Haas runs past Novak, into Roger
London, July 1 The German 24th seed, a first-time quarter-finalist here, broke in game 11 of the opening set and served out to take the lead after 45 minutes. Djokovic wasted three set points in the second set tiebreak before Haas wrapped it up 8-6 before the Serb mounted a comeback by taking the third. But his recovery failed to convince and the German, a former world number two whose career has been blighted by injury, stormed to a 4-1 lead in the fourth and sealed it when Djokovic netted a forehand service return. He will play Swiss second seed Roger Federer for a place in Sunday’s final. British third seed Andy Murray put in a punishing display of crisp hitting to dispose of Spanish wildcard Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 and reach the first Wimbledon semifinal of his career. Five-times champion Roger Federer took the sting out of Croatian Ivo Karlovic's venomous serve to win 6-3, 7-5, 7-6 and book his place in a 21st straight grand slam semifinal. Karlovic’s thunderous serve had not been broken at this year’s Wimbledon but the Swiss maestro nullified the 2.08m player’s key weapon in the fourth game of their quarterfinal and the Croat 22nd seed never looked like recovering. “You expect a tough scoreline all the time, it’s not easy to break him we know that so I am happy to have broken him twice and won the match,” Federer said in a courtside interview. “I love the record I have, reaching so many grand slam semis in a row. Twenty one is quite a number and it shows how consistent I have been, how injury-free I have been to keep it up for such a long time.” Karlovic had served 137 aces in the tournament before Wednesday and the signs looked ominous when his first serve of the day went whistling past Federer’s ears to take his tally to 138. But Federer got a sighter in the first game and a blistering blocked backhand return in Karlovic’s second service game helped the Swiss to the break which he greeted with huge: “Come on!” A single break was again enough for Federer to take the second set and though the Croatian took the third to a tiebreak the Swiss clinched it 7-3 with a forehand crosscourt winner after an hour and 42 minutes. He will play Germany’s Tommy Haas, seeded 24, for a place in Sunday’s final. — Reuters Bhupathi-Knowles go down fighting
Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles twice erased the deficit but were still sent packing from the Wimbledon championships following a defeat in a marathon men’s doubles quarterfinal against Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman here today. The fourth seeded Indo-Bahamian pair put up a valiant fight before losing 6-7 (9), 6-4, 6-7 (7), 5-7, 4-6 in a three hour and 37 minute match to ninth seed South African-Belgian pair. Both the pairs played a solid service game and as the first set did not see any break it had to be decided through a fiercely fought tie-breaker, which Moody and Norman won to take the lead. Jolted by the early deficit, Bhupathi and Knowles rode on a break of serve apart from saving the only break point they faced to clinch the second set. With no pair willing to concede even an inch, the third set was also decided by a tie-breaker, which Moody and Norman clinched to break into lead yet again. Bhupathi and Knowles dug deep into their reserves and went on to win the fourth set to stretch the match to fifth set but could not stop their rivals from marching into the last-eight stage.

Venues for India-Aus series announced
Mumbai, July 1 Guwahati was scheduled to host the final India-England ODI last year in November but Kevin Pietersen and his men returned home midway through the series after the Mumbai terror attacks. The match had looked in trouble even before that because of serial blasts in the North Eastern city. The domestic schedule for the season was also drawn up. It was decided that the Duleep Trophy would be held on a knock-out basis and South Zone would host the inaugural edition of the BCCI Corporate Trophy from September 1-8. The inter-state Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy, that was not held in the previous season, will be held, Srinivasan said. Women cricketers would be playing only limited overs matches, one-dayers and T20 ties. In junior cricket, the C K Nayudu Trophy for under-22 players and the Cooch Behar Trophy for under-19 cricketers would be played in a two-tier format - Elite Group and Plate Group - on a home and away basis. No Deodhar Trophy in 2009-10
Mumbai: The Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) has dropped the annual Deodhar Trophy tournament for the 2009-10 season because of a crammed domestic schedule. The decision was taken by the Tour Programmes and Fixtures Committee of the BCCI which met here today to chalk out the domestic schedule. “Deodhar has been dropped because of the tight schedule (of domestic cricket)”, said a BCCI source. The tournament, named after one of the doyens of domestic cricket Prof D B Dodhar who died aged 101 in 1993, has been held every year since its inception in 1973-74 as a 60-over event to fine tune Indian cricketers in the limited overs game which was then becoming popular in England. Next year’s IPL is scheduled to start on March 18, a full month ahead of its normal starting point in April.

Need Mosley, Bernie for FIA top post: Vicky
Chennai, July 1 Vicky said talks of him running for the top FIA job stemmed from a race magazine which named him as one of the five potential successors of Mosley. But unless Mosley himself and Bernie don't throw their weight behind him, Vicky said, he cannot take these reports seriously. “I am honoured and privileged that my name is doing the rounds but certainly for me to take it seriously, I will need the support of Mosley and Bernie. Otherwise, there is no way I could do something,” Vicky said. “I need the support of both these gentlemen even to think of contesting for the post in the FIA elections,” he added. The former Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) chief said Mosley himself may want to stay back for another term. Besides, he said, there were more people with more experience in FIA's running. — PTI |
Madrid, July 1 “Today is a very special day for me. I’m very happy about this new step in my career at Real Madrid,” said Kaka, who will wear the No. 8 shirt. “Viva Madrid!” Kaka, who passed his medical earlier yesterday, and Cristiano Ronaldo are Perez’s major summer signings as he bids to make up for a season without silverware. “There are no words for today, it’s an unforgettable day,” Kaka said. “All of this is a great honor and responsibility, and not a negative responsibility but a positive one. I hope we can win titles and many victories.” Kaka took the stage in front of a backdrop featuring photos of iconic Madrid players Alfredo di Stefano, Raul Gonzalez, Juanito and Zinedine Zidane. Accompanied by a young fan donning the first Kaka jersey, he subsequently did a tour of one half of the 80,000-capcity stadium to sign autographs and salute to the pumped-up masses. Hopes are high at Madrid, which failed to get past the first knockout stage of Europe’s top-tier competition for the fifth straight season and lost the league to bitter rival Barcelona, which became the first Spanish club to win the treble last season. Kaka believes Madrid is in a great position to compete after finishing runner-up last year. “Madrid has everything in terms of a fascinating team. And it’s always been a reference for great players,” Kaka said. — AP |
