Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, September 30
With the seizure of two-quintal spurious milk, the Health Department at Hoshiarpur today has claimed to unearth an interstate gang of spurious milk manufacturers and suppliers.

According to Dr S.K. Gupta, Civil Surgeon, Hoshiarpur, acting on a tip-off a team of Health Department, led by the District Health Officer Yash Mitra raided a dairy at Dalewal village, located on the border of Himachal Pradesh in Garhshankar sub-division, and seized two quintals of spurious milk from there. The owner of the dairy is Ishwar Dass of Balkwah village, Tehsil Haroli, district Una (HP).

When the raiding party reached the dairy premises, some milk vendors of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh were taking milk for sale. As many as seven samples of milk, cream and desi ghee had been procured from Ishwar Dass and some vendors Kehar Singh of Heera Nagar, Dulher, Chanan Singh of Haroli, Hari Singh of Mukhowal, Sohan Singh of Corddiwal and Joginder Pal of Binewal. The samples had been sent to Public Analyst, Chandigarh for testing.

Dr Gupta said members of the gang used to collect milk from the villages located on the border of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. After abstracting cream from the milk at the above said dairy, they mixed similar quantity of water and two kg of milk powder in it. This spurious milk was being sold in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab from Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg in the present festival season. Desi ghee was being prepared from the abstracted cream.

NRI was shot in head: Post-mortem report
Bipin Bhardwaj/TNS

Jalandhar, September 30
The finding of a bullet in the skull of the NRI businessman, who was found dead outside Hotel Country Inn on Sunday, during a post-mortem examination has once again raised doubts about the competency of the district police.

The police had earlier initiated inquest proceeding without going into details of the mysterious death of Charanjit Singh (44), resident of Atalgarh village in Hoshiarpur. Interestingly, the police did not find any wound or injury marks on the body of the UK-based NRI. The police seized his personal documents, Rs 5,690, 340 pounds and a mobile phone from his pocket.

The body was later sent to the Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination. The doctors extricated a bullet from the skull, following which the police registered a case of murder. The police has failed to make any headway in the case even after two days.

Charanjit Singh arrived in the country with his wife Tajinder Kaur and a daughter almost a month back and was in the city to attend the marriage party of a Jalandhar-based woman SDM on Sunday, family members revealed. Tajinder Kaur came to know about the death of her husband from on Monday morning. Efforts to contact the SP, City-II, Sarabjit Singh, proved futile. Sources in the police, however, revealed that the police had been working on various theories to nab the assailants.

Khaira protests reinstatement of tainted SI

Jalandhar, September 30
Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira has written to DGP P.S. Gill protesting the posting of a controversial police official at Begowal due to the efforts a senior Akali leader.

In his letter, the legislator has said that SI Gurmukh Singh had been suspended after his role in the alleged custodial death of Aroor Singh, a resident of Nurpur Jattan village, on the night of September 5 in Dhilwan police station in Kapurthala district.

Hundreds of people had come out on the roads to protest against the death, besides demanding strict action against the guilty police officials. Subsequently, the SSP suspended Gurmukh Singh on September 7. A judicial inquiry was still pending in the case, he pointed out. “I have learnt that SI Gurmukh Singh has not only been reinstated but has also been posted as SHO at Begowal police station where he had remained SHO earlier for over 18 months. All this has been done under political pressure from former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur,” he alleged. — TNS

Diploma engineers to raise demands before CM
Tribune News service

Pathankot, September 30
The All-India Federation of Diploma Engineers will take up their unaccepted demands with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal so that injustice being done to them at various levels could be undone.

Federation chairman Satnam Singh Dhanoa said here today that a delegates’ session would be held on October 24 at Chandigarh and its demand would be raised before Badal who would preside over it.

He alleged that the authorities concerned had been denying them increment in their salaries after completion of 24 and 32 years of services under assured career progression (ACP) scheme. Not only this, the junior engineers were not being promoted to the rank of assistant engineer after completion of eight years of service despite the fact that it was promised to them by Badal in the year 2000.

He said junior engineers were given 25 % quota in matter of promotion despite the fact that Badal promised that their quota in promotion would be 30 per cent. In the recommendations of the Fifth Pay panel, a wide gap had been made between their pay scales and those officials who were at same level and in this way the junior engineers had been discriminated against.
