Now, report cards for doctors
Chandigarh, May 30 In addition, the department is providing them an opportunity to voice their concerns in their respective fields through a forum while best performing doctors are getting an opportunity to showcase their expertise by way of presentations at this same forum. The result of the carrot and stick policy being followed by the department is for all to see. In Panchkula alone, the OPD has shot up from 22,000 to 32,000 while bed occupancy has risen to 130 per cent in April alone. In Gurgaon, the number of patients has gone up from 8,980 in the period from January to April last year to 16,011 within the same period this year. Similarly, major surgeries are up by 170 per cent and minor by 154 per cent. Principal secretary, health, Anuradha Gupta, said: “We have given all that the doctors asked for right from increasing their salaries to tackling the shortage of staff and equipment. We also introduced free of cost medicines for the patients. Now, accountability is the bottom line. We will judge them on the basis of patients they attend to in OPDs, surgeries and other benchmarks that we have set.” The effort of the department is to turn its district hospitals into patient-friendly multi-speciality centres. A large number of anaesthetists, eye-surgeons, gynaecologists, general surgeons, and orthopaedicians have been posted to these hospitals to broaden the range of treatment available. The department has also prescribed speciality-wise minimum treatment protocols which have to be made available so that the patients are not referred to private hospitals that charge exorbitantly. “We provide free of cost caesareans and eye operations which cost Rs 15,000 and above in the private sector. So, when we have the expertise and the equipment, there is no reason the patients should not come to us which is why a protocol has been set,” added Gupta. However, keeping in mind the convenience of doctors, the department has introduced periodic meetings at the headquarters, which will serve as a forum for healthy exchange of ideas and helps the specialists spell out the constraints that bind them. |
