A family treasures holy relics of Sikh Gurus
In Bhai Roopa-a village in Rampura Phul sub-division of Bathinda district- live 12th generation descendants of Bhai Roop Chand, who have with them holy relics of Sikh Gurus. The village is named after Bhai Roop Chand. It said sixth Sikh Guru Hargobind Sahib laid the foundation of Bhai Roopa in 1687 Bikrami (1630 AD) after his follower Bhai Roop Chand’s name. Later, Guru Hargobind Sahib, impressed by the devotion of Roop Chand and his family, honoured him with the title of ‘Bhai’ (brother) and made him in charge of spiritual welfare of the Malwa region. Bhai Roop Chand and his family also served seventh Sikh Guru Teg Bahadur and 10th Sikh Master Guru Gobind Singh. Bhai Roop Chand and his seven sons were baptised by 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh and they enlisted themselves in the Guru’s ‘Army of Lions’.
Showing the relics, Bhai Gurchet Singh, 12th generation descendant of Bhai Roop Chand said for service to the Gurus’ families, they had ‘Hukamnamas, edicts from the Gurus, which, besides asking for men, money and military hardware, the Guru acknowledged Bhai Roop’s family as his own family. The family possesses a rabab, wooden shoes of Guru Arjan Dev, one ‘khadawan’ (wooden shoes) of Mata Ganga (wife of Guru Arjan Dev), some paintings of Guru Sahib’s era including one of Guru Gobind Singh’s childhood. They have preserved Mohrhi Sahib, foundation of the village. Old ‘chulhas’ used to prepare langar, bairagans, utensils, hand written literature, including one signed by Guru Gobind Singh , a sword, rumala (handkerchief), old chowki and other articles are with the family. The family also has a chariot (rath). The house, where it is parked is called as Rath Sahib gurdwara. People from across the country pay obeisance here. About the chariot, Bhai Gurchet Singh said, “Khuda Bakhsh, a Kashmiri carpenter, on is wish for a son granted, prepared the chariot for fourth Sikh master Guru Ramdas. Later, Guru Arjun Dev had the chariot and on it Mata Ganga went to Baba Budda to seek the blessing of a son. The same chariot was used by Guru Hargobind Sahib and seventh Sikh master Guru Har Rai Sahib. After Ram Rai, son of Guru Har Rai made the mistake and changed a sloka on his own, was debarred from Guruship, he had settled at Dehra Dun and used this chariot to travel. It came to be known ‘flying chariot’ because it is said Ram Rai used to fly it using supernatural powers. On request from Mata Punjab Kaur, wife of Ram Rai, this chariot was brought by Bhai Gian Chand, grandson of Bhai Roop Chand , from Dehra Dun for safe keeping. Today it is in Bhai Roopa. People come and cover it with colourful cloth when their wishes are granted. The family exhibits holy relics at heritage fairs organised at different places.
