Strike: ATMs run dry

Despite claims of the Chandigarh administration of having streamlined the functioning of auto-rickshaws in the city, troubles of the common man on city roads do not seem to end. While conventional auto-rickshaw drivers were already notorious for harassing commuters, now even those running LPG auto-rickshaws have picked up the tricks of the trade and are overcharging commuters by refusing to run their vehicles on meters.

A 25-year-old labourer died after falling from the fifth floor of an under-construction building near Waraich farmhouse on the Ambala-Chandigarh National Highway this afternoon.

Encroachers have been repeatedly carrying out violations by encroaching upon the municipal corporation land, thanks to a nominal fine imposed by the authorities. Consequently, repetitive encroachment drives by the enforcement department end up nowhere, as most encroachers are back to their places of business by paying the fine of Rs 500 per day.

A newly married woman, Gurdeep Kaur, a resident of Ambala City, reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan today morning.

Following the recent orders of the District Consumer Forum to penalise a practicing lawyer at the District Courts for deficiency in services, the District Bar Association has moved a resolution against forum president Jagroop Singh Mahal.

Four convicted of robbery

A local court today convicted four persons of robbing a trader of Rs 70,000 in cash. The court of Additional Sessions Judge RS Attri convicted Karan, Raju, Shahzad and Ghulab, all residents of Bapu Dham, of robbing Rattan Das, a Shimla-based apple trader, who had come to the city to sell his produce.

Minor held for raping 6-year-old

The police today arrested a 16-year-old boy on charge of raping a six-year-old girl at Darua village here on August 1. According to the police, the accused had fled after his father beat him up on learning about his act.
