Abohar
Jakhar to meet Sonia
: The way the state government had exhausted Rs 8 crore, out of Rs 22 crore, sanctioned by the Central government to streamline the canal system in the region, indicates the rest of the money too might be usurped, fears legislator Sunil Jakhar. The SAD-BJP activists were allegedly vying to misuse the NREGA funds at the cost of the eligible persons. Fearing that the state government might misappropriate a major chunk of Rs 1,400 crore that is to be released for remodelling and renovation of Sarhind Feeder and Rajasthan Canal, Jakhar said he will be visiting New Delhi to apprise UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi soon of the evil designs of the SAD-BJP activists and their favourite officials. "We cannot tolerate gross misuse of the Central funds,” Jakhar said.

Jal Ghar inaugurated: SDM Amit Dhaka inaugurated the 'Jal Ghar' in the sub-divisional complex here recently. The same had been renovated by Bharat Vikas Parishad (BVP), an NGO, that was also running a similar facility at the municipal bus stand and bazaar number 4.

ABGP seeks new ration cards
: The Akhil Bhartiya Grahak Panchayat (ABGP), Punjab demanded issuing of new ration cards to the fair price shop consumers in the state. In a letter to the Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Hamuman Dass Goel, zonal executive member of the panchayat, stated that entries in the cards issued some 12-13 years ago had lost its relevance due to several reasons and had become a source of irregularities and misuse of cards. He said that issuing of fresh cards would check black marketing of kerosene and would also result in delivering of kerosene to genuine consumers.

Undertrial flees from custody: An undertrial, Bhupinder Singh, who is facing murder charges, escaped from the police custody from the court campus in Phul on Saturday. He brought here to be produced before a court. Police said a case has been registered against Bhupinder in this connection. It may be mentioned that it is second such case in the district in a week.

Land for charitable health institutions
: The Punjab government has finalised the draft policy to allot land for charitable health institutions in the state. A decision in this regard was taken at a high-level meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here late on Friday evening. Taking part in the brainstorming session, Badal made it clear that these institutions must be made liable to provide free quality health service to the poor under BPL category, blue card holders and persons earning Rs 5,000 per month or less. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the CM's office said as per the policy, PUDA, development authorities, municipal committees, Improvement Trusts, local government and panchayats would allot land in small cities and towns to the non- profitable and charitable health institutions/trusts and companies.

Quality of water: All villages of the Ferozepur, Bathinda, Faridkot, Mansa, Muktsar districts and a stretch of Majha region, having salinity in ground water, are set to have Reverse Osmosis (RO) or ultra filtration plants within 21 months. Deputy CMSukhbir Singh Badal has issued instructions to this effect to solve the age-old problem of this region. Presiding over the review meeting of the Water Supply and Sanitation Department, he asked secretary, Water Supply, to coordinate with the Health Department and form a multidisciplinary high-level committee to examine the quality of water in these areas. 

Cattle fair grounds: The Punjab government has decided to upgrade all 50 cattle fair grounds in the state by providing more basic amenities. In the first phase, four cattle fair grounds will be modernised at a cost of Rs 15 crore during the fiscal. Stating this here, Rural Development and Panchayats Department Minister Ranjit Singh Brahmpura said the department had visualised a modernisation plan for these cattle fair grounds in the state to attract the farmers to sell or buy quality milch animals at the cattle fairs. He further added that during the first phase the four cattle fair grounds situated at Valla in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Killianwali (Muktsar) and Nabipur (Fathegarh Sahib) would be modernised.

Carbine magazines recovered
: The Sadar police Fazilka in joint search operation with military intelligence have recovered two magazines of 9 MM carbine from the canal near border village Kabulshah Hithar. According to FIR registered with the Sadar police, Fazilka, on the definite information from military intelligence, they launched search operation and recovered two empty serviceable 9 MM carbine magazines from the bed of a dry canal near border village Kabulshah Hittar. The magazines were bearing marking 'ICR 59A magazine 9 MM 1 A 34 rounds SAF 1967'. The magazines were hidden in a green old cloth bag. The police have registered a case under the Arms Act.

MBA results
: Jaspreet Kaur of GGNIMT secured the first position by securing 87.1 per cent marks in MBA, while Parveen Kumari came second with 86.12 per cent marks. Gauri Dhir was placed third with 85.6 per cent marks.As many as 17 students of the college secured over 80 per cent marks.

2 held with illicit liquor
:The police has arrested two persons with 300 boxes of illicit liquor on Saturday. The police officials deployed during a naka recovered illicit liquor from a truck Two accused who were caught smuggling 300 boxes of liquor in police custody on Saturday. being smuggled from Chandigarh to various parts of Punjab. The accused have been identified as Subhash Chand of Prem Nagar in Jammu and Kashmir and Tejinder Singh of Hoshiarpur. They have been booked under the Excise Act. Investigations are on.

Six injured
: Six persons were injured when a private vehicle in which they were travelling went out of control and fell into a gorge in the suburbs of Killar township, the subdivisional headquarters of Pangi. The vehicle was on its way from Karyas to Killar township. The injured included Jakhundi Devi, Kamlesh, Kuldip, Dharam Singh, Rakesh and Lalit - all belonged to the Karyas area. They had been admitted to Killar Civil Hospital. The local administration, Killar, provided an immediate relief to all victims.

KANGRA
One killed
: A person was killed and another seriously injured when marble slabs, which were being unloaded from a truck, accidentally slipped at Yol on Friday. The deceased was identified as Ravi Nath (25) of Uttar Pradesh. His body was shifted to the DRPGMC, Tanda, for a post-mortem examination. Rajeev Sabrawal was also injured in the accident.

NSF rues fee hike
: The National Secular Forum ( NSF) has alleged that Jammu University has been overcharging the admission seekers in the name of admission fee and other charges. Vice-president of the NSF Rakesh Chib alleged that the director of Distance Education was drawing extra charges from the freshers during their admissions. He resented that despite a huge fee structure there was no improvement in the functioning of varsity administration for the past several years. Chib also demanded an inquiry into the utilisation of such funds. He threatened to launch an agitation if no action was taken in this regard.

Power shutdown: To carry out urgent repair work on the 11 KV TPN - 4 feeder emanating from 33/11 KV receiving station, Transport Nagar, the power supply to Transport Nagar, Fruit Complex and Narwal Bala shall remain affected on August 23 from 6 am to 11 am.

Awareness camp held: The Jeevan Nagar Welfare Society organised an awareness camp on swine flu at Haridayadeep Ashram in Jeevan Nagar on Saturday under the presidentship of Tirath Singh Salathia. Residents of Jeevan Nagar and Ajit Nagar attended the camp. A team of specialists from Bee Enn Hospital, Ayurvedic Hospital, Jammu, and Baba Ram Dev Chikatsalya, Purani Mandi gave necessary instructions and preventive measures regarding the contagious disease on the occasion.

Probe into hotel collapse
: The depleted building of Hotel Coronation that collapsed here on Friday was a disputed site between two parties and the SMC would inquire into the matter to point out the structural problems which resulted into its collapse. The Joint Commissioner (Planning), SMC, shall inquire into the matter. This information was given to Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development Department, PHE, Tourism, Revenue and Relief Nasir Aslam Wani during his visit to the site of the hotel on Saturday.

Cable-car project: A cable-car project from Rainawari to Hariparbhat Fort here, estimated to cost Rs 6 crore, would be completed within a year. It would have the capacity of carrying 250 passengers per hour. This information was given to Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Ali Mohammad Sagar during his visit to the construction site on Saturday.

Timber smuggling: Minister for Forests and Environment Mian Altaf Ahmad on Saturday informed the Legislative Assembly that rules for the Forest Protection Force created in 1987 would be framed within two months to make the vital organ of the Forest Department effective. He reiterates government’s resolve to break nexus between forest officials and timber smugglers with heavy hand. The Minister said the government was ready to open new Forest Protection Units in uncovered areas to check smuggling in forests.

2 militants killed:A joint team of the police and the Army shot dead two unidentified militants today in the frontier district of Kupwara that has seen a series of encounters at several places in the last few weeks.The police said a team of policemen from Srinagar were joined by their Kupwara counterparts and 8 Grenadiers of the Army and they surrounded a militants hideout in Roshanpora that falls under Trehgam police station. Militants fired upon them and were killed in a retaliatory fire by the security forces, the police said.
