Cloth merchant found murdered in Mohali
Kharar, September 17 Tiwari was found killed mercilessly near Badh Majra village. People living around the village spotted the body lying on the bed of a dried river around 7 am and informed the Balongi police. The victim was brutally done to death with his skull wide open. The police arrested a woman, Manisha Jha, and her husband Mintu Jha for the murder. On visiting the crime spot, the police found few visiting cards, a wallet, a pocket telephone directory, registration copy of a motorcycle and Rs 3,000 cash in the deceased’s pocket. Also three pairs of slippers were found from the spot. The deceased’s helmet lay few feet away from his body full of blood. The cops extricated driving licence from the wallet that identified the deceased. In the directory, the police found the phone number of Manoj Tiwari, a resident of the Darhwa area near Chandigarh railway station, and called him up. Manoj told the police that Anjan was his brother. Anjan had been missing since last night and his family had been looking for him at various hospitals and police stations for whole night. In his statement to the Kharar police, Manoj stated that his brother was carrying around Rs 1.5 lakh to contribute for a kitty. “He was supposed to leave for Delhi this morning to buy some garments for the forthcoming festive season,” he said. Anjan was travelling on a motorcycle, which too was found missing. Later, the police followed the call records of Anjan’s mobile phone and zeroed in on Manisha’s number. Manisha had called up Anjan asking him to meet her near Badh Majra village. When Anjan reached the spot, Manisha got him engaged in conversation while Mintu hit him from behind and clubbed him to death. SSP Jatinder Aulakh said both the accused took away Anjan’s motorcycle and hid the sharp edged weapon with which they killed Anjan. As per the police, Anjan and Manisha had an illicit relation. He had been frequenting her place in her husband Mintu’s absence. Mintu returned few days ago and got to know about the relation. He then planned to kill Anjan. |

Three-storeyed building collapses
Ambala, September 17 According to the owner of the house, Rajiv Maini, cracks had appeared on one side of the building early in the morning and it turned into pieces within a few hours. All family members had already vacated the house. Nobody was present in the building when it fell. Maini said he could not even take out his furniture, TV and other valuables. He said he was ruined as he had lost everything. He alleged that the building had collapsed as the sewerage of his house was choked for the last few months and the Housing Board Authority did not take notice of it after his repeated complaints. He said the water logging in the area had also played a major role in it. The residents of the locality blockade the road to protest against the incident. Some of the leaders of political parties also joined them. Former INLD MLA Jasbir Malore and other party leaders Balwinder Punia and Balinder Singh Landa sat on the middle of the road and raised slogans against the Congress government. HJC workers led by Puran Prakash Saini also reached there. They demanded compensation for the victim family. SDM, Ambala, Ashwani Sharma rushed at the spot and persuaded the agitated crowd. He immediately arranged a JCB machine and a fire brigade to clear the debris. The SDM also visited various streets of the sector to check water logging. He said no water logging was noticed in the sector. He also met Rajiv Maini and his mother and assured them that he would bring their loss in the notice of the Deputy Commissioner. He assured Maini a probe would also be conducted into the matter. |

Govt schoolteacher accused of embezzling funds

/Ropar, September 17 As per the protocol, Bhupinder Singh is likely to be charge sheeted and suspended for the misconduct. After the gram panchayat of Dhruk village complained ADC (development) about embezzlement of funds by Bhupinder Singh, ADC Manishvi Kumar marked an inquiry to the block development official of Anandpur Sahib. An inquiry revealed that gram panchayat had rightly made allegations against Bhupinder Singh. The
mid-day meal scheme was lying suspended for the last two years. In addition to this, SC/ST students at the school were not given any stipend or free books. Villagers had also alleged there had been new admissions in the school. They alleged that Bhupinder Singh, who joined the school in December 2007, was responsible for the misconduct. They added that the ration and funds were being tampered with. Sources said the matter came to light when a newly appointed teacher refused to be hand-in-glove with the old erring teacher. (SSA) Krishan Kumar marked an inquiry to Ropar district SSA manager Hajara Singh. However, as the school does not directly fall under the
SSA, the director-general schools wrote to the zila parishad recommending strict action against the erring teacher. Meanwhile, ADC (D) Manishvi Kumar said by Friday the administration would decide its future course of action. “The action will be an example for others to inhibit them from repeating such mistakes,” he added. |

One killed, 3 hurt in group clash
Morinda, September 17 Fateh had an old enmity with a group in his Thablan village over the issue of four acres of land in village. Around a week too ago, the same groups have clashed and Fateh’s younger brother had got injured in firing incident. He was admitted to Government Hospital, Sector 32, in Chandigarh, from where he managed to flee away. Today, Fateh Singh had gone to Fatehgarh Sahib courts to attend some hearing. On their way back, Fateh’s group stopped at a dhaba for refreshment, when suddenly the other group opened fire. Fateh Singh died on the spot. Graft case against 2 cops Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, September 17 As the case came up for hearing before the court of Darshan Singh, the SSP appeared in the case and stated that he approved the sanction granted to prosecute SI Dewan Singh and constable Jasbir Singh in a graft case pertaining to 2008. The two had been discharged in the case in January, 2009, as it was pointed out that the CBI had not taken the required sanction for prosecution from the authorities concerned. The CBI then procured a sanction in the case and filed a fresh charge-sheet on April 19. After filing a fresh charge-sheet, charges were framed against them. The CBI special court had framed charges of criminal conspiracy under Sections 7, 13 (1), 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and 120 B of the IPC against UT police sub-inspector Dewan Singh and constable Jasbir Singh. The CBI sleuths had arrested sub-inspector Dewan Singh, in-charge of police post-61, and constable Jasbir Singh red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 on April 25, 2008. The two had demanded the money from an accused, Prem Singh, in an electricity theft case of Kajheri village. CBI sources said Dewan Singh had demanded the money from Prem Singh to help him evade his arrest. It was agreed that Prem Singh would send his man to the police post at 10 pm with the money. The CBI laid a trap and arrested the in-charge of the police post along with the constable, who was also in the know of the deal and was present at the police post. |

Rape charges framed against three
Chandigarh, September 17 The court of additional district and session judge, Ravi Kumar Sondhi today framed charges against three accused Jagtar Singh, Vinod and Gurnam Singh for allegedly raping a woman of Kishangarh village on April 21 in a moving car before dumping her near Leisure Valley, Sector 10. Incidentally the chargesheet was committed today only and the charges were framed today itself. The accused were booked under sections 376,364,34 IPC.The court has fixed October 16 as the next date of hearing. It must be mentioned here that the accused had allegedly picked up the woman, wife of the business partner of one of the accused in Kishangarh and was allegedly raped in a moving car. The police had later arrested Jagtar Singh alias Kaka. It was only after his arrest that the other two could be arrested. The victim had alleged in her complaint that she was picked up from the village on the evening of April 20 after she was forced to inhale some anaesthetic and was raped. One accused Kaka Singh is a partner with her husband in property dealing business. The accused reportedly informed her husband about her location. A case of kidnapping, illegal confinement, rape and criminal intimidation has been registered on the victim’s complaint after she was medically examined. |

Panchkula, September 17 While issuing notice to the police for September 23, District and Sessions Judge SP Singh granted interim bail to a Panchkula resident, Vinay Kumar, along with prime suspects Rajesh Thapar and Brijesh
Kapoor, both residents of Delhi and Gurgaon, respectively. Vinay, who runs a printing press, was friend of Sagar while Thapar and Kapoor had business dealings with him. Pleading before the court the petitioners said while missing property dealer Deepak Rai Sagar had gone in hiding to evade his liabilities regarding borrowings, the police was unable to recover any incriminating thing from them despite the fact they had joined the investigation and cooperated with the police during the last three months. Bail plea of PUSU leader dismissed
Chandigarh, September 17 The court of additional district and sessions judge Raj Rahul Garg today dismissed the bail plea of Harkaml Singh Multani, a PUSU student leader, who was allegedly involved in a brawl that took place recently, leaving one student injured and resulting in firing at the college parking place. The police on the complaint of Praveen, the injured member of SOPU, had arrested Simranjit Singh Dhillon, president, PUSU, and a student of the PGGC, Sector 11, and Gurjeet from the spot. A case was registered against the duo and Tejpal Cheema, Harkamal Multani and Simrandeep Sandhu for rioting, causing injuries and criminal intimidation under Sections 307, 147, 148, 149, 323 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code and under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act. The police had recovered two shells even as the eyewitnesses claimed that at least four rounds were fired in the air. |

Two acquitted in murder case
Panchkula, September 17 Deepak and Manoj, both working at an iron factory in Nalagarh, were arrested on January 5 for the murder of Suresh, another factory worker at Nalagarh, whose body was found at Madhawala village on December 26 last year. Another accused, Suman, is already declared a proclaimed offender. According to FIR, Deepak, Manoj, Suman and Suresh were friends and on the night of December 25 last year, during a drinking session, they reportedly had a fight over distribution of Rs 100 spent on the liquor and the accused killed Suresh, hitting him with stones. His body was found lying near a stone crusher on the Pinjore-Kalka National Highway. |

Man crushed to death
Chandigarh, September 17 According to the police, though the mishap occurred around 11.30 am, no eyewitness was found, who could give details about the vehicle involved in the mishap. The victim reportedly died on the spot. The victim, apparently a migrant labourer, was carrying bag. No document, which could help in identifying the victim, was found on the body. Lalit Batra of Zirakpur reported to the police, alleging that driver of a truck (HR-24-8421) sped away after hitting his car near Hallo Majra Light Point on Wednesday. He further alleged that the truck driver had thrashed him after the mishap. A case has been registered.
Liquor seized
The police arrested Desa Singh of Taran Taaran from near crossing on road separating Sectors 44 and 45 in the wee hours today while carrying 198 bottles of whisky in his Maruti Zen car (PB-02-AY-9954). A case in the Excise Act has been registered.
Stolen
Kamlesh Rana of Sector 22-A reported that someone had stolen his scooter (CH-03-N-6919) from near gurdwara in Sector 20 on Wednesday. A case of theft has been registered.
Misappropriation
Mohammad Itris of Manimajra reported that Umesh Mishra of Panchkula had taken his motorcycle (CH-23-T-7723) in July last year and sold it. A case of misappropriation has been registered in this regard.

Zirakpur, September 17 The Zirkapur police had booked the couple on the charges of murder yesterday. The couple ran a tea stall at Kalka chowk on the
Zirakpur-Kalka highway. SHO, Rajpura City, stated that the accused had been traced from the IMEI number of their mobile phone and were handed over to Zirakpur police. Balwinder Singh was posted at Security Wing of Punjab Police Headquarters, Chandigarh, as a driver. He was a resident of Rajpura and living with his wife and children. He was missing from Rajpura and matter was reported at Rajpura city. On September 3, Balwinder was found in an unconscious condition on the Choice road, Baltana, and was admitted at the GMCH-32, Chandigarh, where he died on September 4. |

Chandigarh, September 17 Their openers Rahul Diwan and Gurinder Saini sent the board’s bowlers for a leather hunt and amassed 248 runs before Gurinder Saini was bowled by Nilesh Kulkarni for a well-made 126 runs off 138 balls. This was the first 200-run partnership for any wicket in the 16-year-old history of the tournament. Nitin Saini then joined Rahul Diwan and the two carried the score to 279, when Rahul was caught by Kiran Singh off the bowling of Rishi Sharma for 123 in 117 balls. Nitin scored 40 off 28 balls before he was caught by Ankur Jund off the bowling of P Mukerjee. The LIC innings ended at 335 for 3 in 50 overs. In reply, All-India Electricity Sports Control Board scored 315 runs in 50 overs. With this win by 20 runs, LIC Cricket Club logged four points.
