Sirsa MP Ashok Tanwar, District Congress President Hoshiari Lal Sharma, INLD nominee from Sirsa Padam Jain and BJP nominee Rohtash Jangra were among those who participated in the meeting.

Disability certificates
: As many as 53 identified persons have been given certificates for their being disabled in the mountainous tribal subdivision of Pangi in Chamba district. According to official information, these persons had been issued disability certificates by a team of expects after a thorough check-up.

One killed: One person was killed on the spot when a JCB overturned near Bagga in Chamba district on Thursday, according to a report received here on Friday. The report revealed that the deceased had been identified as Balbir, a resident of Pathankot.

65 kg poppy straw seized
: The police seized 65 kg of poppy straw (bhukki) from a truck in the Ban Talab area near Nagrota on Thursday evening and arrested its driver. Official sources said coming from Srinagar to Jammu, the truck was stopped at the Ban Talab check post for routine checking. Two bags containing the contraband were seized from the truck. Driver Bashir Ahmed, a resident of Digiana, was arrested. Bashir told interrogators that the consignment was to be delivered to a man at Satwari. 

MC scheme for the poor: As many as 1,775 stationery kits, six-month computer course for 355 children, two computer centres and a stipend of Rs 300 each for physically challenged would soon be provided to the poor by the social justice committee of the local municipal corporation. This scheme was approved on Wednesday during a meeting of the social justice committee held under the chairmanship of Municipal Commissioner Mubarak Singh. He said the corporation would also help physically challenged persons without any source of livelihood and provide a monthly stipend of Rs 300.

50 units of blood donated: Volunteers donated around 50 units of blood during a camp organised by the Rotary Club, Jammu, on Friday in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society. Speaking on the occasion, Rotary Club president Joginder Abrol said this Gandhi Jayanti, we decided to give our best to the needy and we decided to donate blood. 

Painting competition: The Childline, an NGO, would organise a painting competition at Rajinder Park on Saturday. As many as 90 students are expected to participate in the competition. The aim is to spread awareness among children regarding Childline, which is a 24 hours free phone emergency outreach service for children in need of care and protection.

Resume talks with Pak, says Tarigami
: MY Tarigami, state secretary of the CPM, has urged India and Pakistan to resume the stalled peace process and resolve all outstanding issues for stability of the entire sub-continent and Jammu and Kashmir in particular. Addressing a conference of Kissan Tehrik at Anantnag on Wednesday, Tarigami said people, especially farmers, were hit the most by tension with Pakistan. Cautioning that the stalled peace process had dangerous implications for the whole region, he said the present situation would help vested interests and extremist forces.
