Protest by food inspectors
Ludhiana, September 10
Inspectors of the food and supplies department held a protest here today in support of their demands. They also said the state government was making them a “scapegoat” on several issues.

Auction deferred yet again

The auction of a cycle stand and parking lot at New Sabzi Mandi in Salem Tabri failed to take place this morning due to unconfirmed reports of shifting of the sabzi mandi to a new location later this year. The reserve price of the cycle stand and parking lot for a year had been fixed at Rs 1.10 crore.

6,500 pirated CDs confiscated

The police conducted a raid at Mata Rani Chowk and confiscated 6,500 pirated CDs here today. The police nabbed the man dealing in pirated CDs and booked him under the Copy Rights Act. The raided was conducted on the basis of a complaint by a Jalandhar resident, Ramesh Lakhanpal, owner of the Film and Folk Copy Right Service.

City Concerns
The recent hike in power tariff by 17.5 per cent for the domestic sector by the Punjab State Electricity Board has affected the common man. Besides, the hike has been implemented from back date and is being termed as unjustified by people. Summer has already been cruel to residents due to power cuts. And even after suffering long hours without power, they would have to pay arrears of electricity bills from April. Is that right?

Govt backed out of diesel subsidy: Tewari
Ludhiana, September 10
Call it inefficiency or lack of will and concern for farmers of the state that the Punjab government has backed out of a Central government scheme to provide 50 per cent subsidy on diesel to farmers for irrigation purposes. This was stated here today by Manish Tewari, MP. He said in order to provide relief to drought-hit farmers of the state, the Central government had proposed subsidy on diesel for irrigation purposes.

Attack on farmers, PSEB staff condemned

The BSNL Employees Union today condemned the lathicharge on agitating employees of PSEB and activists of farmers’ organisations in Chandigarh on Tuesday. They said the proposed unbundling of the state electricity board and handing the institution to private companies would put additional burden on common man, as well as on farmers, who were already passing through tough times due to poor monsoon, rising prices and global recession.

Construction on Lakkar bridge by Dec
Ludhiana, September 10
The work on motorable railway overbridge (ROB) in place of the dismantled overbridge (Lakkar Pul) will start by December and both the northern Railway and the executing agency of the project — State Public Works Department (PWD) - will resume the work, which is expected to complete in 18 months, this was stated by divisional railway manager (DRM) Satish Chandra while talking to mediapersons here last evening.

A woman was mowed down by an unidentified truck last night. The woman identified as Giano Devi (45), was returning home at Kothe Rahlan village near here on her bicycle, when an unidentified truck hit her and crushed her head under its tyres.

Newly married woman ends life

A newly married woman allegedly committed suicide under mysterious circumstances by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at Behla village last night. The victim has been identified as Gagandeep Kaur (20), who was married to Lakhwinder Singh, a resident of Behla, 10 months ago.

Suicide by teenager
Mullanpur Dakha, September 10
A teenager of nearby Bhatha Dua village has reportedly committed suicide by swallowing some poisonous substance. The victim identified as Sukhraj Singh, a student of Class XII at Government Senior Secondary School, Humbran, took this extreme step under depression.
