Ranbir ‘Encounter’
Dehradun, July 10 The affidavit mentioned that government had already recommended a CBI probe into the matter and notification in this regard has already been made. The next date of the hearing in the Court has been fixed for July 21. Notably, acting on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by People's Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL), Uttarakhand chapter, the High Court had yesterday directed Uttarakhand government to file an affidavit about the status report of the probe into the killing of Ranbir. Lawyer Ravi Kiran Jain disclosed that in its petition, PUCL had prayed before the court that besides the CBI, Dehradun district judge should also be asked to probe the matter. The petition also mentioned that compensation should be given to Ranbir's family and state government should be directed to follow the norms laid by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) with regard to the police encounter deaths. Sources revealed that so far CBI has not registered any case pertaining to the killing of Ranbir by the Dehradun police in an alleged fake encounter. They added that a CBI probe is likely to start in the next few days. Meanwhile, during the investigations, it came to light that the motorcycle recovered from Ranbir was not stolen from Haryana, but from New Delhi and a wrong number plate, bearing some Haryana number, was put on it. On the other hand, further toughening its stand against the police, senior Congress leaders today demanded an inquiry into all the police encounters reported in past two years in Dehradun. "Whenever crime is on the rise, police officials allegedly kill persons involved in petty crimes in encounters to show that law and order is under control. “In most of the encounters, police have failed to produce the criminal history of the person killed. “Hence, there is need to probe the encounters that have taken place in past two years," demanded senior Congress leader Suryakant Dhasmana. |

Govindacharya: Ganga flow being disturbed
Dehradun, July 10 While asserting that it was not victory of ruling party in the elections but failure of the main opposition party, BJP, that gave UPA an opportunity to return to power, he said, “The failure of the BJP in fulfilling its commitments when the party was in power at the Centre is the major reason behind UPA’s win.” He also charged that BJP had completely failed as the main opposition party in Parliament. Replying to a query whether BJP lost because it drifted away from the Ram temple issue, Govindacharya said the core of Hindutva ideology does not depend only on the single issue of Ram ‘janmabhoomi’ alone. “Liquor vends in Rajasthan increased from 600 to 3,400. The natural course of Ganga was disturbed. Is this what Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya dreamt would happen
under the BJP rule?” he questioned. He said had the BJP been really interested, the issue of Ram temple would have been resolved, even without defying Apex Court orders. Govindacharya also came down heavily on the Uttarakhand government for violating the guidelines with respect to hydropower projects in the state. “In violation of the rules laid down by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, in one of the hydropower project in Srinagar (Uttarakhand), the height of dam was increased from 63 to 90 metres and the production capacity was raised from 200 to 330 Mega Watts,” alleged Govindacharya, who is also the convener of Rashtriya Swabhimaan Aandolan. Expressing dismay over the practice of disturbing the natural flow of rivers, Govindacharya said, according to guidelines, for utilising water for the
small hydropower projects the course of rivers cannot be changed more than 30 percent. “But in Uttarakhand these directions are not being followed and the natural flow of Ganga has been badly disturbed.” On the Delhi High Court legalising homosexuality, Govindacharya said there was no need for that. “The institution of marriage will lose relevance and legalising homosexuality will have far-reaching consequences with respect to the social set up of our nation,” he said. |

Dehradun, July 10 Earlier, a visit by Medical Council of India team had found the college understaffed and had given a list of requirements that needed to be fulfilled in respect of Rural Health Training Centre and Library. “The renewal papers are yet to be received by the college as the communiqué is still at the level of the health departments of Central and state governments. Most of the deficiencies pointed out by the Medical Council team earlier have been addressed,” said Dr Dr KK Tamta, Medical Superintendent of the Srinagar Medical College. “In all, the teaching faculty comprises 97 members, 11 less than the stipulated number. But as the college is situated in the hilly area, the norms have been relaxed by the MCI. A complete report to the MCI team that visited us last week has been given,” he added. At the request of the government, the MCI team conducted a second visit and was satisfied with the steps taken by the College.

Plastic factory gutted in SIDCUL
Haridwar, July 10 According to Ranipur police station officials, some workers in the basement area spotted fire at the ‘Gitanshi Poly-firm private limited’, which is located in Sector-3. Being a plastic factory, the raw material including, plastic and foam, acted as a catalyst. Such was the magnitude that seven fire brigade vehicles had to be pressed into service. Initially, fire tenders from CISF BHEL and Haridwar fire station were pressed into service, but when these were unable to control the flames, additional vehicles were called in from Roorkee and Lakshar tehsil. It was only after five hours that the fire could be doused, but by that time a major part of the factory had turned into ashes. Fire officer, Haridwar, SK Sharma informed that albeit the fire broke out early, they received information only at around 7:30 pm by which time a major part was already gutted. SIDCUL fire officer AK Aghri said the reason behind the fire was yet to be established. Meanwhile, District Magistrate R Meenakshi Sundaram after visiting the spot ordered a magisterial probe into this matter. Another honour for braveheart Priyanshu
Dehradun, July 10 For ten-year-old Priyanshu and his sister Priyanka, a year older to him, a scuffle with leopard on July 1 was least they had expected when they left their home at Pondha for Kendriya Vidhyalaya, Premnagar. It was certainly sheer intelligence of Priyanshu that averted almost certain death for the duo. As the two were some distance away from their school, they were shocked to find a leopard on the wall of a textile mill. Priyanshu immediately asked his sister to run away from the spot. But then, before they could flee, leopard attacked sister Priyanka but Priyanshu’s quick intervention that resulted in scuffle between leopard and the boy discouraged the beast from attacking the duo further. |
