Swine Flu
Ambala, October 2 Questions have been raised over her death, the first being how did she contract swine flu when she had been in the hostel for over a month and not gone anywhere. Also, there were allegations of delay or carelessness in providing medical care to the girl. The district administration has also taken strict measures to control the spread of swine flu in the district. Six teams of doctors will assist the team in the district. Centres will be set up to take samples at all four subdivisions along with two centres in the rural area. All primary and community health centres have been ordered to remain open for 24 hours to address any complaints of flu-like symptoms. The district administration has also sought assistance from the Military Hospital, Ambala Cantonment, and Mullana Medical College in case of emergency. “We have requested them for the use of emergency services like ventilators,” said Deputy Commissioner Sameer Pal Srow. Meanwhile, all schools have been given a proforma wherein they have to maintain the daily record of its students’ health. An additional isolation ward with ten beds has also been set up at the trauma centre in Ambala City. |

Punjab govt not utilising central funds: Preneet
Patiala, October 2 Interacting with mediapersons after inaugurating a computer training centre set up by Kishan Chand Goyal Memorial and Charitable Trust at Nabha Gate this morning, Preneet Kaur said the Central Government had been making huge grants to the Punjab government for strengthening of infrastructure. This included funds for six-laning and four-laning of highways. However, many such grants were not being properly utilised by the Punjab government and in some cases, these were getting lapsed. The MP said she had taken up with the union health minister an ambitious plan for upgrade of the Government Rajindra Hospital here to the level of the PGI, Chandigarh. She had also taken up the matter of setting up of a super-speciality centre at Rajindra Hospital and the union government had set up a committee under the chairmanship of Dr KK Talwar, PGI director. However, the state government was throwing the spanner in the execution of the project. She lauded the initiative of the Kishan Chand Memorial and Charitable Trust in setting up a computer training centre for children from the downtrodden section of the society. She called upon other social and voluntary organisations to emulate the example, which would go a long way in training youth for taking up technical jobs. |

Patiala, October 2 The University Grants Commission (UGC) has sanctioned Rs 5 lakh for purchasing equipment, conducting seminars, workshops, short-term courses, and carrying out community outreach programmes at the centre. The centre is aimed at raising gender consciousness, motivating them into the process of thinking and reflecting on the crucial issues of day-to-day life. Expressing concern over the skewed sex raio, Dr Jaspal Singh said all the 17 districts of the state have low sex ratio. New hostel soon: VC Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Dr Jaspal Singh said a new girls hostel was being readied on priority and all the existing ones were in the process of being furnished to ensure safety, security and comfort of students. Addressing students, he said said all the hostels were being equipped with wi-fi system and other infrastructure for conducive atmosphere for studies. Indira Colony Murder
Chandigarh, October 2 Babloo was arrested yesterday and was produced before duty magistrate Mahesh Kumar today. He is charged with murdering Tej Bahadur, alias Kallu, of Indira Colony following a brawl recently. Following the murder, major violence sparked off in the colony after the crowd ran amok and some miscreants also tried to play up the whole incident as a communal outburst. Requesting for the police remand for five days, the prosecution stated in court that it was to be ascertained that from where the bayonet, which the accused used for stabbing the victim, was sourced from and whether he also possesses a rifle. Showing no signs of remorse, Babloo, after coming out of the court, said: “I killed Tej Bahadur because he refused to give a matchbox to me.” The police also said that Babloo was involved in criminal cases in the past as well and a case was registered against him in the Mani Majra police station for allegedly confining and assaulting one Salim at New Indira Colony. |

Police remand for impersonation accused
Chandigarh, October 2 The crime branch of the UT police had arrested Goyal yesterday on charges on impersonating as a senior manager with Airtel and duping students on the pretext of getting them jobs. He was booked under Section 420 of the IPC. He was produced before the duty magistrate today. Earlier, while seeking his police remand, the prosecution stated that it was to be investigated if there were more persons involved in the case and how many persons were actually duped by him. According to the police, the accused used to take Rs 5,000 each from aspiring candidates as processing fee and give them appointment letters confirming jobs in Airtel. In the process, he had also allegedly duped a placement agency asking them for candidates, conducted interviews and pocketed the amount from candidates. He was found in possession of a fake identity card of Airtel, a letterhead of the company and other documents of the company. |

Murder
of ice-cream vendor
Mohali, October 2 Disclosing details of the case, the SSP, Mohali, GPS Bhullar, said the blind murder had been solved by a team led by DSP Swarandeep Singh and Phase VIII SHO Atul Soni. While Lalit was a son of the Haryana police ASI, Kuljinder was a taxi driver. On the day of the incident, Sunil was walking back home with his ‘rehri’ at Phase VIII when two motorcycle-borne persons allegedly attacked him. They attacked Sunil with sticks and rods and then sped away. A retired Army officer, Abhijeet Shahi, reportedly saw the entire incident along with another person who knew the victim. They rushed him to Fortis from where he was shifted to the PGI. Acting on a tip off, the police arrested the two accused and during their interrogation, they confessed to their crime. On August 21, Lalit had a fight with the ice-cream vendor and the latter hit him with a rod. The next day the accused cornered the vendor and took revenge. The police was looking for the third suspect. |

12 booked for assaulting policemen
Zirakpur, October 2 The police had gone to the area after a shopkeeper had complained that the accused were assaulting his parents. The accused were identified as Sunny Arora, Money Arora, Jai Kumar, Aarti Aroa, Veena Arora and seven others. While Jai Parkash, Aarti Aroa, Veena Arora were arrested, others were still absconding. Gurwant sustained fracture in his right hand and was rushed to a civil hospital while two others were discharged after first aid. The investigating officer said the incident took place around 10 pm when Sandeep Rana, owner of Rana Confectionery, complained that his family members were assaulted by Sunny and his friends. When he came to his shop with the police, the accused fled. Rana alleged that around 11 pm Aarti Arora, along with three youths, threatened him, but heated argument turned into battle ground. According to police, his father asked Sunny to give back his chair but they started assaulting him. Sandeep again called up the Baltana police in charge, who reached the spot along with two constables. But the accused, who was allegedly drunken, beat up Gurwant and the two other constables, Major Singh and Satwinder Singh. The chowki in charge sustained a fracture in his right arm while two cops sustained minor injuries. Meanwhile, Chandan Suri, president of phase I Ravindra Enclave, alleged that the accused also attacked him with sticks and stones while he was saving the police from the accused. He alleged they also threatened to kill him, if he approached the police. Zirakpur SHO Sukhwinder Singh said a case had been registered against the accused and further investigations were on. |

Khalin wins junior golf title
Chandigarh, October 2 Saini who was leading by one stroke after the 16th hole bogeyed the 17th. Joshi sank a birdie to take a one-stroke lead. The Bangalore boy kept up his momentum sinking with another birdie on the 18th against Saini’s even par to clinch the title by a two-stroke margin. Joshi finished with a final tally of nine over 297 (78-72-76-71) with Saini finishing two strokes behind at 299 (75-76-73-75). Akriti Singh clinched the overall title in the girls' section carding a final day card of four over 76 for a final three-round tally of 28 over 244 (88-80-76) with Ankit Tiwana finishing four strokes behind at 248. Chandigarh, October 2 The HDFC Bank-XI batted first and suffered some early jolts, as they lost their first wicket on the second ball of the match itself, when Inder Singh bowled AP Singh. However, Gurinder Saini played a useful innings and partnered with Madan Lal to build a useful partnership of 82 runs in 12 overs. Madan Lal made 44 off just 37 balls. His innings included seven boundaries and a six. Both these batsmen fell in quick succession. Barinder and other batsmen held onto their wickets long enough to get their team to a comfortable total of 159 runs in 24.3 overs. Bharat Sharma bagged three for 30. In reply, the Glacier Enterprises were off to a good start, as Ricky Singh and Chanchal partnered to get their team to 50 runs in just nine overs.
