Khanduri submits resignation
Dehradun, June 25 Khanduri submitted his three-line resignation to the Governor, while Rawat presented him the formal letter of appointment of Pokhriyal as the leader of Uttarakhand BJP legislature party. Joshi congratulated Pokhriyal and requested Khanduri to fulfill his duties till he is sworn in. It is expected that the swearing in ceremony will take place after two days. Pokhriyal was elected leader of the state BJP legislature party on Wednesday in New Delhi, following a decision of the party high command to replace Khanduri. The stunning defeat of ruling BJP on all the five Lok Sabha seats of Uttarakhand prompted the dissidents, led by former Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, to demand Khanduri’s ouster. According to sources, dissidents got support from BJP president Rajnath Singh, who is close to Koshiyari and wanted to replace the CM. |

Khanduri remains loyal soldier
Dehradun, June 25 Sharing his experience as Chief Minister, Khanduri said one of the apparent reasons that led to his ouster was the party’s humiliating defeat in the Lok Sabha elections. “There were several reasons behind the unexpected defeat. But, being CM of the state, I also own responsibility for the defeat,” he said. He, however, refused to discuss anything pertaining to infighting in the party. “The internal matters of the party will be discussed only at the party forum and not with the media,” he said. Khanduri said he would always regret that he could not fulfill all his dreams, which he had for making Uttarakhand a model state in the entire country. “During my two years and three months tenure as CM, I took a lot of decisions for development of the state. “But there were many I intended to do in the coming three years, unfortunately I won’t be able to do that,” he said, while adding that he has high hopes for the overall development of the state from Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, Chief Minister designate. “Development, rooting out corruption and ending unemployment were the three main things on my agenda when I took over the chair. And it gives me immense pleasure that to a great extent, I managed to end the menace of corruption. Besides, the state also witnessed development and special steps were taken to generate more employment for the youth,” claimed Khanduri. He added that during the course of his tenure as CM, he had to take some tough decisions as well, which made some people “unhappy”. Khanduri said transparency in the recruitment system was one of the biggest successes of his government. “I am extremely thankful to my party and the people of the state for supporting me throughout my tenure as CM. “It is my bad luck that I won’t be serving the people for rest of the tenure of the BJP government,” he said. Khanduri also said he would now work as a former CM and the legislator of Dhumakot and try his best for strengthening of the party in the state. |

BHEL executive shot
Haridwar, June 25 Dal Chand suffered two bullets injuries while a bullet hit his wife. Although he died on the spot, Suchitra survived the attack and has been admitted to the BHEL hospital where she is reported to be out of danger. As soon as news spread in the area, people gathered at the place and the police was informed. Senior Superintendent of Police Sanjay Gunjiyal, CO City Navneet Singh, ASP Sweety Aggarwal and other police officials rushed to the spot. According to Gunjiyal, after information from Uttar Pradesh police it has come to light that Chand’s family was involved in a property feud at Deoband, which may be the reason behind the killing. Last year, Chand’s brother was murdered, he informed. Meanwhile, SHO Ranipur Laxman Singh, the investigation officer, had to face public ire when residents complained that the police reached the spot late. They said despite police claims of strict patrolling, a gruesome murder took place in such a posh colony and the assailants managed to escape. Kanwar Mela
Dehradun, June 25 “On request of gas distributors in the district, we have already taken up the matter with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC),
which is the major supplier here. IOC officials have agreed to take necessary steps to ensure that there is no shortage,” said
District Magistrate Amit Singh Negi. Besides instructions to ensure unhindered supply of essential items, the administration is also mulling alternative arrangements to meet any eventuality in view of daily supply requirement of more than 3,000 cylinders in Dehradun. “We have suggested the administration to earmark separate routes for vehicles carrying cylinders during the ‘yatra’. The help of police may be taken in this regard, otherwise the consumers will have to bear with a shortage of supply like every year,” said Deepak Barthwal, secretary, Doon Gas Distributors Association. During the annual ‘yatra’, lakhs of ‘kanwarias’, mainly from UP, Rajasthan and Haryana, clog road routes due to which transport system gets severely affected for around 15-20 days. The supply of cylinders by trucks from the IOC plant at Bahadurabad is delayed on this count, which subsequently causes shortage of gas supply by as much as 10 per cent. |

Banks to facilitate training of rural youth
Dehradun, June 25 Under the Centre-sponsored scheme, the lead banks in four districts of the state had on experimental basis opened Rural Self-Employment Training Institutes (RSETI) last year. “Buoyed by their success, the state government has decided to cover all the 13 districts. “Hopefully, the institutes will start functioning in a couple of months after completion of all modalities,” said a member of the State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC) who did not wish to be named. According to the decision taken in the sub-committee meeting of the SLBC held here last week under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary NS Napalchyal, the district administration concerned and NABARD would frame the curriculum. Training would be imparted in skills like repair of TVs, mobile phones, scooters, motorcycles as well as dairy development. “The main idea is to ensure immediate employment generation,” he added. The interesting part of the initiative is that the lead banks of the districts concerned will manage these institutes. They will appoint a permanent officer of manager level post as director of each institute. The faculty will comprise experts from different fields. The banks will bear the full cost of training of the candidates of APL category while NABARD will reimburse 50 per cent cost in the case of BPL category. “It may be called a social responsibility gesture of the banks,” said a senior bank official. The State Bank of India (SBI) would manage institutes in nine districts where it is the lead bank. The responsibility is given to Bank of Baroda in Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital districts, while Punjab National Bank and Oriental Bank of Commerce will look after Haridwar and Dehradun districts, respectively. The state government has agreed to provide space at Extension Training Centres for the time being. But in the near future, it would provide free land for the buildings. The Central rural development department would provide Rs 1 crore for construction. |

No rain in June: Met dept
Dehradun, June 25
Dr Anand Sharma of Meteorological Department said that heat wave to severe heat wave is likely to continue for some more days before a slight change of weather occurs. He held that while the arrival of the monsoon in June-end was quite normal, the lack of pre-monsoon showers has led to an increase in temperature. The pre-monsoon showers have been missing after the first week of June. While not ruling out El Nino as a factor behind the delay in monsoon, Dr Sharma attributes other factors that could be causes behind the delay. The loss of water in reservoirs leading to poor hydro-power generation, irrigation problems and forest fires would be the major implications of rising temperatures while heat wave could pose to be a major health issue. He also had a word of advice for farmers. Farmers should delay planting in their un-irrigated land at this point of time. Uprooting of weeds, watering only during evening and mulching of dry leaves to conserve moisture could be some measures the farmers need to adopt. The Meteorological Department here has started providing specific weather forecast to ITBP Pitthoragarh for the Mansarovar Yatra and providing inputs to the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam for the Char Dham yatra. The ITBP sources said that the weather inputs provided by the department were proving to be of immense benefit vis-a-vis the Mansarovar Yatra. |

Municipal corporation in spot over veterinary doctor
Dehradun, June 25 The corporation has been totally relying on voluntary organisations to perform duties of veterinary doctors, but now the MC finds itself in a piquant situation after District Magistrate Amit Negi has directed that the menace of stray dogs should be immediately checked. However, Senior Health Officer Dr Gurupal Singh said in case of any exigency the corporation seeks services of a veterinary doctor from outside. But he admitted that the absence of a veterinary doctor is a big hindrance for the corporation. "The veterinary doctor that is engaged by the Dehradun Municipal Corporation often works for a limited time and is not of much help to the corporation," he said. MC officials admit that appointment of a veterinary doctor would be of great help in in not only dealing with stray dogs, but also in saving funds. |

Bhutanese women meet rural entrepreneurs
Dehradun, June 25
The visit has been facilitated by the Delhi-based Rashtriya Mahila Kosh and its Doon-based nodal agency Women Development Organisation. The nine-day trip to India is also an assertion of the Bhutanese society’s desire to strengthen their roots of democracy by replicating the Indian experience especially in the voluntary sector. The next stop of these women members is Himachal Pradesh. The 35 women hail from 34 different constituencies. A single constituency generally comprises four blocks or ‘geoge’ (in Bhutanese). “All of us were selected by the chairman of the ruling party of our country. Most of the members are housewives. This is their first trip outside their country,” said Dki, the team leader. Kencho Dolma, after a visit to the Shilpi gram cluster at Lodhiwala in Bhagwanpur, said, “We will like to set up small automatic weaving units solely run by women as there is an abundance of sheep wool in our country.” The Lodhiwala cluster has been set up by the Women’s Development Organisation (WDO)under the Sustained Training Cum Employment Programme for Women (STEP). It boasts of a wool bank that was inspiration enough for Pema, who was keen to grasp the nitty-gritties of setting up the unit. “I am impressed with the way self-help groups are sustaining the entire unit. I think it is an experiment worth emulating,” said Pema. The group also visited the first demonstration-cum-training-cum-production model of ‘sisal’ (Rambans) at Kolhupani, Dehradun run by WDO. “In the southern part of Bhutan, we have a similar tree almost akin to ‘sisal’ that could be put to use. The women self-help groups are making mats, bags and other utility items and then selling them through handicraft counters. “We could take a leaf or two from here especially about the concept of ‘shilp melas’ and handicraft fairs for selling these articles,” said Choden, a grocery shop owner in Bhutan. The facilitator of the trip, Rashtriya Mahila Kosh, has set up several self-help groups through 1,300 NGOS in which a total of 7.5 lakh women have benefited. It provides micro-credit to women who may not be well-off for undertaking income generation activities. |
Camp for medical officers on sexual health care
Dehradun, June 25 “To promote adolescent health care, a training camp is on for the medical officers of eight blocks of four districts of the state. These districts are Nainital, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Dehradun,” said Dr Rajeev Bijalwan programme coordinator, HIHT. At the end of the training, the eight resource persons will train adolescent peers in 800 villages for tackling adolescent-related problems. “A system will be created with the active involvement of medical officers and ANMS who would monitor health related issues of adolescents,” said Dr Vartika Saxena, assistant director, HIHT. She said that the health of adolescents is not getting the desired attention. It has been observed that 30 per cent of marriages in our society take place before the girl turns 18. “In such cases girls deliver babies early putting their own and their babies’ health to a great risk. With proper education such problems can be avoided,” said Dr Saxena. |
