London, June 26 The second was in the bag 30 minutes later but the German rallied from 2-0 down in the third to take it to a tiebreak which he won with a wonderful angled backhand 7-5. Federer, five times a champion here, snuffed out the rising threat by racing to a 3-0 lead in the fourth and finally booked a fourth-round berth against French Open finalist Robin Soderling of Sweden with a thunderous forehand winner. Twice former champion Serena Williams outclassed Italy's Roberta Vinci 6-3 6-4 to book her place in the fourth round at Wimbledon on Friday. The 27-year-old American, seeking to add another Wimbledon crown to the Australian Open she won in January, broke for a 3-1 lead in the opening set against the world number 53 and never looked back. The second seed breezed through the opening set in 28 minutes and though Vinci had the audacity to break back with a refreshing penchant for serve and volley, Williams completed victory with a crunching ace on Court Two. She will play Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia for a place in the quarterfinals. Olympic champion Elena Dementieva brushed aside fellow Russian Regina Kulikova 6-1 6-2 to book a place in the Wimbledon fourth round for the sixth time in her career on Friday. The fourth seed, who looks to have one of the best quarters in the draw, broke twice in the opening set before wrapping it up in just 24 minutes before Kulikova, playing her sixth match after a tough qualifying run, improved markedly. The world number 191 made more of a game of it in the second but Dementieva had too much in her armoury, sealing victory with a scrambled backhand down the line. She will play Russia's Elena Vesnina or Slovakian 14th seed Dominika Cibulkova for a place in the quarter-finals. — Reuters |
Kingston, June 26 The duo knit together a 135-run stand for the third wicket to resurrect India's innings, which was rocked by short-pitched bowling after electing to bat at Sabina Park. Early dismissals of Gautam Gambhir (13) and Rohit Sharma (4) had left India reeling at 32 for two but Yuvraj and Karthik batted with patience to not only save India from more jolts but also laid a solid platform for a good finish. After guiding his side to a safe position, Yuvraj started clobbering the host bowlers as he hit seven sixes and 10 fours in his 102-ball knock, his 12th ODI century. He hit both Taylor and Chris Gayle for two sixes each and also added 86 runs for the fourth wicket with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who contributed 41 runs before his run out. Yuvraj batted fearlessly as he hit Lionel Baker for two fours and a six to reach 98 and then stole a single off Taylor to complete his rollicking century. He then hit Taylor for two fours and a six in the same over, which fetched India 16 runs. — PTI Scoreboard |

Johor Bahru, June 26 Wang’s dominance in the match could be gauged from the fact that she scored 23 clear winners as against Saina’s 13. The Chinese shuttler was also the better of the two at the net, winning 11 points while her opponent could only manage seven. In the first game, both shuttlers went neck-and-neck till the first 15 points but from there on Saina, world ranked seventh, went into a shell as Wang pocketed six straight points to seize the initiative. Meanwhile, men’s doubles pair of Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas also exited from the tournament last night, losing their second round match against Malaysian pair of Teik Chai Gan and Bin Shen Tan 13-21, 23-21, 19-21. — PTI |

New Delhi, June 26 Bryant was, however, not so sure about the status of basketball in India though he was pretty confident of visiting India. “Hope to see you soon. Keep following us. Hopefully we will win the (NBA) Championship this year. I would love to come there and cheer with you”, said the NBA star. “When we talk of India what comes to my mind is, I am not sure - cricket. I am still trying to learn the rules. That’s the sport I am pretty interested in”, he observed. Another basketball great Karim Abdul Jabbar said in the same interview that yoga helped him in his basketball career. “I read about Sripramnahas Yognath...I wanted to learn that discipline after reading about him”, Karim elaborated. He said basketball over the years had not changed much, “only change is the international attention it is getting now.” He said good coaching was an asset. “Coaching is very important so that the team is well prepared; hours before the game you make sure your team is prepared and then during the game you can make adjustments; so good coaching is an asset”. He said NBA (National Basketball Association of the US) had done a great job by bringing the game to the world. “The world has responded positively and that is a great achievement”, he added. |
Johannesburg, June 26 This semifinal against the hosts was heading for extra time until Alves, in an inspired move by coach Dunga, replaced Andre Santos and broke the stalemate with a curling free kick in the 88th minute yesterday. Explaining his master move Dunga said: “We knew it was going to be difficult, we knew South Africa were going to attack, to defend and counter attack. The game was very tight so I sent on an aggressive player (Alves) who is very quick and a specialist in set pieces, he practices set pieces every day.” Brazil now face the United States in Sunday’s final with South Africa heading to Rustenburg for the third place play-off with Spain. “I think we played very well against a team recognised as one of the best in world and even surprised Brazil. I’m very proud,” said Brazil-born South Africa coach Joel Santana. “It seemed as though it would be 0-0 but then Brazil had the set piece relying on its experience placing three players in our wall to make it difficult for our keeper. We showed we were able to hold our own. Now we have another year to prepare for the World Cup” Santana said. South Africa were without suspended midfielder Macbeth Sibaya, his place taken by Siphiwe Tshabalala, while Brazil midfielder Luisao started for injured Juan. The two adversaries made it into the last four in wildly contrasting ways - Brazil sauntering through as Group B leaders with maximum points, South Africa edging through on goal difference as Group A runners-up. With President Jacob Zuma watching, about the only one of the 48,000 fans not blowing into a vuvuzela, South Africa made a promising start as they fought to make their first final since the 1996 African Nations Cup. Against the run of play Itumelang Khune was forced into action to save a Ramires effort while shortly after his counterpart Julio Cesar was in full flight to cover a long range effort from speedy defender Siboniso Gaxa. South Africa were giving as good as they got as Brazil tried to work the ball repeatedly down the left flank using Inter Milan back Maicon as the key link. — AFP |
