Jalandhar, May 9
With the poll fever catching up, voting-awareness teams too have been carrying out aggressive campaigns. The purpose, of course, is not to promote any candidate or a political party but to motivate the voters to become aware of their rights to exercise their franchise.

While the ‘Jago voter jago’ and ‘Pappu matt bano’ advertisements do the rounds of the TV channels, a group of local NGOs too have been carrying out a similar job in their own way - distributing pamphlets, putting up hoardings, sending SMSs and spreading word by conducting meetings with voters.

A city-based organisation, Consumer and Human Rights Protection Samiti, too, has launched an electoral awareness movement. The campaign is being led by Mukesh Verma, who runs a sanitary shop here and has been engaged in consumer rights awareness for some time.

He said he had formed a 51-member body that was moving from area to area, especially targeting the illiterate and the poor, who could be an easy target by a candidate in exchange of money and liquor.

He said the voters were being urged to use their right to vote to see the candidate of their choice coming to power. “We have been suggesting that they should not get carried away by the religion, caste or sect of the candidate and should rather weigh him on his moral conduct”, he added.

Members of the Human Empowerment League of Punjab, an NGO based at Nawanshahr, too has been mobilising the electorate on making an intelligent choice. One of the chain messages sent across by a member reads, “Your vote is very precious. Vote only if you are 100 per cent sure about the candidate, else use the power of not to cast your vote. Ask the presiding officer for 17 (A) register and ‘refuse to vote’ under section 49 (o).”

Parvinder Singh Kittna of the NGO said he had often come across people saying that they were not in favour of voting since they did not find any of the candidates appealing. “Such people often keep sitting at home. By going to the polling station and filling up the option to refuse to vote, such people can at least send the message across to political parties on being wise enough in selecting their nominees”, he pointed out.

Another Nawanshahr-based NGO, Upkar, has been advocating that the people should vote for the candidate who commits to work for social causes like drug de-addiction and female feoticide.

Badal makes real devp claims
Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, May 9
Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal appealed to the electorate to vote in favour of BJP-SAD alliance candidates for real development in Punjab.

He was addressing a big election rally in favour of SAD-BJP candidate Som Parkash from Hoshiarpur (reserved) Lok Sabha constituency at Tanda, 32 km from here today.

The star campaigner of the BJP, Arun Jaitley, who was accompanying Badal, criticised the UPA government and alleged that it had failed on all fronts.

It had done nothing to control the ongoing increase in skyrocketing prices of the essential commodities.

The Nanawati Commission, which was constituted by the BJP-led NDA government to probe into 1984 riots, had held Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar responsible for the massacre of innocent Sikhs. But the CBI influenced by the Congress leaders had given a clean chit to both of them.

Majority of UPA’s constituents had already left the Congress and many of their leaders had been dreaming to become a prime minister.

Bhogpur, May 9
The rural unit of the District Youth Congress staged a youth chetna rally to urge the youngsters to propagate the policies and programmes of the Congress, besides ensuring maximum votes for the party nominees. Hundreds of youngsters from all over the district took part in the event which was presided over by DYC Chief Vikramjit Singh Chaudhry.

He said the need of the hour was for every worker to ensure that Jalandhar recorded the maximum voter turnout in favour of the party candidate. Since only a few days were left before polling, they should fan out into the field and convince the voters that the interests of the country were best served under the UPA regime.

In the PM, we have the best and strongest leader, especially when the world is facing a major recession. It was due to the strong fiscal policies in place that India could emerge unscathed in the meltdown, he added. Varinder Rathor, IYC general secretary, and in charge Punjab, said it was a matter of pride for all that AICC general secretary had chosen Punjab for the pilot project in which all the leaders were elected. Not only this, he also ensured that three youth Congress leaders were given MP tickets in Punjab. He pointed out that this was just the beginning and more tickets would be given to deserving YC workers and leaders in the assembly elections as was done in Orissa and Madhya Pradesh.

Rathore also praised Vikram for organising the first ever youth rally in Punjab. This would send a strong signal to the youth who would rally behind such leaders in the coming days, he added.

Among others, Jalandhar nominee Mohinder Singh Kaypee, former Ministrer and Chairman of the Jalandhar Campaign Committee Santokh Singh Chaudhry, Nakodar legislator Amarjit Singh Samra and nine block presidents were present.
