Thapar student hangs himself to death
Patiala, August 14
Pajneet Singh Pajneet Singh, B.Tech third year student of Thapar University, Patiala , committed suicide in the university hostel no. H here today. Pajneet belonged to Amritsar and was the only son in the family. His father Upinder Singh is a chartered accountant at Amritsar.

AAI still unclear about project cost

While the Punjab government is keen that the proposed international airport at Mohali comes up early, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is still not clear about the cost of the project and when will it begin construction work at the site.

Illegal driving school cars challaned

The vehicle of New Gagan Driving School being inspected by a motor vehicle inspection team on the dividing road of Sectors 27 and 30. The State Transport Authority (STA) swung into action and issued challans today following the news in Chandigarh Tribune yesterday that illegal driving schools are flourishing in the city. The two vehicles belong to “The New Gagan Driving School” were intercepted by the Motor Vehicle Inspector on the dividing road of Sector 27 and 30.

I-Day: Police on the toes
The Armymen inspect Sector 17 parade ground. Chandigarh, August 14
The Chandigarh Police has launched a special drive to check anti-social elements in lieu of the Independence Day celebrations. A senior police official said slums and colonies were being checked early this morning. The police was also carrying out a verification and surveillance drive in all hotels and guesthouses, including restaurants in the city.

Sri Krishna Janmashtami was celebrated at the city’s ISKCON temple with various colourful programmes in a tastefully bedecked temple hall at Hare Krishna Dham in Sector 36-B here today. Devotees in huge numbers thronged the temple. Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia also visited the temple on the auspicious occasion. Many other dignitaries, including IAS, IPS and judges, also visited the temple.

500 on Deputation in UT
Teachers’ crunch in Punjab, Haryana

After a brief dry spell, heavy rains lashed the city today, bringing much-needed respite to the residents from hot and humid conditions.  The city today got cooler by almost five degrees Celsius with cloudy skies and downpour for four-five hours. According to Met office, the city today recorded 9 mm of rainfall. The maximum temperature recorded during the day was 33.2 °C and the minimum 27.6 °C.

DCP (south district) HGS Dhaliwal is a proud recipient of Police Medal for Gallantry on this Independence Day. Alumnus of Panjab University, Chandigarh, and resident of Patiala, this 1997 batch IPS officer has the unique distinction of being the first police officer in the country to be selected as “Young Achiever” by the Confederation of Indian Industries for personal interaction with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Traffic disrupted on Kalka-Shimla road
Kalka, August 14
Traffic on National Highway 22, which passes through Kalka and Pinjore, remained disrupted throughout the day, which caused great inconvenience to tourists and daily commuters. The situation aggravated for about an hour, between 12 noon to 1 pm, due to the breakdown of a truck on the highway. Subsequently, hundreds of vehicles, which remained stuck in the traffic chaos, had to face much inconvenience.

Canadian gets judicial custody

A Dera Bassi court today remanded a Canadian citizen Milstein to 14-day judicial custody in a case of contraband smuggling. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested him with 2.4 gm cannabis at Dappar Toll Plaza, near Lalru, on Thursday.

ICICI Lombard, Skoda Auto penalised

Chandigarh, August 14
The District Consumer Disputes and Redressal Forum has directed ICICI Lombard, a motor insurance company, Sector 40, Skoda Auto India Pvt Ltd, Aurangabad, and Sidak Automobile Pvt Ltd, Karnal, to pay Rs 2,23,595 as compensation for the loss of a vehicle and Rs 50, 000 as the compensation for adopting an unfair trade practice with Rs 500 as the counsel fee.

Notice to Centre over water shortage

Apprehending water scarcity in Mohali in the coming days, municipal councillor Kuljeet Singh Bedi yesterday approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court for commissioning of V and VI phase pipeline from Kajauli water works. Directions were also sought for the installation of adequate tubewells in Mohali and providing hotlines to water works at Mohali on priority basis.

More trouble for SBoP robbery accused

Man hits friend to death

An altercation between two friends took a deadly turn when one of them hit another with a bottle, leading to death at Darua village here tonight. The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Kamal Kumar of the village. He was hawker and was drinking with his friend, Khandu.

Two arrested for thefts in city
Chandigarh, August 14
Lured by the branded clothes, two youngsters from Colony No 4 took to crime and carried out a series of thefts in the city to make a quick buck. The Chandigarh police has claimed to solve several cases of theft with the arrest of two youngsters Aman Tripathi, son of a local BJP leader, and Gurudutt Mishra. The accused were active since the past six months and had carried out a spate of thefts in the city. They had recently struck at Swami Automobiles and a branded garment shop.
