Fatehgarh Sahib, August 22 The family members have backtracked from their statements after the reported intervention of local political leaders and senior police officials. The main complainant, cleaner of the truck, Pradeep Kumar, in a fresh statement given to the police said the truck driver, Maman, died during severe beating by some unidentified men after a freak accident on the GT Road. He also said Maman had consumed liquor in the morning, which could have led to his death. The truck driver was beaten up by some influential people having political connections, of Sirhind yesterday after an accident. The SSP, Fatehgarh Sahib, when contacted said the munshi and the duty officer deployed in the police station have been shifted to the police lines. DSP Dilbag Singh Pannu is still investigating the matter and any of the police officials found guilty in the death of the truck driver would be taken to task, he said. The police officials looking into the matter said a case against the unidentified people has been registered in this connection. The cops said the postmortem of the truck driver has been conducted by a special board of doctors and no external injuries were found on the body of the deceased. Meanwhile, the chairperson of the Human Rights Manch of Khamano, Manjit Kaur, demanded a magisterial inquiry into the alleged custodial death of the truck driver. She said that there were number of loopholes in the story, which should be looked into by a competent authority. |

Sack temporary employees: SGPC

Anandpur Sahib, August 22 In its letter, the SGPC has directed all its gurdwaras falling under Section 85 to expel the temporary employees below the age of 30 years. It has also been directed that a list of employees above 60 years of age be prepared on the basis of their physical fitness. This has mainly affected the pathis performing akhand path in gurdwaras as well as ragis that work on temporary basis. These pathis are paid Rs 350 per path. With this letter, 45 pathis at Nada Sahib Gurdwara, Panchkula, 50 to 60 pathis at Anandpur Sahib and around 30 pathis at Kiratpur Sahib have been expelled. Protesting against these orders of the SGPC, a group of pathis assembled in Anandpur Sahib and raised voice against the injustice. They said that because of misdeeds of two young temporary employees, the entire section has been branded as misfit. “Why should everybody suffer because of two goons? What is our mistake? We are performing our duties with utmost dedication. Before expelling us, the SGPC should review character of each and every temporary employee,” said an irate pathi. Meanwhile, SGPC officials said with this protest, the higher officials may decide to review the matter. |

Daughter-in-law of doctor found dead
Kharar, August 22 He said this morning at around 10 am, they received a phone call from the Arora family that Uma had suffered a heart attack and that her condition was serious. “When we reached there, they had already started the cremation process. The pyre was ready and we were shocked to see some scars on her neck. Later, the women who bathed her told us that there were unusual scars on the body,” the woman’s father told the police. Her father informed the police that he grew suspicious when he saw their haste in cremating the body. The police intervened and took the body in its custody. The body has been kept at the Civil Hospital at Kharar for postmortem. In a representation to the police and the SDM, her urged that a board of doctors, including a private doctor, should conduct her postmortem. They also said the proceedings of the postmortem should be videographed. The postmortem would be conducted tomorrow. The Kharar police has initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174, CrPC. |

Hindi-Punjabi translation software developed
Patiala, August 22 With the Hindi-Punjabi translation software, Punjabi readers could read Hindi language in Punjabi easily, he added. Vishal Goyal, senior lecturer, department of computer science, who has developed the software said it was in its formative stage. “One can send emails in Hindi and Punjabi through this software,” said Jaspal. Dr GS Lehal, director, Advanced Centre for Technical Development of Punjabi Language, Literature and Culture, said the completion of the software was due to the efforts put in by Vishal Goyal. He added that Dr Gurpreet Singh Josan, who had just completed PhD had released the Punjabi to Hindi Machine translation system. This translation software is available at the university website link. |

Surprise check by health minister
Bassi Pathana, August 22 Doctors and other staff members were stunned to see the health minister. She went to the emergency and other wards. She interacted with the patients and enquired from them about the treatment being given to them in the hospital. She asked about the medicines being provided to them, presence of doctors and also about para-medical staff. She took the round of entire hospital and particularly asked about the cleanliness in the hospital. She checked the attendance register and enquired from the doctors about their colleagues. She also enquired from them about the facilities being given to the patients and clinical tests being conducted in the hospital. The doctors and staff arranged for refreshment but interestingly she didn’t accept. According to sources she expressed satisfaction over the treatment being given to the patients. |

1 killed, 20 hurt as bus overturns
Ambala, August 22 The deceased was identified as Aslam Khan (18). The injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital at Ambala City. According to information, the bus was coming from Badola to Ambala Cantt. When it was turning towards Dorana it overturned. According to a passenger, the bus was overloaded and it skidded when it took a turn. The passengers alleged that the driver was driving the bus rashly. The police registered a case in this regard and is investigating the matter. The driver of the bus, however, managed to flee from the accident site. The passengers and villagers blocked the road in protest. SDM, Ambala, Arvind Sharma reached the spot and after his persuasion the villagers lifted the

Rajpura, August 22 The condition of the other two was serious and they were referred to a hospital in Chandigarh from the Civil Hospital, Rajpura. The body of Sanjay was retrieved from under the tractor with the help of a crane. A case has been registered. |

Kalka, where he died. The police handed over the body to the relatives of Hira Khan after the autopsy was conducted. A case was registered against

Rs 10,000 stolen from PU gurdwara
Chandigarh, August 22 Meanwhile, five residents of Ram Darbar, Phase II, has been booked for allegedly beating up two men of their locality on August 18. A case under Sections 323, 506, 34 of the IPC has been registered in the Sector 31 police station. Shish Pal and his brother Sadish sustained injuries and were admitted to a hospital. Those booked have been identified as Sonu, Sanju, Monu, Nany and Deepa.
Two acquitted
A local court today acquitted two persons on charges of abatement to suicide under Section 306 of the IPC. The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge RK Sondhi today acquitted Shamlal and Nirmal, accused of abatement to suicide of their daughter-in-law. The girl had allegedly consumed poison at her residence in Sector 22 on March 6, 2008. The case was registered on the complaint of Ram Murthi, father of the deceased. Rupa had married Sandeep on October 29, 2001.
Police remand for kingpin
A local court today remanded the kingpin of a car thieves’ gang in police custody fro three days. Surjit Singh, the kingpin of the gang, was arrested from near the Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat yesterday. A resident of Ferozpur, Surjit Singh, was travelling in a stolen vehicle when the police nabbed him. He is said to be involved in the theft of about 150 vehicles. The Panchkula police had arrested Surjit in 2004 and 2007 also and seized 150 vehicles from the gang members.
Biker hits traffic cop
A traffic police constable sustained injuries while on duty after a motorcyclist hit him after jumping the railway red lights here this morning. The incident took place at 11.20 am. Kuldip Singh, the constable, was admitted to the Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16. The police has arrested driver of motorcycle (CH-32-T-6525), Vikramjit Singh, who resides in Sector 20-B, under Sections 279, 337 and 353 of the
IPC.
32-yr-old duped, raped
A resident of Sector 56 has alleged that a man in his early twenties continued to rape her for two months on the pretext of marrying her. The police after receiving the complaint got the victim medically examined. It would become clear whether she was raped or not only after the medical report of the victim is declared. Meanwhile, a case of cheating has been registered against the man in the Sector 39 police station. According to the police, the 32-year-old woman a murder’s wife who is languishing in a jail and has a 14-year-old child from the wedlock. She told the police that Deepak, a wrestler from Haryana, continued to rape her for two months on the pretext of marrying her. |

Maninder scored the first goal, as soon as the game started and Gursewak scored three goals to make a big win for Shivalik Public School. Subhjit hit two goals, Sahil and Subhdeep scored one goal each. The Shivalik team earned four penalty corners in their kitty against nil. In the second match played between DAV School and Mehta Gurukul Academy, Doraha, DAV School scored five goals against one of Mehta Gurukul Academy and registered an easy win. DPS lift soccer cup
Chandigarh, August 22 They gained the custody of the cup after they got the better of unpretentious Ryan International School, Sector 49, Chandigarh, by 2-1 via tiebreaker in the final today. After a goal-less draw in the regulation period, the issue was resolved on penalties. Quazi Muhazib and Udham Singh converted their penalties in smooth action. For Ryan International School, only Rajat could convert his spot kick to reduce the margin in a well-contested title clash. Earlier, Delhi Public School of Pinjore eliminated the challenge of St Xavier’s School of Mohali by 2-0 in the first semifinal played in the morning session. Quazi Muhazib put DPS into the lead with an early goal scored in the sixth minute. Rohit Malik increased the victory margin in the 31st minute. Ryan International got the better of plucky Little Flower Convent of Panchkula with an aggregate 4-2 margin on penalties after sharing two goals in the stipulated period. It was Ryan International, which drew the first blood in the seventh minute through Karan. The Little Flower Convent tried their best to neutralise the lead and they got success in the 39th minute, when Shamsher Singh caught the Ryan International’s defence on the wrong foot.
