Swine Flu
Panel to probe Harshita’s death

The district administration yesterday set up a committee to look into the reasons behind the death of Harshita, a class VI student, due to swine flu last week. The committee will have four members and will look into all factors leading to the 12-year-old girl’s death.

Questions have been raised over her death, the first being how did she contract swine flu when she had been in the hostel for over a month and not gone anywhere.

Also, there were allegations of delay or carelessness in providing medical care to the girl.

The district administration has also taken strict measures to control the spread of swine flu in the district. Six teams of doctors will assist the team in the district. Centres will be set up to take samples at all four subdivisions along with two centres in the rural area.

All primary and community health centres have been ordered to remain open for 24 hours to address any complaints of flu-like symptoms.

The district administration has also sought assistance from the Military Hospital, Ambala Cantonment, and Mullana Medical College in case of emergency.

“We have requested them for the use of emergency services like ventilators,” said Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow.

Meanwhile, all schools have been given a proforma wherein they have to maintain the daily record of its students’ health.

An additional isolation ward with ten beds has also been set up at the trauma centre in Ambala City.

Punjab govt not utilising central funds: Preneet

Union minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur here today rapped the Punjab government for not properly utilising central grants and aid meant for different development works.

Interacting with mediapersons after inaugurating a computer training centre set up by Kishan Chand Goyal Memorial and Charitable Trust at Nabha Gate this morning, Preneet Kaur said the Central Government had been making huge grants to the Punjab government for strengthening of infrastructure.

This included funds for six-laning and four-laning of highways. However, many such grants were not being properly utilised by the Punjab government and in some cases, these were getting lapsed.

The MP said she had taken up with the union health minister an ambitious plan for upgrade of the Government Rajindra Hospital here to the level of the PGI, Chandigarh.

She had also taken up the matter of setting up of a super-speciality centre at Rajindra Hospital and the union government had set up a committee under the chairmanship of Dr KK Talwar, PGI director.

However, the state government was throwing the spanner in the execution of the project.

She lauded the initiative of the Kishan Chand Memorial and Charitable Trust in setting up a computer training centre for children from the downtrodden section of the society.

She called upon other social and voluntary organisations to emulate the example, which would go a long way in training youth for taking up technical jobs.

Seminar on stress management

A seminar on stress management was held at Bhaddal Institutes campus. Col Gursewak Singh (retd) spoke on wellness of mind. The Institute of Management Studies organised the seminar that laid emphasis upon three aspects - happiness, stress and its affects and remedial measures and techniques.

“The prime cause of stress among students of professional institutions is pressure of finding suitable jobs in highly competitive environment, said Col Singh. He divided human body into two parts as visible and cosmic. He said if one spends 15 minutes a day to perform a five-step cosmic meditation based on ancient Vedic philosophy and modern theories of cosmic energy, it helps achieve goals by invoking the power of sub-conscious mind.

Babbu Mann enthralls freshers

Singer Babbu Mann enthralled students during a fresher’s party at Doaba Group of Colleges.

Function started with “Deh Siva Var Mohe Eh” followed by lighting of lamp by chief guest Mohan Lal, Punjab state transport minister, and various college management members.

Skits, dance, guitar playing, music and a host of performances followed by a speech delivered by Manjit Singh, executive director DGC, were main attraction of the event.

Mr and Miss Doaba were also selected. Prerna Mahajan was adjudged Miss Doaba and Pankaj Goyal was adjudged Mr Doaba.

Top cop BK Uppal was the chief guest.

Man dies of burns

Rajpura, October 2
A resident of Focal Point died this morning of burns. The deceased has been identified as Nek Chand who was working in Roshan Hi-tech Machine Factory for the past nearly 30 years. As per the family members of the victim, Nek Chand was painting walls late last night and was also smoking. The cigarette came in contact with the thinner and he received 50 per cent burns.

He refused to go to hospital and said his treatment should be done at his house with medicines available in his house. The police got the postmortem conducted at the Civil Hospital and handed over his body to the family members after initiating inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.

Women studies centre inaugurated

Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh inaugurated the Women studies centre on the university campus here yesterday.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned Rs 5 lakh for purchasing equipment, conducting seminars, workshops, short-term courses, and carrying out community outreach programmes at the centre. The centre is aimed at raising gender consciousness, motivating them into the process of thinking and reflecting on the crucial issues of day-to-day life.

Expressing concern over the skewed sex raio, Dr Jaspal Singh said all the 17 districts of the state have low sex ratio.

New hostel soon: VC

Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh said a new girls hostel was being readied on priority and all the existing ones were in the process of being furnished to ensure safety, security and comfort of students.

Addressing students, he said said all the hostels were being equipped with wi-fi system and other infrastructure for conducive atmosphere for studies.

Dr Kulbir Singh Dhillon, Dean, Students Welfare, said: “We have planned to conduct personality development programmes and introduce confidence building measures for our students to save them from getting carried away by the vested interests of a few people.”

Hemant wins gold in karate

The Karate Association of Haryana organised the Haryana State Karate Championship for black belt in the above-18 category, both men and women, in Gohana last week.

Two students from Haryana, namely Suryadev and Hemant Sharma, participated in the championship. Suryadev won the bronze medal in the below-55 kg in the 18-20 years category and Hemant Sharma won the gold medal in the below-75 kg in the above-21 (men) category.

Amar Parkash Ji School (APJ School), Kharar, defeated Black Elephant Cricket Club, Patiala, by 30 runs in the first match of the Triangular Series for Punjab Foundation Cup today, which was played at the Military ground here today.

After winning the toss by Amar Parkash Ji School, Sahil, captain of the team, decided to bat first and APJ School scored 176 runs. Sarthak 42 and Vineet 35 were the main scorers from APJ School side. The Black Elephant Club managed to score 146 for seven in allotted 40 overs.

The 55th state-level games are held at Mata Gujrai Senior Secondary School.

Indira Colony Murder
Accused remanded in 3-day police custody

A local court today sent Babloo, accused in the Indira Colony murder case, to three-day police custody.

Babloo was arrested yesterday and was produced before duty magistrate Mahesh Kumar today. He is charged with murdering Tej Bahadur, alias Kallu, of Indira Colony following a brawl recently. Following the murder, major violence sparked off in the colony after the crowd ran amok and some miscreants also tried to play up the whole incident as a communal outburst.

Requesting for the police remand for five days, the prosecution stated in court that it was to be ascertained that from where the bayonet, which the accused used for stabbing the victim, was sourced from and whether he also possesses a rifle.

Showing no signs of remorse, Babloo, after coming out of the court, said: “I killed Tej Bahadur because he refused to give a matchbox to me.”

The police also said that Babloo was involved in criminal cases in the past as well and a case was registered against him in the Mani Majra police station for allegedly confining and assaulting one Salim at New Indira Colony.

Police remand for impersonation accused

A local court remanded Arvind Goyal, accused in an impersonation case, in two-day police custody here today.

The crime branch of the UT police had arrested Goyal yesterday on charges on impersonating as a senior manager with Airtel and duping students on the pretext of getting them jobs. He was booked under Section 420 of the IPC. He was produced before the duty magistrate today.

Earlier, while seeking his police remand, the prosecution stated that it was to be investigated if there were more persons involved in the case and how many persons were actually duped by him.

According to the police, the accused used to take Rs 5,000 each from aspiring candidates as processing fee and give them appointment letters confirming jobs in Airtel.

In the process, he had also allegedly duped a placement agency asking them for candidates, conducted interviews and pocketed the amount from candidates.

He was found in possession of a fake identity card of Airtel, a letterhead of the company and other documents of the company.

Murder of ice-cream vendor
Accused sent to police remand

Lalit Sharma and Kuljinder Singh Saini, the two accused in a year-old case of murder of a 25-year-old ice-cream vendor, Sunil Kumar, were today remanded to three-day police remand by the local courts. The accused had beaten the victim to death at Phase VIII here on August 22, last year.

Disclosing details of the case, the SSP, Mohali, GPS Bhullar, said the blind murder had been solved by a team led by DSP Swarandeep Singh and Phase VIII SHO Atul Soni.

While Lalit was a son of the Haryana police ASI, Kuljinder was a taxi driver. On the day of the incident, Sunil was walking back home with his ‘rehri’ at Phase VIII when two motorcycle-borne persons allegedly attacked him. They attacked Sunil with sticks and rods and then sped away.

A retired Army officer, Abhijeet Shahi, reportedly saw the entire incident along with another person who knew the victim. They rushed him to Fortis from where he was shifted to the PGI.

Acting on a tip off, the police arrested the two accused and during their interrogation, they confessed to their crime. On August 21, Lalit had a fight with the ice-cream vendor and the latter hit him with a rod. The next day the accused cornered the vendor and took revenge. The police was looking for the third suspect.

12 booked for assaulting policemen

Around 12 persons, including two women were booked for allegedly assaulting Baltana police chowki in charge Gurwant Singh and three other constables at Ravindra Enclave here late last night.

The police had gone to the area after a shopkeeper had complained that the accused were assaulting his parents.

The accused were identified as Sunny Arora, Money Arora, Jai Kumar, Aarti Aroa, Veena Arora and seven others. While Jai Parkash, Aarti Aroa, Veena Arora were arrested, others were still absconding.

Gurwant sustained fracture in his right hand and was rushed to a civil hospital while two others were discharged after first aid.

The investigating officer said the incident took place around 10 pm when Sandeep Rana, owner of Rana Confectionery, complained that his family members were assaulted by Sunny and his friends. When he came to his shop with the police, the accused fled. Rana alleged that around 11 pm Aarti Arora, along with three youths, threatened him, but heated argument turned into battle ground.

According to police, his father asked Sunny to give back his chair but they started assaulting him. Sandeep again called up the Baltana police in charge, who reached the spot along with two constables. But the accused, who was allegedly drunken, beat up Gurwant and the two other constables, Major Singh and Satwinder Singh. The chowki in charge sustained a fracture in his right arm while two cops sustained minor injuries.

Meanwhile, Chandan Suri, president of phase I Ravindra Enclave, alleged that the accused also attacked him with sticks and stones while he was saving the police from the accused. He alleged they also threatened to kill him, if he approached the police.

Zirakpur SHO Sukhwinder Singh said a case had been registered against the accused and further investigations were on.

2 held with liquor on dry day

The police has arrested two persons with liquor on the dry day today. All the liquor shops were closed on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti today.

The police said that Bacha Ram, a resident of Hallo Majra, was carrying 10 bottles of country-made liquor near the Kabari Market, Hallo Majra. In another incident, police arrested one Pankaj of Ram Darbar from Hallo Majra and seized 12 bottles of country-made liquor from his possession.

Man, son held for murder bid

The police has booked four persons for attempt to murder on the complaint of Suraksha Rani, a resident of Shivalik Vihar, Nayagaon, here today. The accused were identified as Prem Kumar, husband of the victim, Sidharth, son of the victim, and two unidentified persons.

The investigating officer stated that Suraksha Rani alleged that on September 30, around 9.30 pm, she was sitting with her clients in her lawn when a door was knocked.

While opening the door she found that her husband and son were standing along with two unidentified persons. All were holding baseball bats while her son had a pistol, she claimed. Sidharath shot at her but she was saved by her client, she alleged. A case has been registered.

Narcotics seized

The local police has registered a case against Vijay Kumar, a prisoner at Burail jail, for possessing 1.7 gm charas yesterday.

A case under Section 18 of the NDPS Act has been registered at police station-34 in this connection.

Dowry

Shashi Rani, a resident of Kajheri village, lodged a complaint with the police alleging that her husband Ravinder Singh, father-in-law Jagdish Chander, mother-in-law Reshmi and brother-in-law Brij Mohan, all residents of Ram Darbar, had been harassing and maltreating her for dowry.

A case under Sections 406 and 488-A of the IPC has been registered at police station-36.

Hit-and-run case

A pedestrian, Rupinder Singh, resident of Sector 45, lodged a complaint with the police alleging that an unidentified vehicle hit him near Sector 34-45 trafficlights on the night of September 29. He received multiple injuries and was admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.

A case under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC has been registered at the police station-34.

Khalin wins junior golf title

Khalin Joshi from Bangalore fired birdies on the last two holes to topple tournament favourite Ashbeer Singh Saini from Kapurthala to clinch the overall title in the Usha Chandigarh Open Junior and Sub-junior Golf Championship on the par 72 greens of the Chandigarh Golf Club here today.

Saini who was leading by one stroke after the 16th hole bogeyed the 17th. Joshi sank a birdie to take a one-stroke lead. The Bangalore boy kept up his momentum sinking with another birdie on the 18th against Saini’s even par to clinch the title by a two-stroke margin.

Joshi finished with a final tally of nine over 297 (78-72-76-71) with Saini finishing two strokes behind at 299 (75-76-73-75).

Akriti Singh clinched the overall title in the girls' section carding a final day card of four over 76 for a final three-round tally of 28 over 244 (88-80-76) with Ankit Tiwana finishing four strokes behind at 248.

Honey Basoya won the category B (13 to 15 years) title with the girls’ crown going to Gurbani Singh.

Chandigarh’s Feroz Singh Garewal emerged winner in the category C (11 to 13 years) with a 32 over 320 score. Piyush Sangwan finished three strokes behind at 323. Aditi Ashok was the winner in the girls’ section.

City’s Karandeep Kochhar fired yet another round of 84 to clinch the under-11 (category D) title finishing with a final score of 41 over 257. Karandeep was far ahead of the field. His nearest rival was eight-year-old Aadil Bedi, also from Chandigarh, who finished 12 strokes behind at 269.

Tarannam Bali played a 104 over 320 for the category D title among girls with Riya Ahuja finishing seven strokes behind.

Chandigarh Golf Club vice-president AS Garewal gave away the prizes.

Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, won the Panjab University Inter-College Netball (Men) Championship here yesterday.

While, Panjab University campus, GGDSD College, Sector 32, and SCD Government College, Ludhiana, secured second, third and fourth positions, respectively.

Results: SGGS College, Sector 26, thrashed PU campus by 29-21 in the final match.

GGDSD College, Sector 32, defeated SCD Government College, Ludhiana, by 31-18.

In the first semifinal match of the Panjab University Netball (Women) Championship, GGS College for Women, Sector 26, thrashed MCM DAV College, Sector 36, (44-18) at PU grounds here today.

In the second semifinal, PU campus defeated Government College of Girls, Sector 11, by 46-24.

Results:

GGS College for Women beat Dev Samaj College for Women, Sector 45, by 39-03.

In the second match, Government College of Girls, Sector 11, defeated Ramgarhia Girls’ College, Ludhiana, by 34-15.

MCM DAV win championship

Fine batting by Simarjit Kaur (45) and Aakriti (33 not out) helped MCM DAV College to score a win against Panjab University campus in the final match of the Panjab University Inter-College Cricket (Women) Championship held at Panjab University grounds here today.

MCM players scored 130 for all out in 42.5 overs. Harshita and Ankita, both from PU campus, took four and three wickets for PU campus.

In reply, Panjab University players were bundled out at 89 all out in 27.1 overs. Ankita 25 and Harshita 17 were the main scorers of Panjab University. Hema and Preeti took five wickets for 17 and three wickets for 13, respectively, for MCM College.

In the second match played between Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector 26, and Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, Khalsa College won the match by 10 wickets.

Meanwhile, Panjab University campus, Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, and GGS College for Women, Chandigarh, got the second, third and fourth positions, respectively.

Sahil fashions BTS academy win

A dashing knock by Sahil, 86 not out, enabled the BTS Cricket Academy to beat School Sports, Australia, by six wickets in a T-20 cricket match of the third edition of the Commonwealth Cricket Series, which held at BTS Public School, Sector 48, here today.

The School Sports, Australia, won the toss and elected to bat first.

School Sports, Australia, scored 162 for 9 in 20 overs (Dylan Quirk 83, Ravi Kumar 3/29, Vikrant 2/14).

BTS Cricket Academy scored 164 for four in 19 overs (Sahil 86 not out, Nitesh 24).

The Panchkula Cricket Stadium Coaching Centre thrashed Hansraj Cricket Academy by a huge margin of 111 runs in the opening match of the first Under-14 Inter-Academy Khan Chand Khurana League Cricket Tournament for Reebok Cup being organised by Hansraj Cricket Academy, Panchkula, played at Hansraj Public School cricket ground here today.

Shivam Bhambri of the Panchkula Cricket Stadium Coaching Centre was declared as man of the match for his wonderful batting of 87 runs in 58 balls with three sixes and 11 fours.

HDFC Bank defeat Glacier Enterprises

A fine all-round display by Madan Lal (three wickets for 11 and 44) enabled the HDFC Bank XI to defeat Glacier Enterprises by 30 runs in the opening match of the Fourth MG Cup League Cricket Tournament being organised by the Chandigarh Sports Club at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, here today.

The HDFC Bank-XI batted first and suffered some early jolts, as they lost their first wicket on the second ball of the match itself, when Inder Singh bowled AP Singh.

However, Gurinder Saini played a useful innings and partnered with Madan Lal to build a useful partnership of 82 runs in 12 overs.

Madan Lal made 44 off just 37 balls. His innings included seven boundaries and a six. Both these batsmen fell in quick succession. Barinder and other batsmen held onto their wickets long enough to get their team to a comfortable total of 159 runs in 24.3 overs. Bharat Sharma bagged three for 30.

In reply, the Glacier Enterprises were off to a good start, as Ricky Singh and Chanchal partnered to get their team to 50 runs in just nine overs. Ricky Singh went on to make 45 valuable runs in 50 balls. The batsmen managed to hold onto their wickets but in the process the asking run rate mounted and Glacier fell behind the target by 30 runs. Madan Lal bagged three for 11 as Glacier-XI could muster only 129 for eight in 25 overs.

HDFC Bank XI: 159 all out in 24.3 overs (Madan Lal 44, Gurinder Saini 29, Bharat Sharma 3 for 20).

In the second match of the day, Sigma-XI Mohali recorded a comfortable seven-wicket win over the ICICI Bank XI. Batting first after winning the toss, ICICI were bowled out for 108 runs in 24.3 overs. Parminder Singh (three for 17) and Jaswinder (three for eight) were the pick of the bowlers. Geetesh scored 37 off 37 balls.

In reply, the Sigma-XI batsmen got to the total with ease. The target was reached in 17.3 overs with seven wickets in hand. Sanjay Jain was the highest scorer with 35 runs. Balwinder bagged two for 22.

Mukul clinches gold medal

Mukul of St Soldier International School clinched the gold medal in the up to six-year category of the North India Open Inter-School and Seniors Karate-do Championship, which was held at St Soldier School, Sector 28, here today.

The silver medal was also gone in favour of St Soldier School through Aryan Anand. While, Sachet Walia of St John's School claimed a bronze medal. — TNS
