Three more districts to get Adarsh schools

The Punjab government would soon start three Adarsh schools under public-private partnership (PPP) in three border districts to impart free and quality education to students belonging to the economically weaker sections. Each Adarsh school would provide education to 1,000 students.

Jagroop Singh (70) of Dudhal village and Mangat Ram (48) of Malod village in Ludhiana, were killed and Surjit Kaur, Hardev Kaur, Gurmit Singh, Mukhtiar Singh and Harbans Kaur injured, when the truck they were travelling in overturned near the Rahon-Machhiwara bridge across the Sutlej on the Nawanshahr-Khanna road today.

MC purchases funeral van, forgets to use it

The funeral van purchased by the Municipal Council with the funds provided by then Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh in December 2006 has not been put to use. The van, purchased for Rs 5 lakh, has virtually been catching rust on the premises of Municipal Indoor Stadium.

The Rotary Club Banga City donated ultra-modern medical equipment like radiant heat warmer, slow suction pump and phototherapy unit to ensure healthcare facilities for babies to Guru Nanak Mission Hospital being run by Guru Nanak Mission Medical and Educational Trust, Dhahan Kaleran, at a ceremony organised on Wednesday.

4 PSEB men booked for theft
Hoshiarpur, August 3
On the complaint of PSEB Executive Engineer Jaswinder Singh, the police has booked Sampuran Singh of Hirchowal, Surinder Singh of Hariana, Harnek Singh of Rasulpur and Gurdev Singh of Panvan, all employees of the PSEB, under sections 380, 381 and 411 of the IPC. Jaswinder Singh said he caught the accused while they were stealing electric goods from the store of the PSEB outside the railway station on August 1. — OC

College teachers stage protest

On the call given by the state body of the Government College Teachers Association (GCTA), teachers of the local Sri Guru Arjan Dev Government College and Government College, Patti, observed two-hour strike from 11 am to 1 pm. The teachers also staged a dharna on the premises of their respective colleges. Dr Bhupinder Singh and Dr Surinder Kaur, president and secretary, respectively, of the local unit of the association said the teachers were demanding UGC scales from the state government.

SSP Rakesh Aggarwal, while addressing mediapersons here on Monday, claimed to have busted a racket of fake Indian currency by arresting four persons, Satnam Singh of Sadhowal village (Hoshiarpur), Kuldip Singh, alias Bunty, of Garhshankar (Hoshiarpur), Aslam of Guliar village in Una and Ram Bulf Chauhan of Jagannathpur, Parsa (Nepal).

The police has seized fake Indian currency worth Rs 5.65 lakh from their possession.

Aggarwal said a police party, led by DSP Satpal Singh Bhangu, on July 25 got information that Satnam Singh of Sadhpur village, along with fake Indian currency, was waiting for a customer on the Mehndipur-Gujjarpur link road on the Nawanshahr-Garhshankar Road.

SHO (City) Raj Kumar, along with the police party and a witness, Jaspal Singh, alias Nindi, conducted a raid and nabbed Satnam.

Fake Indian currency amounting to Rs 60,000 was seized from his possession.

Further as per information given by Satnam, another gang member Kuldip Singh was nabbed along with fake Indian currency amounting to Rs 9,500 seized from him here at Dasehra Ground. On the information given by Kuldip Singh, the police again conducted a raid today and nabbed Aslam Mohammad and Rambulf Chauhan from the Mehndipur-Gujjarpur link road. Fake Indian currency of Rs 1 lakh and Rs 3.96 lakh was seized from Aslam and Rambulf, respectively.

Hence, in total the fake Indian currency amounting to Rs 5.65 lakh in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 was seized from the gang members.

The SSP said during interrogation it had come to light that the fake currency was being prepared in Pakistan and Singapore and was being brought here through Nepal.

In Nepal, fake Indian currency amounting to Rs 1 lakh was available at Rs 25,000 and in India it was being supplied at a cost of Rs 65,000.

The gang members had confessed to have circulated fake Indian currency amounting to Rs 16 lakh.

A case, under sections 489 A, B, C of the IPC has been registered at the city police station

Quality Education
Three more districts to get Adarsh schools

The Punjab government would soon start three Adarsh schools under public-private partnership (PPP) in three border districts to impart free and quality education to students belonging to the economically weaker sections. Each Adarsh school would provide education to 1,000 students.

Education Minister Upinderjit Kaur said three schools would start at Bukkanwala in Ferozepore district, Bhakhariwal in Gurdaspur and Valer Khurd in Tarn Taran district. The buildings have already been constructed by the PEDB for these schools and other infrastructure, including modern science labs, would also be provided soon, she added.

Upinderjit Kaur said setting up of Adarsh schools would provide the students with rural background opportunities of education at par with their counterparts in urban areas.

The minister said the Education Department was already running nine Adarsh schools and 17 more such schools would be set up this year.

She said capital cost of construction of school buildings would be shared on 50:50 basis by the PEDB and the private partners and the operational cost would be shared on 70:30 basis between the board and private partners.

The expressions of interests from eligible private partners, including business groups and educational managements have been invited for opening of such Adarsh schools.

PTU to hold final counselling from August 6

Left with more than 5,500 seats in B.Tech and over 1,100 seats in B.Pharmacy unfilled even after two rounds of counselling, Punjab Technical University has plans to offer a final chance of common counselling to its affiliated colleges through the manual mode on its campus on the Jalandhar-Kapurthala road.

The final counselling, however, will be conducted on the basis of a qualifying examination which could be Plus Two or a diploma in engineering or pharmacy rather than the merit in the CET.

The manual counselling will be conducted for three days. On August 6, the general category candidates with 70 per cent or above marks will appear in the forenoon. The reserved category candidates with same percentage criteria have been called in the afternoon. Those with less than 70 per cent have been called on August 7. Candidates falling in sports, defence and paramilitary categories have been called on August 8.

The second round of online counselling for B.Tech and B.Pharma for 15 per cent other state quota was conducted from July 29 to 31. During the round 1,875 candidates were registered and 1,756 candidates filled their choices. As many as 1,413 new candidates were allotted seats, whereas 157 students were upgraded and 51 students retained their previous allotments.

The PTU Registrar, Sarojini Gautam Sharda, said the result would be available on PTU website www.ptuadmissions.nic.in on August 4. She has asked the candidates to report to the allotted institute for the admissions by August 5. She has asked the candidates to come personally along with their original testimonials. The candidates who have already deposited counselling fee of Rs 2,500 have been asked not to deposit counselling fee again.

960 engg seats at LPU filled

All the 960 AIEEE seats applied for by Lovely Professional University have been taken by students from as far as Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Arunachal Pradesh, etc. through online counselling.

A student from Andhra Pradesh with all-India rank (AIR) in the first 12,000 filled the first preference for LPU to pursue his engineering studies. Students from 20 states, including Rajasthan, have filled their preference for LPU. Bihar, Delhi, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Orissa , Chandigarh, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Chattisgarh, Gujarat Haryana, Punjab, Arunachal Pradesh and Maharashtra are the other states from where students have taken admission at LPU, Chancellor Ashok Mittal said in a press statement.

SI held with woman in Golden Temple sarai

A sub-inspector (SI), Parhlad Singh, posted at Police Lines, was nabbed with a woman at Guru Arjan Dev Sarai in the Golden Temple complex here today.

A case under section 109 of the IPC was registered against him. He was presented before the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, who granted him bail.

According to information, some SGPC employees got suspicious of his activity when he booked a room in the sarai. They caught him with the woman and handed him over to the police.

While the Police Department was tightlipped over the incident, a senior official preferring anonymity, confirmed the incident.

Parhald Singh was earlier posted at Attari police station, from where he was transferred to Police Lines after a departmental action.

Meanwhile, the SGPC has also initiated the move to hold an enquiry to identify the employee who let the SI use the room meant for NRI and other devotees.

Ravidass morcha’s protest today

The Shri Guru Ravidass Dharam Yudh Morcha will hold a three-hour-long protest march from 11 am here tomorrow.

Stating this, the morcha convener Satish Bharti said the march would be held in protest against the failure of the police in arresting the accused in the case of the killing of Vijay Kumar at Dhilwan village two months back. — TNS

BSP activists held a protest march, blocked traffic and burnt the effigy of AICC President Sonia Gandhi and Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee President Paramjit Singh Sarna at Chandigarh Chowk to protest against the defamatory statements made by Sarna allegedly in connivance with the Congress.

Among others, BSP state General Secretary Paramjit Gosal, Dr Nachhatar Pal and Sat Pal Langroya demanded action against Sarna. They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner for onward submission to the President of India and the Governor of Punjab. — OC

2 pilgrims killed, 5 hurt in road mishap

Jagroop Singh (70) of Dudhal village and Mangat Ram (48) of Malod village in Ludhiana, were killed and Surjit Kaur, Hardev Kaur, Gurmit Singh, Mukhtiar Singh and Harbans Kaur injured, when the truck they were travelling in overturned near the Rahon-Machhiwara bridge across the Sutlej on the Nawanshahr-Khanna road today.

Sources said the truck, carrying 30 devotees from Malod village in Ludhiana, was going to Dera Baba Badbhagh Singh. The truck overturned as its driver Tarlok Singh’s eyes were dazzled due to lights of a car and it ran over a pile of stones lying on the road.

Rahon Additional SHO Garib Dass reached there and cleared the road blockade. The injured were brought to the Civil Hospital. Jagroop died at the hospital, while Surjit Kaur was referred to the DMC, Ludhiana.

MC purchases funeral van, forgets to use it

The funeral van purchased by the Municipal Council with the funds provided by then Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh in December 2006 has not been put to use. The van, purchased for Rs 5 lakh, has virtually been catching rust on the premises of Municipal Indoor Stadium.

This fact came to light when a resident, Krishan Kumar, sought information from the MC Executive Officer under the Right to Information Act. The MC said a Tata 207 vehicle was purchased at Rs 3.50 lakh on December 22, 2006, and Rs 1.50 lakh was spent on its fabrication as funeral van on March 6, 2007. No RC and insurance of vehicle have been made yet and no charges for using of van fixed. Neither any driver has been appointed nor any log book started, said the MC.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee general secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur presided over the ceremony and lauded the gesture of the club and contribution of the NGO towards providing healthcare and education facilities in rural area for the past more than three decades.
