Customers in Chandigarh seem to be paying a price for the covetousness of the shopkeepers. While the RBI is planning to allow stores to give cash back on credit and debt cards, customers using the plastic money in the city are being harassed by shopkeepers who charge 2 per cent extra for any such transaction.

Doctor, guards assault patient’s attendant
Chandigarh, August 5
An attendant of a patient was allegedly beaten up by a doctor and two security guards of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, here today. The victim, Badri Prasad (52), a resident of Sector 48, had gone to the hospital with his son, Nikhil, who was undergoing treatment in the psychiatry department.

City will emerge golf destination: Rodrigues

With a view to integrating golf with tourism activities, the UT Administrator General (retd) SF Rodrigues, today launched Golf Tourism at a function held at Hotel Mountview here this evening. Appreciating the initiative, Rodrigues said Chandigarh had emerged as a symbol of the New Resurgent India and it would emerge as a golf destination.

City Emporio Mall gets show-cause notice

The Fire and Emergency Services Department, Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, has issued a show-cause notice to the City Emporio Mall, Plot No. 143-A, Industrial Area, Phase-I, for violating fire norms by compromising on the public safety.

Fida Sham-e-Ghazal released

In an endeavour to reviving and propagating the old traditions of Indian music, Mohali-based TV channel Fida Entertainment has envisaged a plan to produce music albums in a phased manner. The audience witnessed the release ceremony of the first two DVD albums titled Fida Sham-e-Ghazal (volume I and II) at Hotel Sun Beam here today. Releasing the first such albums, chief guest Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, Punjab MLA, applauded the channel, particularly its chief Haresh Singh for upholding the sanctity of Indian classical music genre besides giving chance to the budding artistes of the region.

The District Consumer Disputes and Redressal Forum has directed Pasco Motors, Industrial Area, Phase I, to refund Rs 25,098 to a complainant whom it charged for carrying out a repair work while the vehicle of the complainant was still in the warranty period.

Receiving a grant worth Rs 2 crore for the project, Panjab University (PU) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ambedkar Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition (AIHM), Sector 42, here, to provide the infrastructure and facilities for practicals, including its laboratories to students of the University Institute of Hotel Management and Tourism (UIHMT).

Bid to loot ATM

Burglars made an unsuccessful attempt to loot cash from an ATM of Punjab National Bank branch here last night. The burglars succeeded in breaking open the ATM but could not open the cash box. Instead, they took away two batteries, UPS and stabiliser installed in the ATM. Last month, burglars had attempted to commit theft at the same branch but were unable to break the safe of the lockers.

HC: Maintain register of cancellation reports

A cancellation report filed in a case against the police went missing from the office of an Amritsar magistrate; and, in an obvious attempt to prevent re-occurrence of such incidents, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has asked all judicial officers in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh to make entries of such reports in a special register.

Six acquitted of planning robbery
Panchkula, August 5
Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjeev Jindal acquitted six accused arrested by the police while planning to loot a petrol pump last year. The prosecution failed to produce anything substantial against the accused.
